Spongeclean : The New Way to Clean Your Makeup Sponges

Basic Beauty Tools Spongeclean

Sorry if you saw this post last week, it went up prematurely with no photos ready so I took it offline! This should be a short and sweet review today, but never the less it was a post I wanted to get up. I find when it comes to the chore of cleaning brushes that sponges often finding a product that performs just as well for cleaning makeup sponges and beauty blenders can be hard. Well it’s time to meet Spongeclean.

Last year I reviewed the makeup sponges from the brand Basic Beauty Tools and their Spongedry drying rack as a way to hygienically dry your sponges. They have been my favourite sponges that I’ve ever used and after year whilst there are a few which are showing a few signs of wear and tear they’ve held up amazingly well.

They’ve recently expanded their line out to include a new product called Spongeclean – the liquid foundation blender cleanser. The product is a gel cleanser that is made and manufactured in the UK and is also cruelty free. The cleaner is designed to gentle on delicate sponge material to stay feeling new by containing ingredient to condition the sponge to keep the texture bouncy. The fresh pear scent of the liquid makes the always often boring task of cleaning makeup tools a little bit more enjoyable.

I usually use my favoured collection of beauty sponges once each, let them all build up until they’re all dirty and then start again with a fresh batch for the week. It just so happened when this arrived I’d got a pile of sponges ready to be cleaned from both Basic Beauty Tools and Beauty Blender so I ended up putting it to the test against both types.

Basic Beauty Tools Spongeclean Review

The cleanser costs £7.99 for 250ml worth of product which comes with a pink flip top lid – it reminds me a little bit of the Bioderma packaging. If I had one criticism it would be that that the type of plastic is a bit too solid and I find that sometimes it’s too easy to squeeze too much out on occassion and could do with something a bit more flexible.

I’ve been testing a very high coverage, pigmented thin liquid foundation over the past few weeks and I’ve suspected that what I had been using to clean my sponges hadn’t been doing a good enough job of sinking past the first layer. After a bit of trial and error as to whether it was better to do a drop or two at at time, rinsing and repeating or going in with a bigger blob at once I found that the first was more effective and less wasteful with product.

Spongeclean Before and After

I place a drop of this on the sponge and massage gently around my hands before squeezing out under the warm trickling tap. Once I’ve done this two or three times, I find that the water starts running clear and the brush has been left nice and bouncy as promised. Both brands of sponges washed out just as well as each other using this product and I’m left wondering how there hasn’t been a product that has existed like this for longer.

I have trialled testing cleaning brushes too with this and it does work well for those as well, but I do find that the formula is particularly effective on blender sponges, but it’s nice to know that it can cover both bases. I’ll be interested to see whether long-term it keeps the sponge feeling in much better condition (as it’s going to be hard to know without starting with the fresh sponge and seeing how I feel like it deteriorates). They now have a complete system for good hygienic care for your sponges in three steps, blend, wash and store.

If you’re interested in purchasing any items from Basic Beauty Tools you can get 20% off with the code ‘RACHAEL’ whilst checking out on their website – the sponges are well worth a try and at £5.99 they’re the best in the business (yep they beat out beauty blender!). Normally I throw the sponges out and buy new ones. My daughter cleans hers with liquid soap.

I always revert to liquid soap when I run out of something ‘proper’, often works just as well or cleaning but can find them a bit drying!
Thank you for your comment about my photos 😀

I used to be a brush person but I find that sponges work so much better for my skin type! I know I don’t know where my original images went I had them all edited and ready I must have deleted them before I uploaded them

Very nice review!! I like to clean my beauty sponges with Baby Johnson shampoo cause it’s not harmful but I’ll definitely try this one out!
