Meet the stylPro – A Helpful or Useless Gadget?

stylPro review - is it worth it

Give me a job to make the world’s most boring job easier, or moderately more entertaining and I will take it. When I heard about the StylPro from my friend Molly who got one for Christmas – it sounded like an object which could make the job of cleaning brushes quicker and more fun. The gadget went on my “watch list” on Boots to see if I spotted it at a price drop – but not long after Lora spotted it in Costco for much cheaper than Boots and I asked her to grab me one.

Costco’s version of the StylPro came with the StylPro Makeup Brush Cleaner which is something which usually comes as extra at £9.00 in Boots, while the tool itself is £39.99 – Costco had this set for £29+VAT – so much cheaper than this would have been individually – and if you have one near you and are a member, this is the place to try and pick one up.

Inside the box comes the bowl, the StylPro tool, and a set of eight rubber ends which slot onto the tool to allow different size brushes to fit on and be cleaned. The first thing that struck me about the bowl was – oh, that’s smaller than I expected – whilst the box was dinky and I wasn’t expecting anything giant – it is smaller than I expected.

The idea of this is that you can wash and dry your brushes in one go, after filling the bowl around about half  way with water/cleaner. You put your brush into the rubber holder, and place on the StylPro, place into the bowls water and swirl around gently  (I’ve found placing mine on the bottom gently helps with stubborn dirt), and then once clean lifting out of the water (but not out of the bowl completely) to dry off the brush completely and be ready to use straight away.

The tool itself gives me electric toothbrush vibes – it’s not particularly heavy in weight – which for the most part is okay – but the big, heavy handled brushes this does seem to create a bit of an issue – the gadget doesn’t quite have enough gusto and it’s audibly and visibly slower at cleaning these brushes over eye brushes. Add to that anything that’s as or more dense than a Real Techniques blush brush will not really dry off completely and aren’t ready to use straight away.

The size of the bowl has been absolutely great for eye brushes, but for larger ones is where it’s struggled – when the bristles are longer there’s not so much room to clean the brush, and dry it all off. This tends to be the bigger, fluffier brushes such as powders, blushes and foundation tools which also tend to be the most dirty. This also means the water gets dirty very quickly and needs changing more frequently, if the bowl was another third bigger I think it would be perfect size – not too big to store but a bit friendlier to use for all brush sizes.

With eye brushes I was staggered at just how dry they were and ready to use straight away – I didn’t find that any of my brushes – even the cheapest 99p brush sets from eBay became misshapen by the violent spinning and drying. If you take a look at the before and after photos below you’ll see how sparkling clean the eye brushes look – but compared to the RT blush brush (used for bronzer that week!) you’ll see there’s still some evidence of pigment left on the brush and is overall you can see it’s not quite dry – however I’ve found if I do this at night they’re always perfectly dry by the next day when just left on my dressing table.

Before stylPro Clean

After stylPro Clean

Now the Brush Cleaner – a thin liquid that I was convinced would do little to aid cleaning, however I have been pleasantly surprised with this – with the motion of the brush the soap creates a nice level of soap suds and once dry the bristles feel nicely conditioned. I’ve also put the system to test using my Violet Voss brush cleansing balm first dipping the brushes into the balm then rinsing in plain pure water in the bowl – and this does work perfectly fine but it does add an extra step and therefore extra time. Whether or not I would repurchase the fluid will ultimately depend as to how much use I felt like I got out of it – at the moment I find myself having to empty and refill the bowl 2-4 times (depending on how many brushes I’ve used) at the end of doing a weekly clean, which means 2-4 doses of this – at £9 a bottle I feel like it doesn’t go maybe I would expect and I’m intrigued to experiment with Micellar Waters or a brush cleanser like Cinema Secrets watered down to see if there’s a more cost effective way to use this.

Ultimately I think that this is a great gadget for eye brushes and I’m finding myself cleaning my brushes more frequently – the convenience of getting them dry and ready for use straight away is perfect. For larger face brushes I just wish that everything was just a little bit bigger to make it easier to use and the motor maybe had two switches for different power modes – a lighter one which won’t ruin eye brushes shapes from being too violent, and a more intense one that can counteract and handle a heavier brush. Either way I’m glad that I have this gadget within easy reach of my beauty cupboard.

You fan find this on the Boots website to buy here.

too bad it doesn’t work as well for bigger brushes. but sounds cool for eye makeup brushes & I like that they’re dry so you can use them right away!

It works okay, but it’s certainly not quite as clean as it manages to get eye brushes! Definitely usable though! x

I’ve seen these little machines around but I was always worried it would damage my brushes. I’m so happy to read that all your brushes were okay after the “spin cycle”. I may have to get one now ๐Ÿ˜Š

The gadget obsessive in me is attracted to the idea, but weirdly I really enjoy brush cleaning day. Itโ€™s strangely therapeutic (I know Iโ€™m weird).
    Funky little gadget though!

I’ve watched so many videos of this contraption and while it’s entertaining, I won’t purchase. It’s way too aggressive for makeup brushes! I would maybe consider it for my cheap synthetic brushes but there’s absolutely no way I’d use this with my Japanese brushes! Can you even imagine me spinning a $100 brush like that… o_O
