Taking a look over my empties spreadsheet, my use up rate for products is staggeringly different to this time last year. Whilst my basket of finished off products hasn’t been as full as it usually has been – I still wanted to take the chance to do a pre-Christmas declutter of what had been building up in my bathroom cupboard.
Expectedly, a lot of what has been finished has been the basics – whilst I’ve been wearing makeup more regularly, sometimes I’ve found taking 15 minutes to pop a bit of eyeshadow on mentally prepares me for a day at the laptop – I’m often not using a lot of makeup I tend to run through more regularly such as base products. So it’s a “shower room” heavy edition.
Schwarzkopf Color Expert Omegaplex Dark Brown 4.0
I picked this up last year when I went short with my hair in September 2020, tempted by a change to the darkside it took me over a year to do it! If you don’t follow me on instagram you won’t have seen I’ve gone super dark, it’s the first time I’ve been this dark in about 7/8 years, Naturally my hair sits at about a level 5, but I’ve always preferred if I’m going brown to go one shade darker. This took really well to my hair and I only needed one box to cover my getting a bit-too-long locks. I’ve just done a touch up over the previous blonde ends with a 4.0 from another brand and the tone in this is much nicer than that one – will definitely be trying to get this one again in future but it seems a bit more difficult to find!
Tigi Catwalk Oatmeal and Honey Conditioner / Aussie Miracle Moist Shampoo
I’ve talked about both of these plenty of times before – my haircare dream team. I like the accompanying shampoo from the tigi range but not quite as much as the miracle moist shampoo and vice versa. Both do a great job of tackling dry ends whilst not overloading oily roots. I’ve been struggling to get my hands on the conditioner in b&M where you can normally pick up this giant bottle for £6.99 – but as soon as I see it again I will be buying a few to stock up!

Origins Retexturising Pink Clay Face Mask [Review – Gifted by M&S Beauty]
I feel kind of joyous that I’ve managed to finish this off, kind of sad – it’s been a brilliant mask that has always done a marvellous job. It’s the closest thing I’ve found to The Body Shop Blue Corn mask (which has been discontinued) which is my all time favourite face mask. It has a very fine grit to it, so once the clay mask has set and drawn out a lot of sebum in my skin – it exfoliates gently as it’s rinsed off leaving my skin soft and smooth. I’m guessing I got probably over 70 uses from this tube, Origins is at a medium price point, but they are worth every penny as the amount of uses you get from them is almost unbeatable!
Repurchase? No, as Origins aren’t cruelty free – I’ve bought an Elemis mask as a similar replacement!
Shills Pore Purifying Peel Off Black Mask [Review]
I know, 2 full size face masks in a month. This is the pore ripping face mask that did the rounds in the world of viral internet a few years ago and is my second tube of it. I picked up this tube at poundland and found it much less effective than the first one I had. I don’t know whether the formula is different at Poundland, or whether my skin has changed, but it didn’t seem to rip out hair or black heads in the same way it did before.
Repurchase? Probably not!
Simple Moisturising Facial Wash 50ml Pouch [Gifted by Superdrug]
I had this saved in my travel pile but when my cleanser stash was running low this got put into my shower. Firstly – great packaging for travel. It didn’t wow me a lot as a cleanser but it did a decent job of removing makeup and not leaving my skin feeling stripped – but for packing very light for a few nights away from home if I wanted to pack super light this would be ideal!
Formula Ultimate Sleep Cream [Review]
I’ve finished a fair few full sizes of these and decided to crack out a little mini I had waiting to try and give me a break from another moisuturiser I’m trying to finish. Bloody love this stuff. Great results for the price!
Repurchase? Already have one in my stash waiting!
Barbara Sturm Super Anti Aging Serum
This was a sample that came with my advent calendar, only got two uses out of it but I found it a little sticky alone – I had to layer moisturiser on top to seal it in. However it seemed to make my skin slightly irritated!
Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser
Another sample from the cupboard, this was a dual action exfoliator with chemical and physical exfoliating properties. I didn’t really notice effects from the AHA/BHA exfolaitors, but the scrubby particles did an okay job. it made my skin smooth but didn’t do a great job of my chin which is my problem are for clogged pores.
Hempz Lip Balm [Review – Gifted]
I made this my focus lip balm of choice to finish up and bloody loved it actually, when the season changed at the end of September , dry and crusty lips were creeping in and this did a great job of softening and smoothing out. I liked the smell of this, I can’t describe it, but it had only a slight taste (which I prefer, if it tastes too good I find myself licking it off!). Easy to put on on the go with the basic tube.
Repurchase? Yes maybe!
Baylis and Harding Gin and Tonic Hand Wash
This was a stocking filler I believe back in 2018 and it’s lasted ages by my kitchen sink. Sometimes I felt like it had no scent at all and other times I could really smell the tonic element to it. I liked the look of it and would consider buying it again as it’s pretty affordable!
Repurchase? Yes maybe!
M&S Body and Soul Body Wash
This was a pick up in the sale last Christmas on a whim and what a slog it was to finish – it basically had no scent at all, the description of peony and lily sounded lovely but it had virtually nothing of note to it. It did last a long time as the pump helped it last for ages, but the lack of enjoyment via scent was enough to put me off.
Dolly Wink Volume Mascara [Review]
I reviewed this back in September and I had to admit that it was empty after scraping the barrel for far too long. I really enjoyed this mascara and felt like it lived up to every claim that it made. Long wearing, waterproof, very black, volumising and holds a curl well. I opened this mid summer and it lasted me well through until end of October – admittedly I wasn’t using it every day but I was wearing it frequently enough to finish the whole thing without it drying out.
Repurchase? I would be tempted if I didn’t have a massive stash of mascaras to get through!
Rimmel Magnifieyes Eye Primer
I picked this up towards the tail end of last year, I was stood in Boots with a basket full of gifts for Christmas and really wanted to treat myself to the Fenty eye primer but wanted to cut the cost of my basket, a walk up and down the aisles trying to find a cheap option led to me throwing this in my basket instead. This was thoroughly average, maybe slightly below average. I didn’t find that it had a lot of grip to it, particularly for quite textured and glittery shadows.
Repurchase? Nope, wasn’t good enough for me and Rimmel isn’t CF!
Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream 30ml [Gifted – I think by M&S but I can not honestly remember!]
I don’t know why this ended up in the makeup photo! This was a clear up of hand cream from my cupboard – I do like this hand cream I find it very non-greasy as it sinks in so easily and is good for when I’m working and doing things with my hands – however it’s another non-CF brand, so won’t be purchased again.
Marvis Classic Strong Mint Toothpaste
I’ve mentioned this briefly in an empties before and I wanted to mention again for anyone looking for a cruelty free toothpaste – this one is great and I really like the flavour too. Can be found on the cheap in TK maxx if you search carefully, I normally stock up on a few tubes at a time when I see it!
Repurchase? Yes, already have another tube on the go.
Perfect Marc Jacobs – Sample
I really liked the bottle of this and was happy to receive a sample to try as I wanted to see if it bought the same blotchy allergies a lot of Marc Jacobs fragrances do. this one didn’t but it’s not on my wishlist, I found it a bit… boring?!
Diptique Eau de Minthe – Sample
Supposedly very minty, it just didn’t seem as minty as I was expecting it to be! Was okay, but more like chewing gum you’ve been chewing for 10 minutes rather than freshly popped in. Not sure who the target market is for this.
Joop Wow Women / Elizabeth Arden Meditteranean [Gifted Secret Scent Box]
These only had a couple of spritzes left in each of these so I used them up in a strange cocktail in one use. Not the best pairing, not the worst. These were both pretty generic but non offensive.
Logging in on my spreadsheet this year I’ve finished far less products this year than I do normally (although I stopped logging perfume samples this year) – the value is also around half of what I’d finished in 2019 and 2018! I’m intrigued to see where I come in at by the end of 2020. I have purchased far less this year and it has helped me undertake good declutter through the year and restock on new products that I’ve been excited about.
How has your empties gone this year?
