Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment – Face Mask Friday #55

Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment

The penultimate of four Glamglow masks that I’ve been trying since December – and the one that from the set I purchased that was full sized, so I was keen to get trying the Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment – because I knew it would be one I could get a lot of use out of.

The full size Glamglow packaging is simply glorious. The tubs are made of metal on the outside whilst the mask itself sits within plastic on the inside so it doesn’t react with the metal. The quality of the packaging is lovely, and feels like a luxe and heavy product – almost worthy of the hefty price tag that they come with. Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment – “The White One” – is a clearing treatment designed for spot treatments, and over the past few weeks I’ve definitely been fighting breakouts appearing and it’s something I could put it to good use.

This is a dark charcoal mask which dries down to a dry clay like mask. The formula is lightly peppered with fragments of leaves which take much longer to dry out which causes a spotted like effect on the skin. I was encouraged by the fact I could see where my pores were through the mask, because I could see it sinking into the areas where it was meant to treat and the areas I was hoping I’d see the most difference. The mask is due to be left on the skin for 5-10 minutes to dry before rinsing away, the charcoal and clay is meant to be particularly good for oily skins as the mask draws out impurities whilst the drying effect of the clay dries out the skin reducing sebum production. All great in theory.

Unfortunately the first time I used it I had a reaction and I decided to put it away for a good 6-8 weeks before I tried it out again. I came back to it three weeks ago and unfortunately I had the same reaction when I used the mask all over my face. Now I certainly wouldn’t describe my skin as sensitive normally but after just a minute or so on my face it started to feel like it was hot and that it was burning before becoming very itchy. The first time I tried the mask I freaked out and didn’t risk leaving it on – but for the sake of experiment when I revisited it recently I left it on for the full 20 minutes. And it was uncomfortable pretty much for that whole time.

The mask is very dry as it dries and it really has to be scrubbed off – my Magnitone is a real help for lifting it away from the skin – but it is prone to creating grey splashes when mixed together all over my nice white tiles. After the mask was rinsed away it was clear that this mask was just not great for me to use all over – my forehead  in particular was the worst place – but the edges of my cheeks and chin were also quite sore. You can see the redness that formed in a perfect line on my forehead below. That redness took several hours to dry down and my skin felt uncomfortably warm for the first 15 minutes to an hour.

The next day my skin did feel soft and look glowing – In terms of oil control I feel like the differences were slightly noticeable and maybe if used more regularly then it would become more of a noticeable change. However overall the genuine uncomfortableness whilst this was on and the redness that proceeded afterwards just meant that for the results I got from this mask that it just isn’t worth it for me used as a full mask. A REAL shame as there’s a bloody tonne of this to go through.

I took a read of Glamglow’s website and it recommended if sensitive skin that it’s used as a spot treatment instead – so since the reaction I’ve been putting this to the test as a spot treatment instead. I’ve placed the mask on areas where I’ve got a spot brewing or a spot emerged to test what kind of reactions I had to it and how it performed on how well progresses the pimple was. I will say – I do still get discomfort from using it in this way, but it takes a lot longer for the mask to almost penetrate below the spot to the nerves.

New spots emerging this did nothing for me, I didn’t find that it helped reduce them. decrease redness or provide any noticeable changes to these types of blemishes. I left spots to “come out and flourish” and tested the mask on those and still I felt like it didn’t particularly deliver in helping to reduce those either. It was only when there was broken skin (aka, I popped it), that I felt like the mask actually helped pull out the gunk from what was underneath – however this made the process go back to being more painful again, and the job of trying to wash away was quite aggressive and not one I’d like to repeat on an area that is in need of healing.

This is Glamglow’s best selling mask and there are plenty of people who love it and it’s incredibly well rated online. For what it does for me this is not worth the £42 by any stretch unfortunately and I wouldn’t recommend this to any one who has sensitive skin in the slightest. Like I said I would not put myself in that category and I had a pretty extreme reaction. If you’re desperate to try it I’d highly recommend starting with the smaller tubs to test whether your skin can hack it. I do think there are other masks out there that do a better job of what I was expecting this to do (one of which I have coming up in a Face Mask Friday over the next few weeks) which is one tenth of the price of this mask.

Have you tried the Glamglow Supermud Clearing Treatment?

Love this review!! 😊 I tried the Blaq charcoal face mask and I think you’d like it, it’s in my March Birchbox review post 😊

Oh rach! Your poor face looked so sore. I had the same reaction to the exfoliating one they have in the black tube 🙁 like you say, I don’t typically have sensitive skin either. Very strange and such a shame! Xx

Oh no, it’s so disappointing when products make your skin react badly, especially when it’s such an expensive product! 😔 I’ve not tried Glamglow or any similar masks for that reason. Looking forward to the next one! Xx

I have tried this via tester when it first launched. But I find the Freeman Avocado mask to do the same thing for me and that is only 8 euros as opposed to 55 for glamglow. I have also heard this dries out quickly in the jar making it difficult to use up completely. For something this expensive, it truly doesn’t outperform cheaper options.

So sorry to hear you reacted, I hope you’re able to pass this along to someone who is able to use it x

I’ve reacted to one of the Glamglow masks as well – I think maybe the original one.

What a shame it reacts like that on you. Definitely not worth persevering with. I have to say I absolutely love this mask though which is strange because my skin can be sensitive but I don’t have any reaction, it just clears my skin out when it’s at its worst. Have you tried the Body Shop Tea Tree mask? That’s another one I go for when my skin needs a clear out x

Your poor skin! Yikes! I have tried multiple GlamGlow masks and they don’t do much for me at all. I have always found the brand to be overpriced for what it is.

Oh no! That looks painful. I liked this mask but didn’t love it – overall it wasn’t really worth the price. Plus it dried out in the tub halfway through!

Eek! The shot of your skin taken after removing the mask is exactly how I reckon mine would look; though it sounds great for putting to work as a spot treatment 🙂 I’ve heard a lot about this brand, I’m certainly curious and may well give this mask a go sometime myself (also as a spot treatment!).

    Have a lovely weekend!

I tried this a while back. At first I loved it, but after a while I found it so drying, even if I just applied it to blemishes once a week or so. I’m not a fan of Glamglow as I’ve tried two masks and no great results. I can’t believe how red it made your poor face. I definitely wouldn’t use it again as it’s given you a reaction xx

Its so sucky that you reacted to the mask! This mask is a holy grail of mine for acne care. But when I use it I use a q-tip and apply it directly on-top of my acne. I’m guessing if I put it all over my face I would have a similar reaction to yours. It’s definitely a potent product 🙈

Such a bummer this didn’t work for you! My skin runs a little sensitive, too, so I like to try out sample sizes before I commit to the full size with skincare, if I think it might irritate me.

Sorry for the bad reaction to it. One of my favotie mask is the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask if you wanted to give it a try, it super good.
