Look Incredible Standard Box April 2018 – Review & Unboxing

Look Incredible Standard Box April 2018 – Review & Unboxing

The past few boxes from Look Incredible have left me very disappointed with the subscription. Since their move to being bi-monthly I was hoping this would mean that it would give them more time to find quality products but sadly it seems to have slipped so far the other way. This box was my last chance for the subscription that I’ve had for so long and I’ll start by saying that this is the worst box I’ve ever received from them and I’ve already cancelled. So this is my Goodbye Look Incredible post that also features my reasons for unsubscribing as well as the review of this months box.

Firstly it’s going to be a pretty heavy beauty box week – sorry, it’s just the way that the deliveries fell this week!

For those who aren’t aware, Look Incredible is a beauty box with three levels of subscription. I receive the standard edition of the box which is £25 which comes bi-monthly and contains full size items once upon a time it was high end brands, now it’s a mix but mostly low end. They have two other boxes – a £35 deluxe box which is monthly and is high end brands, and a £65 premium box which features top notch deluxe items that are often currently stocked.

If I could summarise this box it would be : Young Teen / Kids Makeup.

Jelly Belly Body Butter Set (3 x 100ml) – £12.99

I was genuinely surprised to see this and not in a good way – as it’s something that I would have never expected to see in this box which has been known for such premium brands in the past. This is something I might give to one of my younger cousins or family members but I can’t see myself ever using. They smell sickly sweet in their Coconut, Vanilla and Chocolate Pudding scent (which turned my stomach!). I’m not a body butter fan at the best of times and this was no exception. These are pictured as part of a boxed set which they have been removed from – there are sticky pads on the packaging which kept them facing the right way in the box but the packaging in general feels oddly sticky like they’ve been covered in honey at some point, I had to use many a anti-bac wipe to get these feeling clean!

True Isaac Mizrahi Perfect Palette with 3 Brushes – £21.99
Oh where to start with this? The brushes actually feel a bit nicer feeling than I expected… but I can never see myself using them and I don’t think they will pick up pigment very well at all. The palette has a kind of sweet folksy flower design but it feels very cheap in the hand and when you open it… wow.

Mmmm Sweaty

Wow, but not in a good way of course. There are four shadows in 80s ‘Barbie’ colours of a shimmery peach champagne, pink, periwinkle and a chocolate brown. Two concealer shades which are only moderately different from each other and would probably suit a NC35 skin tone – they’re way too dark for me and they look sweaty with beads of water sitting on top *insert green face emoji*. There are then a bronzer shade which is very red toned and a matte ‘translucent’ shade which looks to ghostly to be properly translucent. Incredibly lost for words on this one – this just screams kids makeup to me.

Borghese Superiore State of the Art Mascara  – £14.00

A repeat product! Whilst this mascara has quite nice packaging it’s not a good one and just coats the lashes lightly. Sad to see this included again, if they were gonna repeat a product it could have at least been a good one!

Urban Decay Lip Love in Drizzle – £12.99

A slight saving grace for me as a first impression – but this product is discontinued and has been in this packaging for quite some time. These were discontinued and put into a different packaging but the last reviews I can find on this on MakeupAlley is 2013 – which is a pretty good indication of when this was discontinued and if this is a 5 year old product I’m genuinely a little shocked at it’s inclusion. This is a glossy balm that contains honey, these generally hand a tint but this is such a pale pink it would pay off clear on the lips. I don’t feel like I want to use this product.

Rodial XXL Lip Liner in Nude – £9.00

When the only item I’m not annoyed about in a £25 box is a £9 lip liner something has definitely gone wrong. Whilst I do have this product… I already have it thanks to it being a magazine freebie alongside the eyeliner in June last year. A nice creamy pink toned nude that pairs really well with most of my go-to lip shades. But not something I think I need a duplicate for so it will probably head to my giveaway pile as I just don’t wear lip liner that often.

I think it’s pretty clear that this box was a total bust for me and I wasn’t impressed with any of the items in the box. I have emailed Look Incredible and gave them my feedback on the box and I have unsubscribed – whilst I’ve said I’m not looking for refunds or exchanges this box just didn’t hit the spot at all and I’d rather spend my money elsewhere. As of me writing this I haven’t heard back from them, I emailed them on Friday – as of yet but if I do get a response worthy of including I will update this post.

Reasons for Saying Goodbye

Over the past year or there have been increasing incidents of repeat products in the box, it was only in February when this last happened when I was assured categorically that this shouldn’t be something that would happen again. Yet here I was on my next box month seeing a mascara that was a repeat of another product. It takes away the initial excitement of receiving a box when there are repeats in place and waiting 1-2 weeks for a replacement product, then having to return the other.

My second annoyance is the value they give the products – I get there’s an RRP that they stick to, but for the most part these boxes have been featuring discontinued or repackaged items for some time now – this box was listed as a value of £70.97. Using their own website every RRP is lower than what they list and totals £47.96 if I scout around the internet I can find the Jelly Belly body butter set for £3.99… they have it listed for £12.99 on the card and £9.99 on the website.

The box bares almost no resemblance to the box I signed up for – MAC, Too Faced, Ciate, Stila, Bare Minerals were all names that were found in the beginning of the boxes. Jelly Belly body butters…? Nope that would not have been apart of the same line up.

The box has slightly risen in price since it first started which happened around the start of the decline in the quality of the boxes – I was hoping that would mean that they’d recognised they couldn’t provide the same quality at that price and I was happy for the increase if there would be an improvement – but this box is even worse than it was at the beginning of the end. Again I was hoping that the switch to bi-monthly would also mean more time to curate better products and need to include less fillers but sadly this has bared no impact either.

The deluxe version of this box is more promising to me and is something that I’m like “that’s the box I signed up for at the start” – but at £35 a month I feel like I’d rather invest that into something from my wish list. If it was bi-monthly like the standard box (or they had an option for it to be) then I’d be tempted for the occasional surprise, but monthly? That turns into £420 a year and would soon tick off those products I always say are too expensive to buy but I want to try and would likely be better invested.

So for now… I’m beauty box subscription free for the first time in about six years – there are none that are currently jumping out at me to try – except for possibly Mintd.

What do you think of this box? Am I being too harsh? Let me know your thoughts in the comments

I completely agree with your review, the palette looks awful!
I have just signed up to the deluxe box because I saw there was a tarte palette in it, I can’t justify £35/ month so will probably be cancelling soon!

I think this months deluxe box was lovely and great value, and was half tempted to sign up – but so far I’ve not had a good relationship with tarte shadows and I’m
Not that much of a neutral girl so I decided to leave it!
It’s so odd to me that they made the more expensive box monthly and the cheaper box every other month, the justification on a monthly spend for most people would be the other way round! I just think over two months if I took that £35 quid I could buy myself a High end palette and lipstick that I really wanted!

I said exactly the same things about the box in my review and I’ve already unsubscribed too! This is honestly the worst box I’ve received from them and I think they should just stop the standard box completely if they can’t provide the quality products I signed up for! If the deluxe box was cheaper, I’d consider it but I feel like I could just buy the products I want with the money.

I just think what I could do with £35 a month – over two months I could buy myself a new high end palette and lovely lipstick for example and it be stuff that is genuinely on my wishlist. If it was every other month I’d be more tempted, but every month it’s too much for me and I know I could invest that money better!
I just read your review and saw that you did the maths on the value vs their website too! You’re not missing much with the mascara, I’m sure they’ll send it to you but I didn’t get on well with it the first time round I had it!

      • April 17, 2018 / 12:24 pm

We seem to have had loads of mascaras recently too! I was really shocked when I went and did the maths on their website and like you said the products can be found cheaper elsewhere anyway. I think the option to only get the deluxe box every other month would be good as I still like the idea of beauty boxes but you’re right- if I saved £35 a month I could treat myself to a few highend bits I know I really want!

        • April 17, 2018 / 12:30 pm

I know I have about 12 unopened mascaras as I can’t get through them faster than they arrive, and out of just about every one which they could have resent that was my least favourite!

          • April 17, 2018 / 12:36 pm

They’ve sent me a replacement but I’m not holding out much hope for it! I’m still buying mascara too- not sure why as I also have a backlog of unopened mascaras to get through!

          • April 17, 2018 / 2:10 pm

They’ve not even replied to my email from Friday – to even say “thanks for the feedback”!

          • April 17, 2018 / 2:16 pm

You’d think they’d welcome the feedback! I suspect they’re probably just giving up on this box though which is a shame.

Woah, that’s a shocking box of products. I don’t blame you for unsubscribing one bit x

Not too harsh at all!! Completely justified x

Omg this box! The kids style makeup and body butters, what was they thinking! Sometimes it’s like they’re giving out products they want rid off x

Jelly Belly? That isn’t even a beauty brand as far as I’m concerned and not suprised you unsubscribed. What a crap box!

Wow, that’s a shocking box. More of a £9 than a £25 one. I’d expect these sort of things in Birchbox/glossybox.
I’m here cos I’m tempted by the deluxe version and I wanted to read reviews. I think I’ll just treat myself to an eyeshadow palette of my choice instead.

Thank you so much for this post! I’ve been thinking about subbing to the £25 box as I wanted some more high-end products but I can’t afford the £35 one every month as like you said, I prefer to buy wishlist items with that every month.

I find it so weird that Look Incredible only post 1 instagram post a month and it’s always the deluxe box, trying to find the standard box is quite hard. Even Birchbox seems better than this!

This was a particularly bad box, but it’s been a downwards spiral from I first subscribed / honestly I think you’re better off taking your money and spending it elsewhere at the moment.

They didn’t even end up replying to my email 😬😬

Excellent truthful review , thankyou you’ve saved me £25 pounds a month. What a cheap nasty box and a total insult. I’m also concerned about the use by dates on all their boxed items even in the deluxe box worth checking don’t you think ?

    • July 23, 2018 / 9:29 am

Thanks for your comment, I’ve been keeping an eye on their deluxe box and whilst I think it’s better than this pile of trash, they seem to have one star product for me and the rest doesn’t look that appealing. I’m enjoying spending my money on palettes I’ve actually been lusting after rather than ploughing it into the boxes and be 60% happy with the contents.
