Saved from the Declutter

After Stashy did a big old declutter over on her blog, it seems to have sent a mini wave through the WordPress community of people doing the same. Including me. I’d planned to do a big declutter post too but I realised that I just… well couldn’t be bothered to write that all up! So I thought I’d do a quick skim over of what I threw out, and talk more in detail about the very limited selection of items that I saved from the bin.

My makeup storage is split mainly into two areas, my dressing table has four drawers and holds a decent amount of stuff. I then have some acrylic storage that sits on top of desktop. I have a cupboard in my spare room which is mainly dedicated to shoes – despite popular opinion it isn’t full of makeup. But the top shelf categorised in old My Little Boxes my ‘overflow’ as I called it for anything I wasn’t currently using. I wish I’d taken a photo of this before I decluttered this area completely – I’ve kept the boxes and put them in the loft for when I need to pack up my makeup when we move, but I’ve emotionally let go to these boxes which used to make me happy too.

The issue with this was… well I never actually went into that cupboard to get anything. If it’s not in my vanity it doesn’t get used so I ruthlessly decided to declutter. I also had a good sort out of my vanity and had between the two areas I managed to get a full My Little Box of stuff to give out to my Mum (on first dibs!) and then other family and friends. Then for myself from my overflow I salvaged around half a box of stuff and a few items got selected to ‘Back to MAC’. Overall my collection is a lot, lot smaller.

Overview of Decluttered Stash

For a long time I held onto a lot of bright eyeshadow singles which I’d picked up for various fancy dress occasions as time has gone on I now have lots of bright eyeshadows in my main collection so I’ve decluttered virtually all of these, kept a few neutrals/urban decay ones and passed them on.

One of the largest chunk of items was glosses. I’m not a gloss girl and any that I do like are in my ‘main collection and these were easy to get rid of. There was quite a lot of lip crayons/lipsticks which sat separate to my main collection of lipsticks, I cherry picked a few newer ones that hadn’t had much use and passed them on to my mum, but for the most part they were old, cheap or crappy quality.

All of the foundations I got rid of were because they were way too dark, I’m don’t know anyone with this specific shade of orange, so I got rid completely. I tossed away the handful of cream blushes I had as I don’t have many, powders and concealers I’m good at using up and getting gone so there was none of that to toss away.

Salvaged

Not all of these items are likely to stay in my collection, but there’s some items which are going to be retested before I either bin them, pass them on or throw them away.

Crystal Clear – Illuminate
This is a strobe cream-esque product that has never even been opened. I’m a bit torn whether to keep this or not as I’ve been sent a few similar products recently so could just pop it in my giveaway pile, but I feel like I want to give it a go.

Korres Wild Rose Foundation
At one point I really loved this foundation and it’s about 50% of the way through. I have a feeling this might be too dark for me, but I figured it was worth one more whirl.

Rimmel Match Perfection Ivory
I bought this for when I needed to make myself look like Beetlejuice on Halloween as it was the palest thing I could find on the high street. I’m gonna keep this handy for mixing with other foundations as a have a lot of dark ones at the moment that could do with toning down.

Ready to Wear Serum Foundation
Just like the Korres one there was a time I really enjoyed this. I think this might both be too dark as well (although will be a good match in summer, I did get rid of one super dark one) as now not being suitable for my oilier skin. So I’ll give it a few tries before deciding what to do with it.

The Body Shop Moisture Foundation
I don’t know why I bought a Moisture foundation last year when I have super oily skin, I’m pretty sure this has only been used once, but does look a perfect shade for me right now (which I have a real lack of!). If I don’t like this I will pass it on to my Mum as it will likely work a lot better for her and will be a good match for her summer complexion.

Kiko Frosted Look Lipstick
This is a lipstick like tip in a twist up crayon form. I remember I really liked this when I bought it and it looks like a pretty shade for spring so I’ve decided to give it another whirl, if not it’s going my Mum’s way.

NARS Velvet Matte Walkerie Lip Crayon
I actually reviewed this and I really enjoyed it – I think it’s fell out of my main collection because I’ve lost my lip crayon sharpener and I don’t want to run it through a liner one! I need to grab one but this is a lovely neutral lip that shouldn’t be going anywhere.

100% Pure Fruit Lip Glaze in Velveteen
I have a feeling this fell out of my main collection of lip products because it’s too long to fit in my lipstick tower. This is another product I reviewed and I found the formula really comfortable and the colour really pretty. It’s one of those colours that’s perfect for keeping in my handbag and not worrying that it doesn’t match any makeup that I tend to wear 90% of the time. So that’s where it’s going.

MAC Vamplify Glosses in Tuned in and Peer Pressure
Yep, you guessed it another two that I’ve reviewed. In terms of lipgloss formulas MAC Vamplify are my favourite, they have good gloss, high pigment without being sticky. I’m not sure whether these are still good as they looked a little separate in the tube when I got them out, but I will give them another wear to see. If not they’re heading to the Back to MAC pile.

MAC Wonder Woman Gloss in Athena’s Kiss
I can’t bare to get rid of this, I had a lipstick from this range that was my favourite ever from MAC (it’s never been re-released as far as I know) and it was my favourite of all time, and I lost it. I genuinely cried when I realised, I’d already lost it once and realised it had fell out of my pocket in a dressing room and drove all the way back (20 mile round trip) to get it. I kinda wanna do a throwback thursday on this Dazzle Glass. it has an obnoxiously big wand and is really hard to apply.

MAC Patent Polish in Clever
Another one I’ve reviewed here. This is another one which would be a great candidate to keep in my handbag, it’s a glossy balm like formula that’s semi-sheer and a lovely neutral shade, very comfortable. It actually reminds me of the 100% Pure lipstick in a slightly different shade.

Rimmel Apocalips x 5
Okay, these are the last ones I’ve reviewed! I really like these, but these are pretty old. I’m going to give them a last whirl and see if they’re still any good, if they do need tossing then I will probably repurchase a few of these shades. They’re somewhere between a liquid lipstick and a gloss.

MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow – My Dark Magic Eyeshadow
This was from the MAC Venomous Villains Collection and it’s barely been used. When I bought this I didn’t really know how to use, it pays off very dark on the eye and is kinda sheer, I can’t get rid of it, cause the collector in me can not get rid, but I feel like I’m now in a place where I can probably find a way to get this to work. Another candidate for a Beauty #TBT when I’ve worked out what’s the best way to get this to work.

Rimmel Purple Eye Duo
This is a product which should go, it’s the first piece of ‘proper’ makeup that I remember owning. It’s another one I’ve wanted to do a #TBT on for a while, however I have swatched this since I took these pictures and I can’t get anything on my finger touching this at all! I will try it with a brush but it may actually be time to say goodbye to.

Urban Decay Singles (see below)

Urban Decay Matte Singles – Narcotic and Chronic
I used to really love these little round pot single mattes. I don’t have many matte colour singles, in palettes or otherwise so these blue and green numbers might come in handy for some looks in future.

Urban Decay Metallic Finish – Fishnet and Sting
Fishnet, the purple used to belong to my sister and she passed it on. It’s a gorgeous bright violet that has an almost-duochrome quality to it. This is a colour now I’ve dug it out I want to play with. Sting I found in my local CCO years ago and it’s sitting unswatched after all this time. This is a gorgeous red/pink shade that has a subtle sheen to it, need to get this on the eye and give it a try!

So that’s what’s been salvaged from it’s bin destiny. I’m really looking forward to rediscovering some old favourites, as well as giving some things their first proper test. I’m hoping to find some gems that standout in this collection of stuff as well as taking the opportunity to declutter any more that don’t work for me.

I was planning on doing a Makeup Organisation post/Makeup Collections (it’s not as huge as you probably think). But I’m really not happy with how it works at the moment. When we move house I plan on getting more storage to be more organised (not those bloody Ikea Alex drawers though), getting a new dressing table and it doesn’t feel like it makes sense to do that now – so keep your eyes peeled for that sometime this year hopefully (sadly we’re on the hunt for a new house after losing the one we wanted to buy last week 🙁 ).

I swear by the Rimmel Foundation, actually have to repurchase it.

It’s not quite good enough coverage for me for every day, and this shade is way too pale for me so I will have to mix it with some darker shades!

Your lipgloss comment is too funny I just did a 300 lip product declutter and the entire time I was like “god I hate lip gloss why do I have all of these?!”

  3. February 21, 2018 / 10:19 am

I don’t mind lip gloss. I like it for when I’m around home or running quick errands not involving too much wind and outside elements. When I did my makeup declutter in January I rediscovered an Apocolips shade I hadn’t worn in a while and now I love it again, a brown-nude called Comet. So sorry you didn’t get the house you wanted, something more perfect will appear xx

I’m not a lipgloss fan either, I should go through my collection and declutter my liquid lipsticks since I’ve not really used any of them since the summer!

    • February 21, 2018 / 1:10 pm

I’ve been working on a huge liquid lipstick comparison since August and once I’ve finally finished it there will be a huge purge of liquid lipsticks, I have way too many I haven’t counted but my guess would be close to 100!

I have also noticed how one person doing a declutter of sorts whether it’s clothing, make-up or anything else, it always inspires others to do the same. I especially get the decluttering bug after watching wardrobe clear out videos, I find.
The last time I had a declutter in my make-up collection I also purged my glosses. They just weren’t getting the love they used to anymore since I am also not a gloss girl. Having said that, I also still haven’t quite been able to part with those Rimmel Apocolips. There’s just something about them!
That Nars lip crayon is such a beautiful neutral!
All the best for the house hunt! Maybe you lost that one you wanted because something even better is coming up. 🙂 x

haha that’s what everyone has been telling us – sadly I think it was on for not enough money and some parts of it won’t be able to be replicated (e.g 4 doors down from my Mum and Dad’s!)
I need to do a wardrobe clear out next, I got into a really bad phase last year of buying clothes because I didn’t have time to iron them (I know how ridiculous that sounds!), but now most of it is ironed I can’t close the doors on the wardrobe!

Ah, I can understand the disappointment there! I hope something wonderful comes your way. 🙂
Hahaha I had a good laugh at your story about buying clothes instead of doing the ironing. 😀 It is definitely efficient. Who has time for ironing anyway?
I don’t iron either. I got into the bad habit of using my hairdryer if something is creased and I run it over the fabric. 🙂

I need to declutter, but I’m so bad at it! I think I might need to give that Body Shop foundation a go. I’m super dry, so any foundation that’s moisturizing is up my alley!

such a good idea to go through & re-try some stuff! my makeup could use a bit of a spring clean, thanks for the inspo 🙌🏻

I’ve been doing a general declutter all over my house. I never have too much makeup but I cannot say the same for other sorts of things that accumulate everywhere 😊

I definitely need to do a declutter, as I’m the same as you. I have makeup that isn’t in my vanity, but I never use it. It’s in desperate need of a sort out. It looks like you’ve rediscovered so many amazing products. I remember when those Apoca lips were everywhere xx

I decluttered a few months ago, and I could not believe the stuff I had hiding! Now I have doubles of triples of a lot of things, lol.

  11. February 21, 2018 / 11:52 pm

I’m glad I was a positive influence! 😆 Thanks for the link back. 🙂
I actually like your way of decluttering – just toss them out in one go. I collected my pile for months and was very tempted to rescue several items from the purge pile!
It’s great that you were able to keep some items that you know you’ll be able to use up rather than toss away. At least your money didn’t go to waste on those items.

I had that The Body Shop Moisture Foundation and I found that it wasn’t long wearing – it would rub off quickly around my nose and chin.

MAC LE stuff in special packaging are so difficult to get rid of, I feel you! I completely missed the Wonder Woman collection – I think I was on vacation and all the items I wanted were sold out (especially that giant sized blush!) I do hope they re-release it but I’m not holding out hope.

What the heck happened to the UD eye shadow in Fishnet? Looks like a little kid got into that… 😛

    • February 22, 2018 / 7:01 am

When I started doing it I Just felt ruthless and like I wanted it gone immediately! I knew if I didn’t I would start justifying reasons to keep stuff!
Ahh I don’t hold out much hope for that foundation being great on ms oil slick over here, very likely it will go to my mum!
I don’t have that much Mac Le stuff that isn’t lipsticks and even then my collection isn’t huge so I didn’t feel too bad keepin the few pieces I did have. I found a foundation, liner and two paint pots which all went in the back to Mac pile.
I have no idea what happened to fishnet, I’m guessing it was dropped by my sister at some point it’s always been like that since she gave it to me! It is all pressed what’s left but just looks very messy!

I really like getting rid of things I don’t use anymore, I find it so liberating!

  13. February 22, 2018 / 1:22 pm

Fishnet is a great Urban Decay shade. I have it in the Deluxe Shadow Box and it’s why I am keeping that one around.

    • February 22, 2018 / 1:29 pm

I feel like I’ve probably used it at points but it’s not had enough love, moving it into my main dressing table should see it getting some more love!

      • February 22, 2018 / 1:31 pm

Yeah probably. I like keeping my makeup in one spot so I don’t lose track of what I have.

  14. March 1, 2018 / 8:36 pm

And I thought I had a ton of product in the house! Jeezzz what a stash! Next time himself gives out I’m sending him your way 🙂 xx
