Just like a week ago I said I was flirting with different blushes, I’m definitely becoming a bit of a serial cheater when it comes to mascaras at the moment. I have way, way too many on the go – but there’s one in particular which seems to have floated to the bottom of the pile since my obsession with L’Oreal Paradise Extatic began and I decided it was finally time to get around to reviewing the Clinique Chubby Lash Mascara.
I did a post a little while a go when I did a Clinique Haul when I was able to pick up a bunch of minis for free, and this was one of my choices. The Chubby range from Clinique is incredibly popular, but I’ve not tried anything from the line – in fact most of Clinique is a bit of a mystery to me. I’ve heard lots of hit, and lots of miss reviews on this mascara, so I was intrigued to try it for myself, and I can see why it might be a marmite product.
The packaging of this is quite fat, and chunky, I’d be put off buying the full size for my makeup bag because it’s so chunky and oversized! The brush on this is a rubber wand, which traditionally isn’t my first choice, but it’s straight shaped and packed with lots of triangular shaped bristles. The brush isn’t as fat as you’d expect given how fat the tube is, but equally I think this is a mascara for people who have naturally quite long lashes as it can be quite difficult to manoeuvre.
The name ‘Chubby’ to me suggests that it’s going to add weight to my lashes and amp them up with volume, it even describes itself as a fattening mascara. But in fact in terms of performance it’s quite the opposite, it adds length and separates and creates quite a wispy look to the lashes, but signs of volumising are are as existent as the Dodo. As someone with long lashes, the thing I want to see from a mascara is volume first, then length, then separation – and this mascara delivers back to front in terms of my desired qualities. I feel like the brush doesn’t pick up enough product to create anything dramatic and even with layering it adds little volume.
Which leaves me wondering who this mascara is for, the brush is that little bit too big that I imagine people with shorter lashes will struggle to run this through, and people with longer lashes often want more than length from a mascara. If soft and subtle is your thing with already long lashes then maybe this is for you, but I can’t help but feel like that for the price (£18 for a full size) you could easily find something way cheaper that does the same.
The good points about the Clinique Chubby Lash Mascara is that it doesn’t flake, budge or smudge at all through the day and I’ve even found over the weekend that it held up pretty well in the drizzle haze we walked through on a moor, with no scary black streaks on my face when we got back to the car, so it’s a water resistant formula that isn’t hard to remove.
Whilst the Clinique Chubby Lash Mascara isn’t quite empty it’s heading to my empties pile now, I’m not enjoying the look it’s created on the lashes and after a good few weeks of use it’s not performing as I would expect and I have a huge pile of mascaras that I’m sure can wow me more than this one has! Find it on the Boots’ website here if you’d like to give it a try.
