Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara Review

Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara

A few weeks ago I did a Beauty Throwback post on a really old favourite Maybelline mascara, and as I was buying that I spotted a Maybelline offer that was too good to refuse (3 for 2) and I wanted the mascara and the concealer, and I couldn’t find a third item. I took a second look at the mascaras and then spotted a twist on another old favourite, Lash Sensational, and I was intrigued as I’d not really heard anything about the Luscious version.

The tube shape is identical to its older sister, but with a Matte Black packaging and baby pink chrome lettering it’s like the packaging in reverse. But that’s virtually where the similarities stop between these two. Once I cracked open this tube I was expecting to find the same wand with a slightly different formula, the Lash Sensational Luscious mascara sounded like it was going to be a twist on an old favourite with added nourishing oils. But once I saw the wand I realised the packaging was pretty much all that they had in common and this mascara didn’t really feel like an extension of the same line, in the same way that the vast array of Colossal mascaras do.

Wand wise I’m usually always able to compare it to something else, but this brush is actually pretty unique – initially I was thinking it was similar to Benefit They’re Real, but on reflection they’re not too similar at all. It’s a rubber one with a slight taper which narrows towards the tip. The rows of bristles form in a slight cross shape which creates a self confessed reservoir of product on the brush which I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with.

The mascara describes itself as Richest Black which I do have to agree with, it’s super dark and doesn’t give even the slightest glimpse of a charcoal hue. I’d go as far as saying it’s maybe one of the blackest mascaras I’ve tried. The texture of this mascara is pretty odd and it almost has a sticky type residue. That sticky residue ends up playing in the mascaras favour as well against it.

The reason I have a love hate relationship with the wand is that it does work, it lifts the lash well and creates a bit of a curl, but the reservoir has a tendancy to pick up a bit too much product and it can make it quite wet feeling, that slight stickiness means you really have to comb through the lashes to be able to build length and volume without it all just turning into large clumps of lashes.

But the effort pays off and creates a very long black lash which doesn’t look spidery, but full and dramatic. There is still a little bit of clumping which as the mascara is ageing is almost becoming unavoidable as it’s only becoming a thicker formula that you keep having to comb through over and over.

The biggest problem for me though has been the transfer and smudging. When I reviewed the other Maybelline mascara I hinted that I really liked this mascara, which at the start I did – but as the weeks have rolled by I’m becoming more and more annoyed with using it. The length this gives my lashes is, well… amazing – but there’s something about this formula which just transfers so slightly and I find my lashes end up scraping my brow bone and over the past few weeks whilst it’s been so warm I’ve found that it’s left smudges behind and they’re almost impossible to shift.

The impossibility of removal only continues to when you actually fully want to get this off your lashes. No micellar water, cleanser, oil or makeup cloth has ever managed to shift this, the only thing that seems to help is heat in the shower – which even still leaves panda eyes behind which eventually does shift with some encouragement from micellar water. It’s funny I thought the inclusion of oil into this mascara would only aid it’s removal – a bit like a cleansing oil that would melt down but the fact it has the exact opposite effect is awful.

After almost a month of using this solidly, I can’t tell what the oil element is doing for my lashes. It promises a softer feeling lash, but the fact that this is almost always leaving some residue behind and is such a pain is quite ironic, I feel like I haven’t seen my natural lash in so long! For me, I think personally I liked the original better, it was a damn sight easier to remove, the brush was just as easy to use and pick up product with. Not only that but this version comes at a premium and is £2 more expensive than the standard Lash Sensational.

Sorry to hear this didn’t live up to the original Lash Sensational. Mascaras are tricky because of their formulas and they can change drastically when they dry out, certain mascaras work better dry and certain mascaras are better when they are first opened. I like length and volume otherwise my lashes look limp and thin. The black packaging is nice but would be difficult to find in a makeup bag or handbag xx

I am sorry to hear that the mascara didn’t live up to your expectations but I think that it looks pretty good. I only wish that I could do my eyeshadow and eyeliner as pretty as yours!

I actually love this mascara! I have used both Lash Sensational Mascaras and I think the original helps a lot with length while the luscious focuses on volume. But I agree it can definitely leave clumps if your not careful! Great review!

It’s a shame this doesn’t live up to the original, as I love that one! This sounds good in the sense that it is super black, but I have a problem with mascara transferring at the best of times… Lash Sensational original is one of the only ones that doesn’t! So I think I’ll stick to that xxx
