The Lesser Known Chulip Lip Balm

Chulip Lip Balm

I wouldn’t normally write a review of a product like this… especially by itself but it had nice little backstory behind it so I wanted to show it some love as this product was an EFFORT to get my hands on. So guys, meet the Chulip Lip Balm.

When we went on our honeymoon last year, our first stop was Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Known for amazing shopping malls I knew this would be the stop on our trip that I would be doing the most shopping, I got in touch with Hari, of Harivain who lives in Malaysia as I had limited time to shop only being in the city for 2 full days and with plenty of sites we wanted to see too. So I asked him for some recommendations of brands I should be looking out for any products which I *needed* to add to my collection. Whilst he gave me some pointers on great brands one item he told me I had to pick up was a Chulip Lip Balm.

That would be easy I thought, but boy was I wrong. This is the item in my life that I have searched out for more than any other – every chemist we walked past I looked for it, every Sephora, every beauty shop. I estimate that over the two days we walked around the city I probably went in an excess of thirty shops on the hunt for this. Not one sales assistant knew what I was talking about and it wasn’t until I was actually on our journey home leg where we had a layover for a few hours back at Kuala Lumpur airport and I was stocking up on some last minute “I have money left and money to burn” items in the pharmacy that I took one last ditch attempt at looking at their lip balms and finally found it. Ben was as glad as I was as it meant we could finally relax and stop wasting the last hours of our honeymoon looking for a bloody lip balm. I probably would have bought all they had left – but this was the last one on the shelf – like it had been left for me.

The Chulip is much like the EOS lip balm style products. That egg like shape has a wonky nipple-like top with a lips outline which overlaps the lid and the base. These are priced at 25.90RM which converts to roughly £4.50 – they aren’t as super cheap as I thought they would be (as most stuff I bought in Malaysia was) and is around the price I’d tend to spend on a lip balm of this type. The name Chulip translates as kissing-lip  – which is quite clever to mimic the action that you make to apply the domed product to the lips.

The Chulip comes in a variety of scents/flavours – mine is “Paris” – a blend of Vanilla, Peach and Raspberry. Whilst I had no choice – that’s the one I would have chosen as a raspberry fiend. Ingredients wise I’ve had to go with what I’ve found on other blogs that are written in English to find out about what it’s made with – they formulation features a quad of oils olive (anti-oxidant and high in vitamin E), macadamia (omega rich & nourishing), nut (softening) and rosehip (anti-ageing).

The flavouring of this is only slightly flavoured to me – and neither is it particularly scented than it is flavoured. On the lips it has a light minty effect that creates a slight tingle that feels very nice on the lips and imagine is kind of plumping too by bringing blood to the lips.

Despite all it’s oils it doesn’t feel oily on the lips – it feels very light and works well under lipsticks because it’s not too heavy feeling. For the past few months I’ve been more inclined to apply this at nighttime and keeping it by my bedside table, however it’s now been migrated to my my handbag lip balm of choice thanks to it being something that’s really easy to apply on the go. We’re away at the weekend in what will probably be a cold, windy and wet Wales for Easter with the dogs – and this will be a coat pocket staple for the entirety of the trip.

Is this something that is revolutionary to my routine? No, it’s a good little lip balm that does it’s job well.
Am I glad I actually found one in the end? Definitely.

The Chulip Lip Balm has been really hard for me to track down online – most sites I’ve checked that specialise in Japanese/Asian beauty and it’s not that easy to find. Whilst I’ve found these on Amazon they’ve very expensive (£18+) the best price for these is in the UK is from eBay – where they come in at around £6.50 including delivery.

Nothing beauty related is cheap in Malaysia and now with the added tax, things got way more expensive. 🙁 We’re heading back to visit my family next year and I’ll hunt down for this lip balm for sure. It really does reminds me of my beloved EOS lip balms but this might be a little more hydrating.

I do prefer it to the eos balm slightly I wouldn’t go out of my way to hunt it down in the uk, but would pick it up again if I saw it somewhere!
Oh really?! I didnt find it expensive there at all – cosmetics were no cheaper than the uk but no more expensive either and food was so cheap!

I always rationalize if it’s the last one on the shelf, it was an omen and I’m meant to have it! 😛
I have this in the tinted version which I really enjoy – I wish EOS would come out with some tinted ones (not those frosty ones they have, ew!) I’m trying to remember how much I paid for mine in Japan but I think it was less than C$10.

Oh hi stranger! Ahh in my online hunt for this I didn’t find any tinted ones! I don’t think we have the frosty eos lip ones here, probably for the best though!
