New Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment Review

New Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment Review

I just had to double check that this was the case, but welcome to my first ever lush product review on my blog. I know. I’m almost four years into the world of beauty blogging, nearly at 1000 posts published, and I’ve not done a Lush product review. I feel like I’ve been a beauty blogging fraud until now. Well lets turn things around with having a look at the new Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment.

The reason I’ve never reviewed anything from Lush is quite simple really, I’m not a bath girl and I think most of the hype around Lush products is their Bath Bombs. I did a haul two Christmas’ ago of some Christmas Bath products in an attempt to make myself a bath person and I’ve thrown the majority of them away in the past week, I think I’ve used two in two years. I know some people adore the smell of lush but the sickly sweet scent is not my favourite and in general I find the store’s selection both a bit on the overwhelming and underwhelming simultaneously.

There’s a lot on offer but I just don’t fancy trying that much of it. I’m constantly recommended things by my friends, both blogger and non blogger and the response in me when I go to check out the products is shrugged shoulders. I think both the packaging of Lush’s products is a bit ugly, which is odd because their actual products are so pretty and they’re on the pricier side for something I feel like I’m taking a gamble on, and not being that bothered in the first place by.

A few weeks ago I was invited to an event with my local shopping centre and was challenged to splurge on items for a pampering girls night theme. Despite me not being a Lushie, I couldn’t have that theme and not go to Lush could I? I went in and told them about my theme, said I didn’t want a bath bomb, I knew I wanted to get a golden handshake (a hand mask) and asked for some other suggestions a Hot Oil Treatment was what I ended up choosing alongside it. They have a few different ones and I opted for the one called ‘New’ from the advice of the sales assistant.

Lush have a variety of hair oils in this form all do something slightly different, this one – New, promotes hair growth, strength and adds shine. It also comes with the claim of that the effects can last up to six weeks which seems… well, bonkers. They’re hard set sticks that you mix in a bowl or mug with hot water. The stick gives the basic instructions on the stick, boil the kettle, mix water using the stick to stir in a mug, apply, wait 20 minutes then rinse.

One thing that was a bit annoying with this was that it doesn’t give instruction on how much hot water to use, and neither does the sticker on the brown bag it came in. I started small and just kept adding a little at a time as I didn’t want to end up making it too watery, it got to a point though where it stopped changing in texture, but it never got to the whipped up texture that I was shown made up in store. Lush, a little guidance of how many ml needed would be fantastic, going onto the website I saw that I definitely did not use enough water and I basically needed to 3/4 fill a mug (not something that the little icon matches up to!).

I had mixed feelings on whether I should post this review or not given it was clear just how wrong I’d gone with the mix while writing it up, however money had been spent on it, pictures had been taken. Add to that it really wasn’t clear until I was writing this up and having to go onto Lush’s website and watch a video to find out I’d done it incorrectly, which is really part of the review – this product comes with piss-poor instructions. So take my review with a pinch of salt, but what I came to the conclusion of was that it was likely to have the same effects but it was going to have been more concentrated texture and not spread  as far.

I would recommend doing this in a bowl rather than a mug, or if in a mug the smallest mug you can find as when it comes to the application and scooping the product out it wasn’t very easy with my Instagram friendly copper Moscow Mule mugs, but a bowl would have been a lot easier to get it out.

Mixing it up the scent of this ends up filling the room, this is not anywhere near what I normally think of when it comes to Lush scents, it’s such a warm and spicy fragrance. I just dug out a Christmas candle from last year and it reminded me of that straight away, with cinnamon and clove immediately jumping out it’s perfect for this time of year.

I first started trying to scoop out the product and use with the stick, but I ended up having to go in with my hands to help spread it, so it just made things longer that it needed to be. The Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment mix’s texture was like a thick waxy cream, looking at the stick it almost looks like someone could be applying this to wax the skin. The feeling of it whilst wasn’t unpleasant didn’t make it very easy to spread through the hair and I only just had enough to cover my ends and some of my roots. If I’d made it up to it’s non-existant instructions I imagine that I could have covered my whole head and maybe had a little spare. If you have shorter or thinner hair you could probably manage to two uses out of it.

I ended up leaving it on my hair for closer to three hours in the end, our water went off at home temporarily and I was unable to wash it out quicker. But given these are £6.95 for a single use product, I managed to make sure my hair got it’s money out of it.

After roughly 15 minutes on the hair the texture started to dry out and feel more ‘set’, I didn’t notice that it seemed to change any more after an hour, it’s hard to know whether this would have happened with a more watery mix or not, but it became clear when washing it out I could still feel it in my hair, three shampoos later it was like trying to remove wax from the hair, I had to get the shower as hot as I could bear it to be, when I got out the shower and let my hair air dry I had areas of crustiness and I had to rinse my hair again. I’m going to hope that was purely down to the mix.

Once my hair was two washes and six shampoo rounds down the first thing I noticed when my hair was dry was that it still smelt like a Christmas bakery and that there was still some residue in my roots, once I’d brushed through it a few times it removed the semi crispy feeling, but it took the third wash a few days later before I could feel that it had properly gone.

I happened to have ran out of conditioner at the same point that I used the Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment which made seeing what really did for my hair easy. My hair is dry and very knot prone and the thought of trying to get a brush through it normally would normally be virtually unthinkable and very painful. My brush glided through my hair with ease and my hair looked very soft and shiny once used. I let my hair air dry for the first few washes after the hot oil treatment and found that it gave my hair a lot of natural texture. I have quite wavy hair which can sometimes look really nice, sometimes look frizzy, and this smoothed everything down without making it straight and limp, the ends felt very smooth and nourished like I’d applied a heavy dose of oil, without the greasy side-effects that might come along with it. It was applied to my hair two weeks ago now and I’d say the effects are all but gone.

I’d try the Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment again as I’d be interested to see how the effects of these differ with the right consistency, but my tips would be if you’re going to try them watch the videos on the lush website first, they should show you a video of them as you check out so people know how to use these and how much to use, or just update that bloody stick with a bit more guidance.

Have you tried the Lush Hot Oil Hair Treatment?

Ughh the six washes part sounds exhausting 😣I have very long hair and even normal washing leaves my arms achy I can’t imaging applying this and attempting to wash it out 💦. I’m on the fence about trying it 🤔. Loved your pics though 😘 and your review very detailed.

There was nothing worse than getting out the shower mid-morning letting my hair dry and realising I had to get back in later on in the day!
Thank you – it might be worth a go just make sure you mix enough water in, hopefully it will wash out a lot easier if so!

I didn’t know they had these! I want one so bad!

This seems like the biggest faff ever – I like a conditioner I can sling in and go, don’t think I could be bothered with this!
I agree with you about Lush as a general rule, I like going in and speaking with their staff as they’re always so well informed and helpful, but I feel super overwhelmed in store so normally dash in for my usual (the comforter bath thingy or snow fairy shower gel) and dash back out again!

Surprisingly I had the same problem with the consistency when I tried a LUSH hair mask too. I like the sound of this one though, so maybe I’ll tempt fate and try again.

I don’t know why so many people have so much trouble with these hot oil treatments. The instructions are pretty clear. Not to mention, there’s videos on YouTube that show you exactly what to do. You just put the treatment in a medium sized mug, pour boiling water in (about half, or enough to cover the treatment by a few cm) Then you just stir it until it looks whipped. If it still looks like paste you just add a little more water and keep stirring until it looks whipped like its supposed to. It’s not rocket science. You don’t need to over-think it. It’s a good product, lush dosn’t deserve bad reviews just because some people can’t follow simple instructions.

Sorry but what simple instructions are you talking about?

The only instructions that came with this product are what’s on the stick, yes put it in a mug – but what size mug? It doesn’t tell you how much water to use or how far to top it up. I did cover the wax by a few cm for reference and it was no where near enough, it needed to be filled to the top… not something the illustration on the stick appears to demonstrate.

You shouldn’t have to go away and research how to use the product, it’s a simple instruction that could have been included. Not everyone watches YouTube and not even the instructions on their own website are clear.

I’ve also just got a review going up of golden handshake this week and the issue was exactly the same with that, if I hadn’t of had the problem with this I wouldn’t have known that I needed to fill the whole mug (not a few cm) with water.

For the record I didn’t say this was a bad product, I said that the instructions needed to be clearer. I think given the shitty instructions it actually got a better review than it maybe deserved.
