Huda Mauve Obsessions Palette

Huda Mauve Obsessions

Huda was a brand that I went from hearing nothing about, to hearing everything about within the space of about three weeks. So far I’ve managed to keep restrained from the brand but I did have a growing wishlist of items to try. My best blog girls, Lora, Soph and Molly treated me to the Huda Mauve Obsessions palette and a liquid lip from Huda’s range for my birthday and I’ve been giving the palette a really good whirl over the last week or so.

My gals knew that I had my eye on one of these Obsessions palettes, and without me telling them they actually picked the one I had my eye on the most. Huda Mauve Obsessions. This one is the least neutral out of the lot, but still very wearable. These palettes are small and perfect for travel, when you see them online you know they’re small, yet when you see them in person everyone is surprised at just how small they are.

The surprise I think comes from when you lift the lid on the palette you see that there is not a lot of wasted space at all. The size of this is similar to the MAC times nine palettes, but you get a lot more product for your money packed into one travel friendly sized package. This is cardboard and lightweight. I have a feeling that over time it’s not going to age well, especially if it gets frequently chucked into a makeup bag if you’re a jetsetter as it doesn’t feel quite robust.

These are priced at £25 each, which is at the top end for a palette of this size – anything more and they would be too expensive. Now I know some people have a problem with this palettes price due to the fact it’s made in China, and I kinda agree it’s a lot – but providing the quality is there I don’t really mind.

The palette has a mixture of finishes, featuring six matte shades, one duo chrome shade and two of her iconic foil formulas. Now with this palette I was signing up for mauve, but this to me when I opened it up my first thought was “that’s not really Mauve” – to me these shades are more cranberry hued and require more purple tones to bring it for mauve to me. Never the less I am a fan of cranberries so I wasn’t too disappointed and knew it would likely be a palette that I would still get a lot of wear from.

Mauve Obsessions Swatches

Huda Mauve Obsessions Swatches

All of these are just one swipe/swatch across as always – none of those layered up swatches here, these are true to life!

Row 1

Shade 1 – MATTE – In the pan this looks more terracotta than it pays off on the skin, it definitely edges towards a deeper brown that has a red undertone. Good pigmentation, but a little difficult to blend

Shade 2 – FOIL – This is a peachy foil shade that has a hint of soft duo chrome pink in the pan, which doesn’t really translate to swatches or the eye. Good pigmentation, doesn’t blend well with a  brush.

Shade 3 – FOIL – In the pan this looks like a rose gold shade, but it pays off more champagne toned on the skin. Good Pigmentation, doesn’t blend well with a brush.

Row 2

Shade 4 -FOIL – This is an odd shade, swatched against nothing else it looks more pinky – maybe with a slight coral undertone, but when it’s blended and placed against other colours it looks more red. Good pigment, but like the other foils doesn’t play well with a brush.

Shade 5 – MATTE – This palette’s transition shade, quite a cool coffee brown, the pigmentation of this is quite light and requires building to get it fully opaque. Again, a little powdery – but workable and buildable.

Shade 6 – MATTE – This shade is a little patchy for me, it’s a pretty red-terracotta shade that’s good for mixing with other colours, by itself it skips and doesn’t blend very well which is a shame as it would be a pretty colour through the crease in place of the more neutral shade 5 if you wanted something more amped up.

Row 3

Shade 7 – MATTE – In the pan I would argue that this is the most mauvey shade, but swatched it does pay off more brown with a mauve/purple undertone when it’s placed next to the reds, next to shade 3 the purple tones in it pull out way more. Okay pigmentation, a little powdery and difficult to blend, but not impossible.

Shade 8 – MATTE – A very opaque matte cream shade – a little powdery in texture but good for setting the eye after primer if required, and good for blending with other colours to tone down other shades. I actually like mixing this with shade 5 for the crease to make it blend a bit easier.

Shade 9 – MATTE – This is one of my favourite shades in the palette, it’s a gorgeous deep cherry red, and looks gorgeous in the outer corner or for deepening the crease, however it’s hard work to smoothly blend IMO.

I’ll admit that it’s taken me a while to get used to the Huda Mauve Obsessions palette, but at first I really wasn’t too impressed. The Mattes in this palette whist they have pigment are incredibly soft and powdery, when you attempt to blend them away they blend away too much and start to go patchy, even with a good primer they’re hard to work with. I find that I’m applying mattes a lot more heavily pigment wise than I normally would do, as I’m not able to blend them properly as they disappear. I’m not particularly in love with any of the looks I’ve created for that reason.

The duo chrome shade 2 is lovely but it lacks pigmentation and punch, the two foils are very flaky and dry, they don’t pick up fantastically with a brush and require a glitter glue primer otherwise when you blend they just buff away to a soft metallic. Over glitter glue they are a lot more foily and eye-catching, The pictures below are from look further down in the post.

I’ve got three looks below, and the first one in particular I think is a good indication of seeing the issues with blending that come from this palette.

Looks using the Huda Mauve Obsessions Palette

Look 1 – Cranberries on Ice
Shades Used 1, 4, 5, 7, 9

I started with adding 5 through the socket and building shade 1 and shade 9 together through to the upper socket. I then started blending shade 7 through the outer corner through the crease slightly and then smudging out shade 7 under the bottom lashes. I then packed on shade 4 over the lid (on this look you can see the difference between using a glitter glue for the primers and just blending in, the effect difference is quite something. It does also show however how badly shade 4  blends when used with a glue though.

Look 2 – Warm Peaches
Shades Used; 5, 8, 7, 2

First I blended shade 5 and 8 through the crease, before placing shade 7 through the outer corner and building through to the crease stopping around the centre. I then placed Shade 2 all over the lid, blended over shade 7, then deepened up the outer crease slightly more with touching up with a bit more of shade 7.

Look 3 – Champagne Plum
Shades Used: 3, 5, 7 & 8

I went in all over the lid up to the brow bone with shade 8 to mattify the eye, blending shade 5 through the upper socket very lightly to create just a a touch of depth and blend. I then went in heavy with shade 7 through the crease to the outer corner and then dragging underneath the lash line. I then placed Too Faced Glitter Glue over the inner corner to the centre of the lid and packed on shade 3 with my finger, grabbing a brush, blending out to soften, then packaging more pigment on the centre of my lid with my finger.

Huda Mauve Obsessions eye look

You never want to say you don’t like a gift, so it’s hard saying that this birthday present was a bit of a dud – but my gals are bloggers too, and they’ll appreciate the honest review… I hope. Equally Huda Mauve Obsessions was the only palette on my list to get this year. I don’t hate it, but I wouldn’t rebuy it. It’s likely to be one which is kept more so for travel as it is the perfect size, and can do quite a lot of different styles of looks with the shade range. The biggest disappointment for me… this is not mauve.

The Huda palettes are available to buy from Cult Beauty and are priced at £25.00 each.

Have you tried these mini Huda Palettes?

The three looks you created are all different from each other so there is versatility 🙂 Shame about some of the shades being powdery/patchy 🙁

    • February 13, 2018 / 12:26 pm

There is a lot of versatility in the shades, I don’t think that you’d think that these three looks all would have come from one 9 pan palette!

This palette is so pretty, it swatches beautifully and I love the looks you created with it! x

I actually like this palette more than I thought I would. I picked it up on a whim right after Christmas. I like layering one lighter foil shades over the darker one for a unique color.

OMG the shades are so beautiful!

  5. February 13, 2018 / 8:28 am

Omg I can’t believe you hate it…lol jokes its just such a shame it isn’t good to work with! Sounds like a lot of hard work! Very intruiged to photograph mine and start using it now! Xxx

    • February 13, 2018 / 12:23 pm

Haha, can’t believe you bought me this shit! 😛 Yes get on it girl, need to hear whether the rest are as difficult to work with as this one is!

This palette looks so beautiful! It’s a pity you had to put in so much work to get it to work. It’s good you found a way to make it work though. I love the effect you created with your make-up looks. 🙂

  7. February 13, 2018 / 8:45 am

Wonderful review! I just bought this palette and can’t wait to review it

  8. February 13, 2018 / 9:15 am

So much effort has gone into this post! Great review 🙂 x

  9. February 13, 2018 / 11:02 am

I’m surprised you didn’t like it as of course Huda is so raved about but the shades do look beautiful, and so do the looks you created with them! X

    • February 13, 2018 / 11:04 am

It’s just the blendability and pigmentation of some of the shades that let it down. It does create nice looks but it’s hard work, There’s other palettes which are much easier to work with IMO!

  10. February 13, 2018 / 11:17 am

Look three is definitely my favourite. A lot of people felt like $35 for the size (CAD) was too high so I wasn’t surprised to see you mention it.

      • February 13, 2018 / 11:32 am

Not surprised I wrote a long post about why I don’t buy from this brand because it just makes me go 🤷🏻‍♀️

  11. February 13, 2018 / 12:38 pm

This is one of the palettes I was considering putting on my to buy list this year but I think I’ll pass. They definitely aren’t what I’d call mauve either, a bit too red for that for me, but still pretty colours. It seems like a nice versatile palette but disappointing it doesn’t work and blend as well as you’d hope for the price. They look like they have great pigmentation but the blending would put me off actually getting one.

    • February 13, 2018 / 2:10 pm

It is very red for a mauve, maybe mauve has a different meaning in Dubai! I definitely think there’s better things to spend money on than this, unless you’re a regular traveller and like having something small that can be very diverse and be willing to work with the blending issues!

      • February 13, 2018 / 2:25 pm

Yeah, there are a few other palettes I’m looking at so I’ll skip this one. I have enough travel sized palettes already but will probably get a more red based larger palette some time as I’ve not really got many reds and they look so pretty.

  12. February 13, 2018 / 2:46 pm

I’m one of those that don’t really want to buy this because it’s made in China, but the colours DO look really appealing, and out of all of the Obsessions palettes, I think I would have bought this one. It’s a shame it’s not really mauve-themed, but the colour scheme still nice!

Nevertheless, you created some really pretty eye looks despite the quality issues – you wouldn’t be able to tell they were hard to work with. Look 3 is my favourite! 🙂 The foils look like they swatch nicely, it’s too bad they don’t work the same on the eyes.

  13. February 13, 2018 / 3:03 pm

Great review and I love the looks that you created. I have this and really like it, but I find I reach for my Modern Renaissance more when I’m looking to wear these shades.

  14. February 13, 2018 / 3:34 pm

This palette is so gorgeous! I just wish they were a little more affordable. So pigmented though xx

Aaw it’s a shame you didn’t love it as you created lovely looks! The foils in the first Huda palette were awful but I liked the mattes and shimmers in the first and second palette. Do you think the quality could be different as the Obsessions palettes are made in China but I don’t think the others are? Xx

  16. February 13, 2018 / 6:00 pm

The swatch for Shade 5 looks kind of lame but I can see how it would be a good transitional colour. That Shade 8 matte cream shade looks stellar though! Would make such a great all over lid wash or highlight.
My favourite of the 3 looks you showcased is #3 – really like that halo effect on the lids.
I’m a broken record when it comes to these Huda mini palettes – made in China and they charge so much? Nope, not for me!

    • February 13, 2018 / 9:36 pm

Exactly! and Anastasia Beverly Hills too! Their brow stuff and some glow kits are made in China. I never buy from brands like that.

It’s a pity that this palette doesn’t perform. Such a bummer when a gift from friends don’t work out. Better luck next time, Rachel~ They’re bloggers too, so I’m certain that they’d understand your review.

      • February 16, 2018 / 12:06 pm

yeah I can’t bring myself to get into ABH! I look at everything and think it’s so expensive and I don’t feel inspired by the line!

    • February 16, 2018 / 12:05 pm

Swatch 5 is lame, it could do with more punch, I’d rather tone it down than keep layering and layering, but atlest that’s an option!
Shade 8 is a really good cream!
3 is my favourite look too!
I agree with you, I could cope with £25 if it was incredible, there’s a lot of product in here compared to similar sized palettes, but it’s not it should at least be £10 cheaper, the quality isn’t there!

  17. February 13, 2018 / 8:10 pm

The palette is really beautiful and I’m so happy that I’ve got my hands on it! I love all the shades, but tbf, I’m mostly impressed with the white one! Lovely looks ^^

I hate to be the one to tell you this but your content has been stolen here. They did it to me twice now, the hosting company hasn’t done anything for my complaints perhaps there is strength in numbers. I’ve recorded the links to your content for them if they want it later. I just thought I should let you know. Contact me via email for info if you want to get in touch with them. Sorry, Allison.

Loving the looks that you created with this pretty little palette! I never thought to compare the size to a MAC 9 pan palette but wow, it’s acrually very impressive that there is more product in this tiny palette. Love the size though, it really is perfect to travel with!

It is a really good travel palette and it’s good you get more product in than a mac times nine too. I’d just recommend a different colour way, I’m hearing less blend problems with those!

You did some great looks with this. I’m personally eyeing up the electric. I am hoping to branch out into more bright shades in 2018.

    • February 16, 2018 / 12:02 pm

Thank you, The electric one is the perfect size I think for branching out into brights, enough colours to play with without being huge! xx

  22. February 14, 2018 / 9:46 pm

Great post! This looks like my dream palette! I need to buy one ❤️

      • February 16, 2018 / 12:10 pm

Yeah, I have a few eyeshadows like this, I find using my ring finger to start the blending helps and then move to the brush. These colours look beautiful, its a shame most foil pigments seem not to look so nice with brushes as they are my favourite! x

  23. February 16, 2018 / 11:12 am

Wow! These look so good and so different to most colours I own, I always tend to go for golds and bronzes so I definitely need to try some of these shades. Great post!

  24. February 19, 2018 / 5:24 pm

Hmm, I really wanted the palette for its colours. I seem to love colours that make you look like someone punched you for some reason. However, these colours are not as readily available. Your looks are really nice actually but I haven’t other ones that you’ve made so I cannot really judge. Since you are not happy and since I know I won’t be able to create some that look even that nice as I lack experience I will probably just pass this pallet and seek another one that might be more suitable.
