Coastal Scents Fall Festival Eyeshadow Palette

The Fall Festival Eyeshadow Palette

I was really excited when this palette arrived in my Look Incredible box in September, Coastal Scents is a brand that I’ve heard good things about but not tried anything from, when I saw the colours in this palette it had me even more excited as the colour selection was completely up my alley – so meet the Coastal Scents Fall Festival Eyeshadow Palette.

The palette comes in an outer cardboard sleeve which isn’t the most swishly designed, in fact there’s no way a graphic designer was involved in designing this packaging. Luckily, when opened things get a lot better, the inner packaging is like MAC’s Old Style large custom palettes, featuring a mirror nested in the lid. It’s a nice size palette in slick size packaging, in addition to this one nice touch about this palette is that the pans are magnetised and lift out of the packaging, which means you can lift these out and mix and match with other individual pans, a nifty little feature for low cost brand and palette. The good news about this palette is whilst it is now discontinued, all of these shades are available as singles so you can still get them.

The Coastal Scents Fall Festival Eyeshadow Palette has a mixture of finishes, but not a lot of mixture, there’s one satin shade, one matte and the rest are shimmers – Coastal Scents say there’s metallics in this palette, but for me none of these are shiny enough to be metallic. On looking at the palette I wasn’t first struck about the organisation of the shades until I actually swatched them, the first row are lighter neutrals, the middle row are the brights, whilst the bottom row are the darker neutrals.

Coastal Scents Fall Festival Eyeshadow Palette Swatches

Row One

Chamois Nude – This looks matte from the swatch but as you move you can see a satin sheen to the polish. On the eye this pays off a lot more yellow toned than how it looks on the arm

Bright Copper – Matches it’s name well, bright copper is an apt name for this shimmery shade.

Dark Golden Olive – A pretty shade it pays off a lot browner than it does in the pan.

Light Apricot – This is the closest shade to being a metallic in my opinion in terms of it’s effect but still verges closer to a shimmer in my opinion. Pretty on the inner corner but doesn’t have the best pigmentation out of the palette.

Row Two

Kiwi Green – This is a really rich apple green, or kiwi green, but it doesn’t lean towards olive at all. Shimmer finish with a very soft gold sheen

Deep Cataloupe – Bright Golden Yellow with yellow shimmer

Regalia Purple – I’d say this leans more towards a blue or a violet than a purple.

American Rose – Bright Cherry Pink satin with a subtle shimmer running through, not the best pigmentation

Row Three

Cherry Chocolate – This is a shimmer, but it looks much more subtle next to the rest, when you start to blend it you start to see it’s sheen more, I wish this was a matte as I’d get a lot more use out of it!

Raisin Berry – Probably my favourite shade in the palette, a cranberry with an underlying brown undertone. Very warm, totally lovely.

New Penny – A brown toned copper, gives me Urban Decay Smog vibes but slightly warmer toned.

Gunmetal – I’d say this is off black rather than gunmetal, on the eye it certainly looks black rather than grey. This is a matte finish.

The swatches from this palette bode really well for my expectations of how it was going to wear, all of these swatches above with the exception of American Rose and Gunmetal are just one swatch across (those were two). But I have a couple of problems with this palette, the first two being the transition colour, it’s too yellow and it has a tendency, the second is that I wish the dark matte was a brown rather than a black, I don’t wear blacks very often and the majority of these shades would work better with brown rather than black in my opinion.

My last and major problem is that these don’t blend well at all with a brush, all of these tend to skip on the eye a bit, even the light transition shade looks quite patchy when applied through the crease as a starting point. The colours and metallics also have the same issue, they’re more passable as if I pack them on more intensely on the eye then it works, but in terms of creating a lovely blended gradient I find it near on impossible. The worst of the bunch is the black, it’s a very stiff formula and as you blend it becomes incredibly patchy you have to keep layering it on and on and the overall finished look is far from my favourite overall it takes too much effort for me to use it, and because I don’t like the black and the transition shade it’s not a palette which is a standalone one for me.

Application

I used Chamois Nude through the crease with Light Apricot in the inner corner, American Rose through the centre of the lid and Gunmetal on the outer corner. I had to blend some more Chamois Nude above the socket to lighten up the other shades through the crease.

What I’m planning on doing is lifting out a couple of the shades that are standouts for me and placing them in my large Z-Palette alongside Makeup Geek shades and see if I reach for them more often, if not I think I’ll end up decluttering from my collection and see if one of my friends gets on with it any better than I have done. When this was sold it was $15, so just over $1 a shade which isn’t bad at all – however with budget brands such as Makeup Revolution setting the bar so high for budget eyeshadows it still ended up as a disappointment for me.

Have you tried any hits from Coastal Scents I should consider checking out?

The shades look so nice inside the palette! I agree with you, Raisin Berry looks stunning and seems like a real highlight from the palette. How does it perform on the eye, have you tried it?

It’s moderately better than the other coloured shades but still has issues with blending out to a soft transition as you’d expect!

Isn’t this a Coastal Scents palette? This is the only thing I’ve tried by them. I have a couple of palettes from BH Cosmetics though I think they’re both the private label type companies but I could be wrong!

I only noticed because I got this palette in my Look Incredible box too and I know I’ve never tried anything by Coastal Scents! I should really have another play with this palette- I think it’s already been moved to the side of my drawer that I never reach for! x

I think you meant Coastal Scents a few times there, and honestly I don’t blame you for mixing the two up I always do too haha. I’m really not a fan of coastal scents. The quality just isn’t there. Bh cosmetics on the other hand have some amazing palettes, like the Shaaanxo and Carli Bybel ones! Loved reading this x

I did you’ve caught me mid-editing, I don’t know why I thought it was BH Cosmetics but I’m swapping it all back to the CS now!
I’ll have to buy something from BH Cosmetics to make up for me blaming them with poor performance!

I know, I wanted to love it but there’s things I find a lot easier to work with and get the soft edge I want, these are too harsh and hard work for me!

I wanted to get this palette but it’s been sold out and I didn’t know it was being discontinued. Sometimes these single shadows go on sale for super cheap, you could try switching out a couple of different shades that way. Xx

We can’t get Coastal Scents very easily here, unless I was placing a huge order from them online it probably wouldn’t be worth me ordering a couple of singles as I’d be spending more on postage! I think I will pop my favourites into another palette though!
