Face Mask Friday #49 – Mentolatum Pore Refining Beauty Mask

Mentolatum Pore Refining Beauty Mask

If there’s one problem with my complexion more than any other over the past few weeks that’s enlarged pores, I don’t 100% know whether it’s down to the sudden cold snap of weather or the fact I’ve ditched my holy grail cleanser whilst I finished off a couple of others lingering in my shower but either way I’ve noticed that my foundation really seems to be settling – so when I saw the Mentolatum Pore Refining Beauty Mask lingering in my mask box it had to be worth a try.

Mentholatum (catchy name) is not a brand I really knew anything about but it turns out its the parent company behind brand names like Deep Heat, and whilst those branded products are available here, the sheet masks etc are not available here and as far as I can tell aren’t really outside of Asia. I picked it up whilst in Bali at an extremely overpriced shopping centre that was a tourist trap. I visited to pick up something for some bites  I had and naturally ended up grabbing something – thanks to the notes I made in my honeymoon haul, it was around the £2 mark and was the cheapest non-home brand mask I could find in the pharmacy (Guardian).

It’s funny re-reading my description of this in my haul as my thoughts were the same when I fished it out of the box, it’s described as ‘maintaining skin texture’ – which seems odd right? Maintain, not improve. As well as aiding in oil control and ‘refine pore treat’ – what ever that means. Either way the two core listed ingredients of Witch Hazel and AcHA sounded really quite promising in helping it do what I wanted it to do as long as just being good active ingredients for oily skin.

The packaging of this is pretty simple and very non-fancy looking, I was drawn to this mask because it was a two part sheet mask which aren’t that easy to come across here – although next weeks ‘Golden Anniversary’ Face Mask Friday does feature another.

The sheet felt like a smooth but quite rigid feeling tissue. for a two part mask you would think that you could make this fit the shape of your face quite well, but for me it was an odd one. The eye holes felt very small (yes I was still wearing eyeshadow and mascara as I was testing longevity for a future review, but my face was clean!).. The cheek area was instant on budging up on the sides and it made it feel a little on the uncomfortable side.

After leaving the Mentolatum Pore Refining Beauty Mask for around 20 minutes the mask started to dry and out and I lifted off, then massaging in the excess serum into the skin. What was clear within minutes was that it felt really sticky and still after an hour or so it still hadn’t fully lost the tacky feeling and by that point I couldn’t put up with it any longer and had to wash my face once my skin had dried down everything felt uncomfortably tight and dry, not in a good “good bye oil dry” but in a dehydrated “maybe I need a moisturising mask” dry. Also it didn’t help with the thing I was trying to tackle most – my pores didn’t look any visibly different. I was hoping to see over the next few days maybe a positive effect of the mask, like maybe that dryness did help oil production, but for days it just felt Sahara levels of dry.

I’m glad I only picked up one from this brand as I know I was tempted to try out some others, but they tended to be geared towards the Asian market, for example Whitening.

Let me know if you can get Mentholatum masks where you are in the comments, and any pore refining masks that work wouldn’t go amiss!

I am honestly not a fan of sheet masks. I feel like so many of them have this problem and I hate having that sticky feeling left on my skin! I much prefer a nice mud or mineral mask that washes off after and leaves your skin feeling clean.

I’ve never tried any kind of masks before, since I’m skeptical about how they’re going to make my skin feel, seeing as I have sensitive skin. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I feel a tad more confident.
