Over the past few years, it’s felt like there’s been one product in the lip balm game that’s dominated, and that’s the Laneige Sleeping Masks. I’ll admit that I’ve been a little curious about them thinking one day, I’ll eventually pick one up and then when browsing as I do to look for any good value sets ahead of Christmas I spotted this Midnight Minis set, featuring five different flavours and I decided to snap it up, so I could finally answer for myself, If the Laniege Sleeping Masks are worth the hype?
I’ve had this set for around a month or so now. and it’s been the lip balm that I’ve pretty much exclusively gone too all month long. Whilst I intend to more review the formula of these than the set in this review, I had to mention that I think this is a fab way to try different brands and they’re nice dinky sizes in lightweight plastic packaging that means even the loyalist of Laniege Sleeping Mask fans may enjoy this for stowing away in their handbag. The five masks in this set are Mango, Vanilla, Gummy Bear, Berry and Sweet Candy. These were 3g pots each, and the set cost £17.50. One full size is 20g and costs £19.50 – so the full size is better value unless you want to try a bunch of flavours.

Laniege Sleeping Mask Flavours
When I opened the box a month or so ago, I quite literally just plucked the one at the top, not feeling a particular preference for any of the different flavours. Or, so I thought… as it turns out, surprisingly these aren’t flavoured at all, just scented! Which took me a little by surprise as I’d always always assumed that these had a taste to them. Personally I think that is probably a good thing, the better they taste the more likely I would personally be to lick them on my lips and they have just the right hint of a waxy taste to deter me from doing so.
The scents seem to only linger for the duration that you are applying and then don’t seem to be noticeable beyond that.
Laniege Sleeping Mask Formula
Whilst these are called a Sleeping Mask, I’ve pretty much used these as my go-to lip balm day and night. It’s not the best formula for being on-the-go, I prefer anything in a tube or a stick format for not having sticky fingers, and I found this particularly the case whilst out in Iceland and taking my gloves off regularly to protect my lips which were getting battered by the wind.
However, that being said the formula is fab. The Laniege Sleep Masks apply soft and smooth to the lips, and instantly provide relief to lips when they are feeling dry and give the lips a nice, healthy sheen. The ingredients feature vitamin C, pomegranate, grapefruit and raspberry with coconut oil which helps with hydration alongside hyaluronic acid.
Whilst I have used these day and night, the formula of these is more mask like, and they wouldn’t be a formula that I would recommend to use under makeup as the formula is just too emollient. But it is a mask after all.
How Long do Laniege Sleeping Mask Last?
Application wise, I find it really depends, they’re a pretty slippery formula, so if I apply them in the day and I am eating (or more likely now it’s winter, drinking copious cups of tea), I find I tend to need to apply fairly frequently. But at nighttime, I find if I shut up and go to sleep and don’t try and talk to my partner for an hour (not sorry), then the formula seems to last really well and keep me hydrated until morning.
In terms of the pot, I am really surprised how long a 3g of this lasts, I have been using this a minimum of 4 times a day for a month, I’ve mostly used the same pot every time and it’s still not empty. Scraping a little onto my finger and applying goes a long way and I’d say I’ve got maybe a solid weeks worth still left in there before I’ll be popping open my next one.

So Are Laniege Sleeping Masks Worth The Hype?
I can see why people like the Laniege Masks, but honestly – they’re a nice formula, but nothing for me that is groundbreaking, and whilst I am enjoying using them, I am just not fully convinced. I’d be interesting in picking up one of their tube balms for keeping in my handbag to be a bit more practical. I like the formula and found them very conditioning on the lips, and the perfect time to try them for me was at this time of year, as that shift from autumn to winter is when my lips suffer the most, and this little set has certainly kept any crispy and flakiness away.
However, if I am being honest… I think formula wise I do prefer the Nuxe Reve de Miel lip balm for a similar overnight mask, which has been a regular repurchase for years, particularly when my lips have been terrorised by weather. I am not sure whether these would cut it just in the same way as the Nuxe does for me.
One thing I don’t understand is why people seem to find them collectable. Whilst the scents are (mostly) appealing but fade quite quickly, they apply the same on the lips, don’t have a tint and don’t have a flavour, so other than them being cute to look at there’s not much other than colour of packaging differentiating them.
Have you tried the Laniege Lip Masks, and do you think they are worth the hype?
