Laura Geller Baked Gelato Highlighter – Gilded Honey

Laura Geller Gilded Honey highlighter

Hello! I’m back from an unitended hiatus – I’ve had such a busy few weeks and whilst I’m not quite as organised as I will normally be it’s been good to let off some pressure of keeping up with blogging on top of a hella-lot of work stress/house stress and just being  a general social butterfly! I’ve mentioned this highlight in passing a few times over the last few months and I thought it was finally time I got around to posting a full review on these as any day now it’s going to end up in my empties pile. When these highlights from Laura Geller launched around 2 years ago they were big news – everyone was talking about them – and since they seem to have been a product which has been forgotten by the top influencers.

I had my eye on them for ages an whenever I went to a counter where they had Laura Geller I tried to check out their colour selections to see which might have been the best fit for me – and there was either a lack of/missing samples to swatch or any shades I was drawn to were out of stock. The shade I was drawn to most often was Gilded Honey. When it came to Christmas time Beauty Bay did a particular deal which featured a ‘look in a makeup bag’ and one of the things which drew me in was the ability to finally try this highlight – in the shade I wanted, for much cheaper than it would have been to buy it.

The highlight was the only thing included in the makeup bag which wasn’t full size, but it was a generous deluxe size and I’ve had it on the go since Christmas as my go to for most days and it’s almost empty now… so it’s had a really good try and I’ve managed to collect up all of my thoughts.

So first, we can’t not talk about packaging of this can we? The pan of this is absolutely beautiful – the product is a baked highlight and features a swirly design to mimic the view of a whipped gelato from above. This deluxe sized product took the main outer packaging of the full size down to micro form – an the plastic casing is a shrunken version of it’s bigger sister, which is one thing which does let this product down slightly. These aren’t cheap highlighter and whilst the packaging is better made than what I’m about to mention, they’re very similar to to highlight packaging to those that Makeup Revolution has. But for £16.50 it doesn’t quite feel that the plastic packaging matches it’s price point.

This deluxe sample has lasted me around 6 months of daily use I would guess by the time it’s going to be finished (I’m getting close to it being done now!) and is roughly half the size of the original. So if you were going to use the full size highlight daily you’d get around a year out of it, which isn’t too bad. Also if you like highlighter and only have one highlighter in your collection, kudos, I don’t know how you’ve managed not to amass enough to be seen from space.

So onto the product itself…

The shade Gilded Honey is quite an unusual one depending on the light and how much you build it up depends on the tone that this takes on the skin. Looking at the pan you’d be fooled into thinking that this is really warm and golden and you have to build it to get to that kind of tone. But that’s the thing that I love about this shade as it can give you more than one look with one product.

With a light hand and one ‘coat’ of the powder on the cheekbones, nose tip and cupids bow gives this soft champagne tone to the skin that just creates a really dewy like glow to the skin – in a lot of lights it can look almost icy and it’s really only under sun that the warm pigment jumps out at you. If I want something more obviously always golden/obvious or intense (or all three) I tend to go in with a second layer on my cheekbones only (no one needs a golden nosed Rudolph or look like they have a golden moustache) to build up to the shade closer to how it looks in the pan.

It blends beautifully over unpowered foundation as well as when the face has been powdered too. This sample is a bit of a small finicky size and I find fan brushes too hard to get product onto – there’s a brush from Real Techniques called the ‘Contour brush’ which is a small domed brush which I can focus onto areas I want to highlight but also blur and blend out and I find that the two work perfectly hand in hand.

I don’t find that this powder has all day wear on me, but I don’t honestly think I’ve ever found a highlight that has managed to keep the same intensity through a whole day – it’s one thing I find wears quickest on the face. That being said it’s no worse than anything I would consider ‘standard’ and it’s fully noticeable for the first 5-6 hours before fading away softly around the 7-8 mark.

This highlight has been a real favourite over the past four months and I’ll be tempted to try another shade in the future, however for now I’m glad to be finished so I can move onto another to try and finish up. The thought of packing my makeup to move is horrid and any products I can clear out is going to be appreciated on moving day when my parents ask me if I ‘might have a bit too much makeup’.

Have you tried the Laura Gellar highlights? What are your favourites?

Gilded Honey looks beautiful, I imagine because of the fact you can go in with a light hand or more heavy handed it would suit more skin tones? Well done you for almost finishing it up! x

This looks great on you! I have been eyeballing these too, but thought Gilded Honey might be too dark for me and the pink a bit too pink. So I’m not sold on the shade selection just yet.

It looks like an amazing highlighter for different skin tones. I love the packaging a lot, it does look like a gelato! Great review xx

I am always drawn to this highlighter but I am not a huge fan of straight up gold highlighters. I saw they had a nice pink shade but I have yet to go test it in stores. I am also not completely sold on the expensive tagg. If I do swatch it and end up living it I might change my mind, but thank you for the read, very insightful!

This suits you a lot! I’m super fair and I have the shade Charming Pink – Absolutely love it!! One of my favourites as the texture is lovely – glides on so well and gives such a pretty sheen. Loved the post x

Such a lovely shade on you Rach! I’ve been wanting to try LG bits for a while but haven’t ever made the lurch as I know they have the higher price tag! I will keep my eyes peeled for a mini!! Xx
