Five Beauty Products I Regret Buying

Five Beauty Products I Regret Buying

A fair chunk of time has past since I last did a Beauty Products I Regret Buying post, but as I’ve been having a good old declutter its helped me find products that I’ve shoved out of reach, and most of the time they’ve been shoved because I haven’t been very impressed with them. So here are five products that have stood out to me as items that I wish I’d never bought…

Beauty Products I Regret Buying- YSL Black Opium

YSL Black Opium Perfume

This is the only one from my collection which I hadn’t put out of the way, and out of these five it’s one I regret now I’ve got it, but I lusted after it for so long! I absolutely love the scent of this perfume… floral, fruity and warm notes all balance well and the whole palette really appeals to me. So why a regret? I hear you ask, longevity. For a high end perfume this just doesn’t last on my skin at all, I’ve become accustomed to if I’m spending £50+ on a perfume being able to smell it on items of clothes for days, and this one can’t even hold on for six hours. Luckily I snagged this in the sale at Christmas, but I would not purchase it again or recommend it. If you’re interested in my full review you can find it here.

Beauty Products I Regret Buying - Makeup Geek Lip Products

Makeup Geek Lip Products

I’m counting these three as one (because eight products I regret did not sound as catchy!). I picked up three Makeup Geek lip products around 18 months ago after running up quite a collection of Marlena’s shadows, and unfortunately despite picking up three different lip products, I’ve failed to get on with any of them. The  iconic lipstick in the shade Proper on the surface is nice, it’s a gorgeous shade but when it applies it turns a different colour, not in a ‘ooh, that’s cool’ way, but in a way that’s goes really patchy. The two liquid lips are both on my least favourites list when it comes to liquid lips. The Plush lip Matte in the shade Cougar is a bright fuchsia tone which has such high pigment, but it’s such a dry thick heavy mousse texture it just falls off the lips. Finally the Plush Lip Cream in the shade Troublemaker, a bad choice of colour in a bright lilac purple but also the formula is more like a pigmented gloss that never sets into place.

Beauty Products I Regret Buying MAC In the Flesh

MAC In the Flesh Eyeshadow Palette

This eyeshadow palette was used a little bit on me, but mostly on my bridesmaids on my wedding day, and I went and repurchased it after. This was shoved in the back end of no where in my cupboard, it’s such a boring palette. I haven’t gotten around to reviewing this yet, and I will do at some point but it’s such a boring palette for me – I’ve got so into using colours and tonal shades but so many of these are so similar on the eye. I think it would be a great palette for a makeup artist to use in their kit but unless you like a true plain palette then this isn’t the one for you.

J One Jelly Pack Primer

This is the most recent addition to my collection, I heard amazing things about this primer and it’s performance for oily skin but this has to be the amongst the worst performing beauty products I’ve tried for my skin. This is one of my first steps into using K-Beauty makeup, the texture of this is really bizarre, I’ve heard it described as a cross between lube and glue and oddly, that description is bang on. However no matter what foundation I’ve paired this with has not worked well, it causes my foundation to separate through the day, only increases the appearance of oils and at the end of the day makes my foundation look like separated cake batter. The reviews of this are fantastic but it just must be a bad pairing with my skin.

MAC Soft and Gentle Highlighter

Sadly the second MAC item in the list, I purchased this after it was used on me for makeup I had done for my work Christmas party, it’s such a classic highlighter to be honest I was surprised I’d never tried it.  For about 80% of the year this is too pale for me to show up on my skin, I can use it for a couple of months whilst I’m at my ghostliest over winter. This is a great highlighter with medium impact for pale skins, but it’s not the best colour match for me!

So there are my regrets, I’d  be interested to hear if you’ve tried and loved any of these, also any product regrets that you have tried and think should be on your miss-list too!

I purchased MAC’s Soft and Gentle online only the other day, hope I don’t regret it after hearing you’re not the biggest fan. I paid for it with gift cards so at least I’m not too out of pocket if I’m not keen on it. I am paler than you though so I might like it. Is it a subtle highlight?

It’s buildable, but on first swatch it’s pretty subtle – I think it will be much better suited to your skin tone than mine!

I like subtle highlights, fingers crossed! 🙂

I love soft and gentle! You should try applying it straight after applying a setting spray. I always find that when I want it to pop more, adding it to slightly wetter skin gives it more impact ✨

That’s a good tip! I don’t think it would make much difference to my complexion colour at the moment, but I’ll try that when winter rolls back around!

I wanted to buy the YSL perfume black opium but the Nuit Blanche one but if the longevity sucks, I won’t buy it at all. Thanks for sharing your opinion on these products, it’s very helpful!

I think it’s worth if you can going into a shop spritzing yourself and testing the longevity of it through the day before you buy! I wish I had done, whilst I smelt it a lot pre buying I wish I’d tried to give it a proper wear test to find it didn’t last on my skin

Nothing worse than a product you regret buying. I find eye shadows the hardest to part with. I haven’t tried any of these products but have a small box of my own that will be hitting the curb shortly.

*LOL* I remembered back in the day that you disliked this MAC palette. Not surprised that it made it to your list haha. I read this post last night, but it looks like my comment & like never came through. O well~~ I am back 😛

I think I’ve mentioned before that it’s been a regretful purchase. Way too boring for me I don’t know what I was thinking!

I’ve only tried eyeshadows from Makeup Geek, and from this post I’m not going to be trying a lip product any time soon, the formula sounds pretty terrible, which is a shame! I used to love Soft and Gentle, but I’m struggling with it lately, as it’s coming off so dark, which is a shame! Great post!xx

I really like the Makeup Geek brushes, but apart from that that’s all i’ve tried bar the lip products and the eyeshadows. Yet to try their contours, blushes, liners and highlights. Ahh you have the opposite issue with soft and gentle! Too pale for me, too dark for you!! xxxx

That’s disappointing about the longevity of the YSL perfume. It sometimes so shocking how long wearing some inexpensive fragrances are like body mists from Bath & Body Works. Meanwhile, the Bobbi Brown perfume in Beach lasts me an hour, tops. 😛

Speaking of Makeup Geek… that’s one of my regrets. I lusted after their eye shadows for so long and now that I’ve tried them. Meh. They apply ok but the wear time on them are terrible on me. They fade and crease despite every preventative measure I use which works for other shadows. I even prefer ColourPop shadows over MUG ones.

I’ve been toying with picking up MAC Soft & Gentle for ages since it’s such a cult favourite. The other one I’ve been wanting is Lightscapade. I prefer more subtle highlights though so I might like them.

I know! There are some gems out there that are at the cheap end of the spectrum and if you’re charging over average (let alone cheap!) the performance has to be there!
Ahh man! The Makeup Geek Shadows are my favourite – alongside Colourpop, they work pretty much identically for me in terms of pigmentation, blendability and wear time!
Lightscapade I always pick up as it looks so pretty, definitely way too pale for me! Soft and Gentle would look great on you, I think I’m just a bit too tan for it!

Fun fact, I actually read a study once that listicles with “weird” numbers so for example eight, nine etc instead of five, ten etc have a higher click through rate! Just as an aside to your “eight products sounding less catchy”. Totally agree about most of these though, the MAC palette looks a bit dull and it’s a shame about the lipsticks as I bet the colours would look fab on you!

Haha that’s funny because in food they say that threes and fives are more appealing!
I have done it in the past for a few posts like these but in my head the MUG stuff was one purchase!

It’s such a shame that MAC Soft and Gentle isn’t right for you. It’s one of my favourite highlighters and as I am so pale looks great on me Xx
