Worth the Hype? Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Review

Worth the Hype? Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner Review

A few months ago I asked for some liquid eyeliner recommendations and one which kept cropping up was the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. It had big boots to fill, I became a huge fan of the Illamasqua Precision Ink liner but I’d wanted to try something to find something to compete with it. One of the things I really loved about the Illamasqua one was it’s longevity, for a liquid eyeliner that I used virtually every day it lasted well over a year, so whilst expensive at £21 – it was worth it in my eyes.

If you’ve been around my blog in the past year you’ll know that I’ve been becoming a bit of a Stila obsessive, it’s a range I’m fast falling in love with. I’m a good 3 months into using this now after I finished Precision Ink up in December – one thing I will say is that I don’t think this is going to have the same shelf life as my Illamasqua which was a liquid dip pot with felt nib compared to a felt nibbed pen. I think this will naturally dry out within around 6 months of using daily and at £14.50 it’s likely over time that it will work out more expensive than Illamasqua’s.

The packaging of this as usual is Stila’s sleek gold box which inside contains a simple black pen featuring their gold lettering. At first swatch I was already getting pretty dubious with this liner, if you see below that it’s not a complete smooth line, it sinks and settles into cracks in the skin. However first impression is that as long as you don’t have wrinkled eyelids if you’re applying this over an eyeshadow it doesn’t bleed and needs a shadow to soak up the moisture, by itself with no eyeshadow I find it bleeds a little and is more prone to transferring. The formula is quite watery and liquidy and benefits hugely from a powder to soak into.

The nib of this is long and tapered, it’s not as flexible as I’d been used to, but I soon got rid to the amount of flex in this brush, it’s easy to control, but does need a firm hand – you almost have to boss it about. The size of the nib makes it easy to create a nice thin line from the inner corner before tapering out to be wider towards the outer corner. The pigment of this is decent, over a normal eyeshadow I find this works really well, it settles and drys quickly before it has chance to transfer. I do find over more textured shadows or glitters such as the magnificent metals I find that I have to go over the line more than once as it soaks in too much and loses pigment as it does. It needs that second layer to create an obvious black line.

The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is incredibly long wearing and doesn’t budge all day – I’m not convinced it’s fully waterproof, especially as I’m currently trialling a MUFE liner which claims to be waterproof, on my hand that lasted three days of hand washing and showers. This one wouldn’t stand the test of time to that extent on my hand, but water-resistant yes, shower proof no, pool proof – maybe, lightly.

I don’t think this beats Illamasqua to the top spot, but it’s a very close second for me, I spotted a really good discount on a travel sized version of this eyeliner a few weeks ago, so much so I decided to pick up a back up of it – the real test as to whether I would repurchase it at full price is how long it lasts using it daily. I think the key is storing this upside down to make sure the nib is constantly getting a good flow of product.

This is available to buy priced at £14.50 from Beauty Bay and Cult Beauty.

The Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner has been featured, but not mentioned whilst I was testing it out in several posts over the past few months, so if you’d like to see some more examples of it in eye looks you can find it in the following posts;

I’ve actually never tried their liner before, it looks super pigmented

I’ve always watched to try this (although I’m equally as in love with the illamasqua one as you) but don’t think I’ll rush out to try it now! Xx

I like the nib of this liner. As I can see in the photo you can do fat and thin lines. Great review!

I have been considering buying this but I am glad I read this first. I hardly wear eyeshadow these days so if it bleeds a touch without it I am not going to be quite impressed for the price when I know Essence makes a waterproof eyeliner pen which is absolute magic. (despite it drying up fast but for the price it doesn’t really matter) Great post!

I haven’t tried much of Essence’s makeup, we had such a limited selection here. I will look out for it though, do you know which it is you like? There seem to be a few similar online! xx

It’s Essence’s Waterproof Eyeliner Pen. It doesn’t budge. I can rub my eyes, go swimming, anything and it doesn’t move. Like I said though, it does dry out fast. I think in about 2 months but it’s incredible!

Interesting, I don’t think I had that bleeding problem when I used it! I agree with you thigh, it’s not my favourite but it’s pretty darn good. Still need to try the Illamasqua – too bad the brand is not more readily available!

I feel like it’s got a bit better as it’s aged, but for the first few weeks it was very watery, it’s got thicker. Yeah it sucks that they pulled out of Canada!

I’ve recently fallen in love with some of the Stila products after not liking the first few I tried and having a break, but I haven’t tried their liquid eyeliner. I think my favourites are Kat Von D and Eyeko, I just love the pigmentation of them and tend to find the pen type ones work better for me. I will keep an eye out for this when I finish my current ones. I got two soap and glory ones for Christmas I like but they’re not my favourite and they last ages.

They have these occasionally in Springfields for cheaper than you can pick them up for online!
I really didn’t like the KVD one, I found it had really crap pigmentation, I’ve debated revisiting it as it was that terrible I wondered if I got a dodgy one!

      • February 16, 2018 / 12:38 pm

I’ve definitely started looking out more for Stila in discount shops since I’ve found how much I like the newer products I’ve tried. I wasn’t too sure on the KVD one to start with, it did the thing where it bleeds a bit which I really don’t like, but after being open and used a few times it improved a lot. The mini I got from a set last year is still going so if they work they seem good value for money but they are quite expensive at full size.

        • February 16, 2018 / 2:54 pm

I found on me it didn’t have good pigmentation to start with, and within 3 hours it was pretty much gone! I bought it in New York before KVD came to the Uk so there was nothing I could do with requesting a replacement at the time. But it’s put me off wanting to try it again.
Stila is definitely better now than it was 5 years ago

That doesn’t sound good, not sure if they’ve changed the formula or not but probably not worth trying it again when there are so many others out there now. Yeah, a lot of companies have improved a lot the past 5 or 6 years it seems. The couple of things I tried before were 2016 I think but they were just unlucky products to get probably.

Awesome review! I love all of the colours in this range too!

I’m yet to try any of the others, but I’d definitely consider getting some fun ones as it’s such an easy liner to work with!

Ive tried the Still liner and enjoy it but my favourite liner is the brush tip one from Kat Von D. Physicians formula has a brush tip one too and it’s amazing and more affordable.

    • February 17, 2018 / 11:58 am

My experience with tattoo liner was terrible! Id love to try more from Physicians formula, sadly we don’t get it here 😩

My favourite eyeliner is from Revolution at Superdrug. It’s very pigmented and it can be easily blended without smudging.
I like this liner that you have reviewed, I’ll definitely check it out.

I’m a die-hard fan of either Japanese branded pen liners (K-Palette or Heroine Make) or the Physician’s Formula one, but the Stila one would be my recommendation from Sephora. It lasts really well on me even with my one watery eye. I do agree, I wish the nib was a bit more flexible but overall this is a fantastic product.
