Maybelline Dr Rescue Gel Effect Top Coat Review

After discovering that the last topcoat left in my collection had gone gloopy and thick, and no Seche Vite anywhere local on hand. I was absolutely desperate in the supermarket for a topcoat.  I thought, I’ll pick something cheap – order some Seche online, and this will tie my over until then.

Maybelline’s Dr Rescue Topcoat was just about the cheapest topcoat that I could find that wasn’t made by the Supermarket. What makes it Rescue? Well I had the same question, I’d normally think that there would be info on the label to explain such a name but no, and the website doesn’t give much of a reason either.

Unusually the colour of this is quite a bright, although see-through pink polish. I did wonder as to whether this would leave any kind of tinge to very pale polishes – but after testing it over white I discovered it didn’t.

In Boots this is £2.99 for 7ml – compared to Seche which you can pick up for around £6-7 online/£9 in boots for a 14ml bottle – so whilst Seche Vite is a little more expensive. I know this is a bold claim, but do I dare say that I prefer this?!

Hear me out on this one – The bottle is smaller, it’s less likely to go gloopy and thick, the brush reaches further down so I will have less waste at the bottom of the bottle which the brush just won’t reach to. The brush is slightly wider and makes for a quicker application.

A lot of the performance qualities of this remind me very much of Seche, it adds shine and makes polish last days longer than it did without (I spoke about this topcoat without naming it in my A England Captive Goddess Review which at first was chipping in under 24 hours, when with this it lasted 6 full days).  It’s not quite as thick, but I think you get the same glossy gel look as Seche Vite. It dries even faster than Seche, and is just an all round good egg of a polish.

There’s also a base coat within this range which I’m going to try when I’ve ran out of the Essie one I’m currently using. I’ve had the topcoat for probably 5/6 weeks now, and have held off reviewing it because each time it’s surprised me and hasn’t failed me, I’ve kept thinking it will fail and disappoint me at some point but hasn’t. I’m now almost at the end of my bottle, and I went to purchase a backup, but there was none left on the shelves! I’m going on a massive mission to hunt one down this weekend, as I now don’t think I can be without it!

I’ve never purchased any other Maybelline polishes before, although I think I do have 1 from a beauty box. I’m going to have to try some out from their line as this has me seriously impressed.

What is your favourite topcoat?

I’m definitely going to pick this up, it sounds great! I recently picked up one of their color show polishes and I’m so impressed, I’ve had it on for almost a week now and it hasn’t chipped at all xxx

Really can’t fault it at all, I’ve been to 3 boots and a superdrug over the past few days and none had it in stock – I’m keeping my eyes peeled for it, but have just had to buy something different until I can get my hands on it as I only have 1 use left! xx

Damn try Asda or Tesco they tend to stock Maybelline and I find they are more likely to have items in stock for those ‘must have’ items 😉 fingers crossed you get your hands on it again soon xx

Ooh, that sounds impressive! I’ll have to check it out. Glad I read your review. I’d have been quite put off by that pink tint!

I’m a dedicated Seche fan but maybe I’ll have to give this a go now!
    Great post 😊 x

I definitely need to try this if it rivals seche vite especially at that price! Fab review 🙂 xo

    • I terms of cost per ml they don’t work out that different as the bottle size is able half the size, but as seche can have a tendency to go a bit gloopy in that bottom third where as the dr rescue didn’t for me, worth trying regardless though as its a really nice product!

Ah yeah fair point, I always have to tip the seche bottle on its side as it’s hard to get the last bit out and like you said it goes a bit funky! Yeah I definitely will give it a go! 🙂
