Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Mask – Face Mask Friday #65

Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Mask Review

It’s been almost two months since I last did a Face Mask Friday – in that time gap I have to admit, I’ve been fairly distracted and barely found the time to sit down and treat my skin for 15 minutes. When the Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Mask arrived a few weeks ago in November’s edition of the Tili Box I was intrigued.

I’ve noticed a lot on Instagram lately that there’s a lot of brands popping up which I’d consider – “social media fed” and a lot of the skincare brands seem to have masks. That’s left me a little bit curious about a few brands as the price points are often not particularly cheap retailing somewhere around the £30-50 mark, which for me as a product I can’t see or sniff somewhere before I buy, is a bit of a no go. But I did have it in mind to try so Social Media based beauty brands for a post – and one I’d seen around was Sand & Sky, so perfect timing really!

Sand and Sky oddly whilst included in QVC’s beauty box Tili – isn’t actually sold by them currently. I don’t know whether this was a way of testing the waters with their customer base, or brands are maybe paying to be apart of the box – but this seemed a little odd to me. It is however stocked on the likes of Beauty Bay, and just like I mentioned it comes in at just under £40 for a pot of this.

Whilst I do love a clay mask – but £40 is a bit steep for my pockets (admittedly it does come with a face mask brush), especially for a “basic” clay based mask – which most high street brands have a version of for around £5-12. This brand focuses on the use of Australian Pink Clay as it’s core ingredient which was making me think it was going to be something similar in colour to the Origins Rose Clay mask. Disappointedly for something calling itself pink clay, it was surprisingly, not really all that pink?

Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Mask texture

To me I would describe this as a murky mushroom shade rather than pink. It was a pure creamy clay texture with not a fleck of grain or scrub particles. Clay masks I normally find spread quite far but I was surprised at just how often I found I was having to squeeze a bit more out of the tube. I thought I might get three uses out of this sample, but I managed nearly two – not quite reaching all of my face on the second run, but enough to have given this enough of a test for a review. Clay face masks I normally expect a relatively slow “set”, taking anywhere between 10-20 minutes to feel dry to the touch, this one however I felt dried on the skin within minutes.

So what makes this mask special? It’s rich in Vitamin A which is a superb ingredient – known more commonly now as retinol. Retinol is superb for a lot of skins, it’s used to treat acne as well as a popular anti ageing ingredient thanks to it’s ability to stimulate the dermis level of the skin (where capillaries, and blood vessels sit) thus reducing the appearance of wrinkles and give the effect of tightening. The mask feels like its “doing something” thanks to a soft tingling feeling. If you have the most sensitive skins I would definitely proceed with caution before trying.

I’ve struggled to find out more information specifically about Australian Pink Clay and what makes that an important ingredient. I’m not sure whether it’s rich in Vitamin A, whether that’s added afterwards – or whether it’s special as it simply has a light pink hue.

After rinsing away my soft felt soft, smooth and maybe moderately firmer. The appearance of my skin was really not particularly different. I particularly love clay masks for draining oil and toxins out of my skin. I never recommend using a clay mask and then putting makeup on straight away, as masks tend to keep encouraging oils draining out your skin, clay masks are an evening or sunday activity when I have nothing to do for the next 12-24 hours. This one noticeably did continue to pull the *crap* out of my skin – however for the next few days I found my skin was far less oily.

The packaging of this sample isn’t really reflective of the product if you were to buy the full size since it comes in a pot rather than a squeezy tube. Personally when it comes to clay masks I do prefer a tube as they feel less messy – but I guess at least this one comes with a brush.

This is currently included in Beauty Bay’s Black Friday sale and is £27.65 – which makes it a more palatable price in my opinion. If you’re keen on giving the Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Mask a try then now is a good as time as any to give it a whirl for yourself. Whilst I only got a few uses out of it and my experience was good, the reviews for this on Beauty Bay are actually surprisingly good, with an average rating of 4.5 stars. Had I not have so many masks which are a) open and b) still in need of testing I would be considering giving this pot a good try out.

Let me know if you’ve found any amazing products from brands born on social media.

You know ill totally check that out! It just sucks because if its not from Holland, I have to pay an additional VATTax which is usually expensive. I just ordered from the US and had to pay an extra $30 at the post just to recieve it. On top of the already $20 shipping ona $85 order. So sometimes its just not worth it :(*
