A bit of a dramatic title I’m sure you will agree, but this post is a bit of a skincare update for you on my current skin problems and the routine I’m doing. Since getting married I’ve had problems and I think I’ve finally got them under control.
At the start of the year my old Magnitone cleanser was out of my routine, and I noticed a slow decline in my skin over the months that went by. I was kindly sent a new one as part of becoming an Ambassador for them, and it wasn’t until one was introduced back into my routine that I noticed just how much of a difference it must have been making to keeping my skin clear. After years of use I no longer appreciated what it was doing for me and it was more routine and enjoyment than me appreciating it was helping keep my skin mostly clear.
But the new spots I’d been gaining started dying down – I was getting them back on my chin, forehead and cheeks, places I’d not had spots in a good year or two freqently but new ones seemed to be popping up every few days. After a couple of weeks of using this 5-6 days a week (I always give my skin a day or two break) everything was back to normal except my left cheek. The biggest point of me noticing that there was a difference was around my period, hormonal breakouts were something I was suffering with monthly (or now as I’m getting the damn things every three weeks since coming off the pill, thanks body!), I wasn’t even getting them at that time of the month either.
The Husband Allergy Debate
I spent weeks wondering what was different about my left cheek that compared to my right. Large painful spots were appearing that were so deep under the skin with so much pressure I found they were giving me headaches if I didn’t pop them (gross I know). I was getting 2-3 at a time on my cheek, by the time one would heal the next would be brewing – as they healed looking very dry, flaky and red and in general my makeup wasn’t applying fantastic on top of it, even my Dad picked up on my skin ‘looking like a spotty teenager’s’… thanks Dad.
In bed I often sleep under Ben’s arm under his shoulder and it wasn’t until I joked with a friend about the situation that oh maybe it’s him, that it dawned on me that was the only thing that was different that I always sleep on him on that side. So I declared to Ben I’m not going to sleep on you for a couple of weeks and see what happens… and I’ve not had a single one come up my left cheek since. The weird thing is that this never happened pre-wedding, for years we’ve slept in this way (I’m a cold person and he’s warm, so is a free hot water bottle) so there’s a genuine debate to be had as to whether I’m allergic to having a husband – as I’ve purposefully not tried anything new and just stuck to what I was using to just isolate him as the cause and that does seem to be the case.
I’m going to give it another week or two and go back to seeing what happens if I sleep on his shoulder again, then maybe we’ll try different shower gels etc and see if it’s maybe something he’s using that’s causing persistent breakouts.
For now I’m trying to keep my skincare routine simple, in the morning I wash my face with a gentle cleanser, apply use a micellar pad and make sure my face is completely clear before applying a light moisturiser, in the evening I take off my makeup with either a cleanser or micellar water, depending on how heavy my makeup is, and use my Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleanser with my Magntione, before applying a moisturiser or serum. I’m planning, once I get to the bottom of what is definitely causing my breakouts on my cheek on starting with new products again, but so far I’ve really been sticking to those I featured in my Back to Basics skincare post a few months back, skincare posts are at a shortage at the moment and I’m only just starting to trust myself in trying new things.
I know it sounds a little bit crazy, I’m fully aware that I’ve had some funny looks from people when I’ve said that I’ve been testing this theory, but I wish I had pictures of what my skin looked like over the past 3 and a bit months to how it does now, almost two weeks on from testing this theory!
I’m curious as to whether anyone else has had anything strange like this before?
