Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lipstick Review

Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lipstick Review

I won’t lie, over the past six months or so I’ve kinda gotten over liquid lipsticks – I started doing a big compilation post of comparing loads of formulas but I ran out of steam with doing it and it turned me off them almost completely. As a result, I can’t remember when the last time I purchased one was (okay since I started writing this I did get a couple from the Jeffree Star Christmas collection!) and I’ve found myself gravitating back towards lipstick in bullet form. About two months ago I had a package turn up from Pixi which had repiqued my interest in them, I’d heard great things about the Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lipstick formula but had been yet to try them. So over the past month I’ve really given them a good test.

I was kindly sent the MatteLast Liquid Lip line which included all eleven of the recently expanded shade range –  and boy – that had me excited. I’ve tried a fair bit of Pixi in the past, but this was my first experience with their lip products which left me very intrigued to see what they had to offer.

One of the things I love about Pixi is that it stands out as a brand, it’s pastel green packaging paired with copper writing can’t fail to stand out within your handbag or makeup bag and they hit this packaging of this product overall bang on. As a product it feels nice to hold and touch, but it doesn’t have a huge footprint which means it stores very nicely. It’s a lovely square acrylic tube, see through so you can easily see the shade, topped with the iconic green lid. Once the lid is unscrewed the applicator is revealed as a teardrop shape – or as they call it, the Pixi Petal applicator.  With an open middle which creates a well for products without picking up so much that it’s excessive and you’re not manoeuvring too much product around the lips. The doe-foot also has a slight curve which means it hugs the lips when applied.

Overall the application is fairly easy in front of the mirror- the tapered applicator isn’t the easiest for on to go as it requires a skilled hand and pair of eyes, but it is very precise. I do find with some of the brights in particular I like finishing the edges with a brush if I’m trying to have the most even finish, but I think that’s me being cack-handed and my skill has deteriorated after a few months away from using liquid lipsticks as frequently.

When the range originally launched there was just five shades available, all very neutral. Whilst they’ve expanded adding six new shades I’m still craving a bit more diversity in the range that gives you a clue that this has become a formula which I like enough to want more of. I’d love some more dark colours in here, burnt terracottas, and some more plummy and mauve tones too. There are a couple of shades on the lighter section and the rosier section where I feel like they are a bit too similar to each other, but that being said there is lots of choice and a neutral for just about everyone. They’ve stayed very much true their brand with wearable colours, I think there’s more shades which they could add however whilst still feeling like Pixi.

Thoughts on the Formula

The formula isn’t the fastest drying, but it doesn’t accentuate every line in your lips either as it’s a nice, thin formula – thicker creams and mousse texture which dry quickly tend to create that zapped from moisture look. It takes around 15 minutes until I consider these to be dry – it looks more matte than it feels on the lips which makes a welcome change to most formulas too. That is likely down to be down to the inclusion of Rosehip Oil in the formula which is an excellent nourisher. Sometimes I’ve found adding a smidge of lip balm in the afternoon dotted right in the middle helps with hydration – particularly now as we’re coming into winter, but I can wear them for a good 4-5 days in a row without my lips feeling like they’re slowly making my lips as dry as a desert. Which again, is more than I can say than most liquid lips – I can’t think of any which feel as comfortable all day long.

If you’ve been following me on Instagram stories you’ll know I’ve been wear testing these MatteLast Liquid Lips and I’ve had so many compliments through the day on how these were looking without any touch ups. My first proper wear test online was the shade ‘Real Red’ (shown in the above insta) which is a gorgeous bright pure red – I normally avoid a lot of reds because I fear I’m going to end up looking like the joker, however with this it proved to me that this formula is virtually indestructible. It survived a Cheese Festival, Cake and Tea and was still on my lips for another 6 hours after that. I had that on for 12 hours straight and whilst it started showing some signs of wear right in the middle towards the end of the day – I could have easily worn that I think for another 1-2 hours.

It doesn’t flake off, or dry up into “balls” of product – it wears gracefully away from the inside of the lips outwards (which means the fading is less noticeable as the edges remain perfect) – it’s not obvious that it’s smudging. All of these shades (bar one) perform exactly the same as each other they are opaque in one coat and last throughout the day really well. One shade Berry Burst needs an extra layer to be fully opaque – and I find it feels a bit heavier on the lips as a result, it’s nice but I don’t like it as much as the rest.

How to Remove

I’ve found the best way to remove the Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lipstick is with something oily – I’ve been reaching for a cleansing balm which breaks it down with ease and washes away easily without staining my face creating a barrier between the skin and the lips. Makeup wipes and micellar soaked pads do work, but more scrubbing is required – and I tend to go the easy route which adds a bit of moisture back into my lips and skin at the same time.

The finish up close

Pixi Mattelast Liquid Lipstick Real Red

I would hope that it’s clear from my review that I absolutely adore these. I love how reliable they are and stand up superbly with eating and drinking throughout the day, and that I can feel confident wearing bright colours all day at work without the need to check my appearance in the mirror every 30 minutes. If you like high pigment and longevity, I don’t think this formula will leave you disappointed.

The Pixi MatteLast Liquid Lipsticks are priced at £16 each, some people I’ve known have said that that feels a bit pricey, but they compare with other brands at the same price point, if not going one step better and I know that these have become firm favourites for me. There are a few places to get Pixi online, not everywhere has the full shade range, but you can find them from Pixi (UK) directly here, ASOS here and M&S here (bad reviews on M&S due to photos not being accurate of shades!).  Formula is Paraben Free & not tested on animals.

What is your current go-to lip formula?

These colours are so nice! I haven’t tried a lot of matte liquid lipsticks as I tend to prefer traditional lipsticks in a bullet but the formula of these does sound good πŸ™‚ Love that red on you! <3

Voted! Best of luck, Rachael!! I hope you’ll win πŸ˜‰πŸ˜˜

I love the longevity of liquid lipsticks, but hate the prep. So technically, I have never been on that bandwagon.

Thank you Joyce! Haha I don’t really prep my lips at all – I put a balm on every night and scrub once or twice a week and that seems enough for me!

Lucky you, mine cracks all the time. So high maintenance that I gave up for a while 🀣
