2017 Beauty Favourites

2017 Beauty Favourites

I thought it would be good to pick out some products that over the year have impressed me (and tomorrow the ones which did not) over the course of the year. Bar one product over these two posts these are all makeup products – for skincare I felt like they were products that were still favourites from last year and have been spoke about a lot in empties and hauls throughout the year (e.g the Mario Badescu Seaweed Cleansing Soap). For the most part I tried to keep my 2017 Beauty Favourites to new discoveries for me for the year. There’s also no lip products in this post at all, there’s very little on that front I’ve stayed loyal too due to working on a liquid lipstick comparison post since August!

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Foundation
The inclusion of this may come as a surprise – this foundation when used daily for about 3/4 weeks broke me out terribly. When I say terribly I’m still battling with the aftermath of the scarring breakout, it’s the most painful I’ve had in my life. Yet it’s still here in my favourites.

I now use this foundation on special occasions only – and limit it to no more than 2 days a week. The finish of this foundation flawless, it feels weightless on the skin, blends beautifully, lasts really well and doesn’t break down on mu t-zone with oil etc. I wore this for three days straight over Christmas and felt like I had to give my skin a breather but it did end up reminding me just how much I adore the finish.

Colourpop Glitterati Supershock Shadow
If I was picking a brand of the year, it would  – probably have to be Colourpop. 2017 was the first year that I had ordered them, and bar one product I’ve pretty much loved – or atleast been able to appreciate everything I’ve tried. An honorable mention has to go to the Yes Please palette, but if I’m thinking about one product that has been used a lot since I first got my hands on it it’s this. It’s a gorgeous shade that sits somewhere between a gold and a silver, as well as being somewhere between a glitter and a shimmer (don’t be fooled by the name it’s not really a full blown glitter). It’s really pretty all over the lid as well as in the inner corner.

L’Oreal Paradise Extatic Mascara
Okay, I’ll admit it – I’m usually pretty snobby when it comes to mascara. Lancome, YSL and Too Faced are some of my preferred brands when it comes to mascara. Whilst I try to find alternatives from the high-street most of the time they leave me wanting more. This mascara (known as Lash Paradise in the US, a much better name than this horribly spelt product!) caused quite the stir when it launched in the US in June, and while I not so patiently waited for it to arrive to our shores here eventually appearing in stores in August. I grabbed the first tube I saw and it’s been the one I reached for as my favourite until it dried up.

I have naturally quite long lashes and what I want most from a mascara is volume, I’m not to bothered if the effect is a clumpier lash or more separated but this one is a triple hitter, volume, separation and length all in one. It has quite a dry formula from when it’s first opened.

The Tarte Tarteist mascara came a close second to this and out of the two, I probably out the two prefer the Tarte one, but the reason I chose the L’Oreal one is that it takes a lot for a drugstore/highstreet mascara to impress me as I’m a high end mascara girl at heart, but this is one I’d consider rebuying.

MAC Oil Control Lotion
I almost forgot about including this which would have been a huge mistake! I discovered this back when I had my makeup trial for my wedding, and when it was used again on my wedding day, that became the convince for me to try it. Over summer when the weather was warmer (only moderately though, it is the UK after all) is when i saw the biggest difference with this. it feels really lightweight on the skin and really helps keep oil at bay through the day. I’m on my second tube of this now, and I can’t see me being without it unless something better comes along.

Illamasqua Precision Ink Liner
I started this right at the tail end of last year, and it wasn’t until I was 6 months into using it, and it was still as good as new that I appreciated just how good it was. This is an ultra pigmented liner, easy to control and lasts all day long without any smudging or budging. I’ve recently had to admit that this after over a year there wasn’t much liquid in it. I’ve swapped over to a new one to try, and whilst I like it – I am missing this.

Stila Magnificent Metals Shadows
The earliest launch in 2017 out of the three, which has become a firm favourite. Glitter when it comes to eyeshadows has always been something in the past which has been a bit awkward for people who aren’t pro make up artists, the magnificent metals made it easy, even for the most novice. It’ll come as no surprise for many that this is my number one product of the year after I dedicated a post to them at the start of December.

Urban Decay Primer Potion
The only item on the two list which wasn’t fresh discovery for me last year. I put this as a product I was going to try and use up this year and as I did I re-fell in love with it all over again. This is truly the best of the best for me when it comes to primers and it’s really close to coming to the end and is starting to ooze out of the sides, I imagine in the next week or two this will end up in my empties. I have one eye primer left in my collection and once that’s gone this will be the one I repurchase immediately. I almost bought a new one with my Christmas money, but I decided to hold off and be good and finish my other one off.

I’m embarking on a no-buy for the month of January, and fingers crossed February, I have a huge pile of new makeup from Christmas – and an overflowing drawer of foundations I need to try and get through – but if there’s any favourites you had in 2017 that you think I need to try please leave them in the comments for me to add to my list to check out.

Happy new year lovely! I must pick up a Magnificent Metals Shadow or two, they look so fab! Still gutted I can’t get my hands on that MAC Oil control cream as I reckon that would be a serious holy grail product here in Bangkok, it’s on my list for the summer haul already!! x

Happy new year to you too!
Yes, definitely grab a tube or two of it (remember the sized to go are better value than the big full size with pump!), it was a saviour for me in very humid Kuala Lumpur!
      xx

Glitterati is gorgeous, I will have to try Colourpop sometime! The MAC Oil Control Lotion sounds good, would it suit different skin types? x

    • January 4, 2018 / 10:17 am

Yes it’s a very thin lotion so I use it as a moisturiser as well as a primer – it’s not drying at all! I don’t know what magic it’s working but overall my skin is less oily now even when I don’t wear makeup!

That’s sold me, I want to try it!

Haha I am not surprised – If I’m stila queen, you are colourpop queen!
I only just remembered because I picked it out of my empties the day before I started prepping this post, so the Illasmasqua liner and the mascara got fished out!
      xxxx

Yes! These are my favourite kinds of post! Love seeing what other people have been loving over the year xox

I knew Stila had to be in here somewhere! The Magnificent Metals are defo one of my top products this year. Great faves😊 x

That Fenty foundation is so polarizing! I actually can’t believe you included it when it caused you to break out so badly. If that happened to me, it would be tossed asap! 😛

I’m wearing the L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara today. It does give fantastic volume! It does flake slightly on me so I have to apply a mascara top coat over it.

I’m still so salty about Illamasqua exiting North America! I think I have to make a trip to the UK just to stock up… it’s so expensive to buy it online.

Hehe, not surprised about the Stila Magnificent Metals Shadows! You’re like the spokesperson for it. 😉

    • January 4, 2018 / 7:23 pm

It is rumoured that lash paradise and lash extatic are the same brush but slightly different formulas I know people who’ve had both and not liked one over the other!

It was really close whether I put it in my favourites or disappointments, but finish and longevity wise it deserves so much credit!

Haha yes come for an illamasqua splurge, we can find a store together as living in the middle of no where there are none near me!

And yes definitely the unofficial spokesperson for the magnificent metals, through my beauty bay affiliate stuff I can see what people have bought through me and they’ve had about 80 of them sold through my affiliate link 😂😂 someone bought 3 yesterday!

that urban decay eyeshadow primer potion is so good, only one I’ve ever used!

The tarteist mascara is my favorite too! I’ll have to give the L’oreal a go. I also love the eye primer! Reminds me I need a tube 🙂
