Simple Micellar Water Review

You don’t need to have read more than two of my empties posts to see that the Garner Micellar water has been a long time favourite in my routine, a permanent go-to, always need to have one in my drawer. It even featured in my recent Back To Basics Skincare routine (which I think in hindsight I should have titled Holy Grail Skincare, as it really was the best of the best for me).

I recently discovered I had finished my last full size bottle, I had a mini travel bottle awaiting for our honeymoon, which I didn’t want to crack open in lieu of a full size and end up needing to purchase an overpriced travel version. I decided it was about time I tried an alternative that lots of people love over the Garnier Micellar Waters, so picked up a bottle of Simple’s Micellar Water instead.

Simple is a brand I don’t really gravitate towards, but then again I don’t actually buy a lot of basic skincare – beauty boxes keep me topped up of a lot of stuff, so essentially I only go out of my way to keep me topped up on things like Micellar Water which I run through quicker than what beauty boxes keep my stash perpetually full with.

I had really high hopes for this Micellar Water, I know a lot of people absolutely love it – I’ve wanted to try it but have always been a bit dubious to try something new as most Micellar Water’s I find a little iffy, so stepping away from one which I know works incredibly well for me seemed a bit worrying. Whilst I don’t think this is the worst thing I’ve ever used, over the past two weeks of me trying it out, I’ve realised that this won’t be replacing my trusty Garnier.

The first thing I noticed with this is I have to rub the cotton pad a lot harder against my face. I’m using the same cotton pads which are the best cotton pads ever (Sainsbury’s Boutique for reference), which with Garnier’s I can lightly glide all over my face with one side, then lids with the other, and that’s it. I’m done and good to go. With this I have to press a lot harder to get makeup off my face, and I need to use a lot more cotton pads to get everything off. I don’t feel clean after one cotton pads worth of fluid like I normally  would, and a second reveals that there is usually still a lot of makeup residing on my face.

Secondly, I’ve noticed around the eye area only, this stings. Not as much as some I’ve had in the past, such as the Elemis Smart Micellar Water, which was amazing on the face, but made my eyeballs feel like they were melting. But it’s just enough for it to be noticeable and irritating, looking at the ingredients, I’m not sure which is the responsible ingredient, but it’s worth noting that the Simple Ingredient list is a lot less simple than Garnier’s – I’m guessing it’s one of the Chloride’s irritating.

Garnier Micellar Water (Pink Topped) Aqua / Water, Hexylene Glycol, Glycerin, Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate, Disodium Edta, Poloxamer 184, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide Fil B162919/3

Simple Micellar Water Aqua, Hexylene Glycol, Glycerin, Niacinamide, Panthenol, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Butylene Glycol, Pantolactone, Cetrimonium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Chloride, DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate

Price wise, it’s also a little more expensive, I couldn’t find this in Superdrug, Wilkos, Boots or Sainsbury’s on offer the day I bought it, so it cost £4.40 from Wilkos for a 200ml bottle. Put that into perspective Garnier’s are £4.99 at full price for 400ml of product, and they’re usually on offer for £3, or buy one get one half price. Going on the rate I usually use Micellar Water which is about a 400ml bottle every 8 weeks, I’d be running through one of these every 3, given I need to use more product each time! Now I will say I use Micellar Water as well, every time I photograph products to make sure any finger prints or foundation drips are eradicated from the bottle – hence going through it a bit quicker than average, but I’m not sure I’d be keen even with not using it for that purpose.

I’ll use this up, but it’s not going to be taking the top spot from Garnier for me.

What are your favourite micellar waters?

Definitely gonna try this one out. So many beauty bloggers rave about the simple micellar wipes too.

I love Garnier Micellar Waters. I am not sure I’d pick this one up. 🙁

Thank you for this! I almost went with a simple one recently as it was on sale….. I scraped that thought though and went with my usual Garnier. I used to use simple when I was younger but I just don’t like it anymore. Maybe my skin has changed…. The sting around the eye you mention is a normal thought for me when I think of Simple!! Xx

Great review, I love my Garnier Micellar Water, currently trying out the different types they have, don’t think I could ever change 🙂

I am currently using the Garnier micellar water and I finished many bottles of it. On Saturday I went shopping and I found this and I wanted to purchase it but I didn’t. I will try it to see how I like it since everyone recommended this to me, but so far I find Garnier to be the best I tried xx

Like the Garnier ones a lot. I’ve tried the pink & blue cap ones. I also love the one from Bioderma that’s for oily/combo skin.

I agree wholeheartedly with your review. It’s not bad it’s just not as good!

Got to be Garnier! I haven’t tried any others yet – as much as I like to experiment, this is one area where I take the approach ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. H x

I tried this a couple of years ago and didn’t care for it – I found it left a soapy residue on my skin. I know, a lot of people like this but it just wasn’t for me either!
My favourite micellar waters are the Yves Rocher 3 Teas (now discontinued 😥 ), Reversa, Sukin, Caudalie… and the Garnier one! 😀

I haven’t used the garnier one as years ago I used one of their night creams which was quite perfumed a brought me up in a rash, since then I’ve always been a bit weary. I’m currently using the Nivea micellar water which I find very good 😊
