Glamglow Youthmud – Face Mask Friday Revisited

Way back when (cough, 2015) I was pretty new to the Face Mask game and still learning about what impressed me in the Face Mask world. I have always had pretty high expectations of Face Masks, especially when they get pricey – if they can’t do more than what a good cleanser, exfoliator or moisturiser can do then it’s something I already have in my collection and can do the job well. That hasn’t changed but I don’t think I necessarily expect miracles on the same levels any more and can appreciate a different mask for targetting different skin concerns at different times. The Glamglow Youthmud mask was one that I reviewed right at the start of my Face Mask Friday career and it’s one I thought I would revisit almost 3 years on.

In December I splashed my hard earned Boots points on a Glamglow set in the sale, it featured 3 mini tubes at 15ml each alongside a full size tub at 50ml. These 15ml sizes are purchasable and come in a micro-form of the full size in a mini sized version of the full size tub which is what I had in my original review (which is linked at the end). These are a good way to trial GlamGlow but it does feel like half of what you’re paying for is packaging – at £25 for what I calculated originally to be about 4 uses, it comes out at £6.25 per use.

I actually think 4 uses out of this tub is maybe a little generous, I’d say that 3 and a half is more accurate getting one final treatment out to target specific areas such as the t-zone, nose and chin without having quite enough to do a full treatment over the whole face. The full size tub is much better value and if you’re going to try this then that is the way to go if you can bare to spend the £42.

Glamglow is a brand which is best known for it’s masks and it’s only more recently that they’ve started branching out into other skincare items such as cleansers and moisturisers. Youthmud is definitely the mask that I’ve heard most about over the years and for a period of time – around 2014 just before I bought this that you basically couldn’t watch a Youtube video without this being mentioned.

This mask has a lot of different selling points and claims. The mask has a gentle tingling effect which is designed to activate collagen synthesis to replump the skin and aid in elasticity, 3 years ago when I reviewed this I didn’t really appreciate what it was doing to my 25 year old skin, but at 28 the effects of it are more noticeable.

The Glamglow Youthmud mask has chunks of shredded green tea which is scattered through it. In tube form it makes it a little hard to squeeze out and you tend to get a concentration of leaf lump that pops out at the same time from a bottleneck in the hole. I try to evenly and thinly distribute this over the skin. This has a clay like base which dries down over the skin after about 10 minutes, I tend to leave it on for 20-30 minutes. As the mask is washed away the green tea flakes gently exfoliate the skin without being chunky or hard in anyway. The tingling effect becomes slightly re-activated once water mixes with the dried clay and it brings it back to life for the duration of the cleanse.

The green tea is a detoxifying ingredient, whilst the clay like substance is always a favourite for my oily complexion for drying up excess sebum. The combination of the two together leave my skin feeling much less oily for a good 2-3 days. Other properties this mask claim to do is tighten pores and improve skin texture – back in 2015 this is something I thought the mask did do, and whilst if I’m inspecting closely before and after I can see differences on this front I don’t necessarily think the changes are that significantly different. The one claim this has that’s impossible to really measure, especially over a short term use is that it protects against radical damage. I’m not sure what the ingredient/ingredients are within this that should be aiding in this (I’m guessing it’s the green tea though!), but I do feel like it’s a bit of marketing spiel that’s really hard to actually measure and tick a box against.

Overall whilst I do really like Glamglow Youthmud, more-so than I did the first time around I just feel like I wouldn’t get enough uses out of a full size tub to repurchase it, if I had less masks in my collection I could be tempted – but I have a lot to work through at the moment and the need to buy another full size is definitely not something that’s required at this point. I think however you have to have a similar complexion to mine to get the full benefits, I think if you had drier skin this wouldn’t be moisturising enough and the aid it provides to oil control would be completely lost. If you’re gettin’ on a bit and heading into your 30’s and you still live on the oily side of the spectrum then this could be worth a try if you feel like a skincare treat.
