Smitten Polish Hug Me Swatch & Review

Smitten Polish Hug Me

There’s been a real lack of polish reviews around here recently – up until last week I hadn’t painted my nails in well over a month as it’s felt completely pointless with endless streams of DIY and decluttering chipping my nails within minutes. I’ve just stayed away, I decided to treat myself over the weekend to a fresh lick of paint (on my nails instead of the house this time), and this colour “Smitten Polish Hug Me” was the one I went for after a quick route through my “to review” box.

Back at the start of last year I placed my first indie polish order and one of the items I picked up was a mystery goodie bag, where I listed my preferences for blue, pinks and purples, and this shade ‘Hug Me’ was one that ended up in the trio of polishes. Smitten Polish was a completely unknown brand to me – but I loved their fun chunky logo. On trying to do some research on this brand I’ve found out (thanks to Instagram), that they’re now known as Dreamland Lacquer (I must say I prefer Smitten Polish!).

When I first saw the shade Hug Me, I must admit I wasn’t too in love at first sight. It reminded me of the terribly 80s-90s pink frost look that looked like 90% of my Mum’s polish collection when I peeked into her drawer as a little girl. Those polishes tended to look streaky on the nail and in my head I’ve always steered away from this shade as I’ve expected that they would all be crap quality.

Hug Me was a pleasant surprise in that on the nail it translates to somewhere between a frost and a microglitter. It definitely has more to it than a frost without being too outlandish an pretty monotone. The pink shade is quite a muted tone which sits on my skintone with a smidge of colour. As the formula of this dried it became quite matte in appearance, but it was surprisingly quite opaque in one coat. I decided to give it a second coat to make sure it was completely even before finishing with a dose of topcoat.

The effect on the nail I found really pretty – but even after patiently waiting I found that the polish was still prone to a long dry time and therefore being knocked too. Once waited for what feels like an eternity for it to dry gives a really pretty look to the nails that’s perfect for spring… and the spring weather I wish we had right now.

The wear time on Smitten Polish Hug Me has been okay, around 3-4 days – nothing staggering but I do think that I am using a particularly rubbish base coat at the moment… nothing seems to bind well with it and everything sits on top like a separate layer – so I’m not holding any polishes performance against it at the moment.

Having looked up Smitten Polish/Dreamland Lacquer I’m intrigued to try more of their shades, the pigment in this one was good, and it applied nicely – it does seem to be a brand that’s a bit more difficult than it was before and is no longer stocked on the main UK indie polish site. If it’s a brand within reach to you, then they are worth trying.

What’s your favourite shade at the moment?

This does look very pretty, shouldn’t be difficult to remove either since it’s not chunky glitter. I’m loving Tiramisu For Two from OPI and I painted my nails with it last night!

I agree with you 100%, my first thought was “I’m pretty sure my mom had that colour”. But it’s so gorgeous and way more wearable than it looks in the bottle 😍

The pigmentation is pretty good but I do stay away from anything frosty…I don’t want to look like my mum. LOL!
