Makeup Obsession Highlight & Strobe Palette

We all know that I’m quite a fan of the TAM beauty umbrella of brands (despite all the recent drama!) – but the Makeup Obsession launch was one which initially fell a bit on deaf ears for me. Whilst I saw lots of beautiful swatches of eyeshadows online, and even tested them in stores I couldn’t help feel like the shades felt like I already had them covered in my collection, and the need for me to pick any of them up was not huge. But then I found the highlighters and it became a different story.

If you’re unaware the Makeup Obsession range is the latest from TAM beauty which allows you to pick a palette (which are either 6 or 12 in size, and come in various different shades), if you’re in a Boots they can also personalise the palettes for you. I chose the smallest 6 palette in white, as it would be one which stood out in my drawer in a sea of black and pink palettes it’s one I can find easily. The pans come in individual plastic pans which you pop out and place into your palette, or alternively you can keep them by themselves. The first 4 of these I bouhght I stupidly threw the casings away, but I’ve now kept one that if I want to pop one out for travel I can do. The range covers Shadows, Lip, Brow Powders, Blushes, Highlights, Strobe Creams and Contour powders.

The pans are a bit of a weird size, as an eyeshadow size they feel giant, and as a blush or highlight they feel slightly on the small size, however the fact I can now pop one of these out for a night away makes me more on board with their size. The palette feels slightly clunky to me and although I know there’s no way to get around it with the design, I can’t help but think that if this was a magnetic palette and magnetic pans how much space would be saved. The packaging however is nice and sturdy and comes with a nice full sized mirror in the lid. The palettes are between £6 and £8 each, and the pans range in price depending on the product – shadows are £2 each, highlights/strobe creams £3, contour £3, brows £2, lips £2 and blush £3.

The Makeup Obsession pans are tiny, there’s just 2g of product in there which for a highlight is miniature. On one hand it makes sense, they fit into a click system for eyeshadows, blushes etc – but it doesn’t other the best value for money when you take into consideration that other Tam Beauty highlights are 7.5g, and tend to also be around the £3 mark, with this you’re paying for flexibility. One thing I will say is that once you’ve added in 6 pans which at highlight cost is £18 – plus the palette cost – it’s a £24 palette – I’m not sure that this feels like a £24 palette to me.

One thing I do like is that you can see the names of the shades when you flip over the shades. The idea of the palette is slightly flawed to me for travel if you don’t have the palette full as things can get in through the gaps at the bottom, a clear acrylic bottom would have worked really well to stop this IMO. I could be tempted my some eyeshadows if they had a smaller 3/4 palette, but as a travel palette I’d be able to fit in a similar sized pre-made palette which has more shades in it, that makes it unappealing to me as an eyeshadow layout. Whilst the beauty of this is that you can mix a blush, shadow, highlight & 3 shadows for travel, I know the idea of mixing all those things just doesn’t appeal, especially when it comes to brown eyeshadows being near a strobe cream!

First Row: Pop, Precious & Space for a new one Second Row: Lightning, Bare, Moon

I currently have 5 shades in my palette 4 powder highlights, and one strobe cream, I still have one to decide and I’m actually on the look out for a matte highlight the next time I’m near a Boots with a counter. One of the things I like about these highlights is that they’re transitional for me, and I’ll often use them as an inner corner highlight for the eyes as well as on the cheeks. These are not the most neutral shades of highlight, because… I have plenty of those and a smaller sized lilac toned highlighter is better placed in my collection as something I use infrequently and a full normal sized version of would take me forever and a day to hit pan on.

Top to Bottom Swatches

Precious – Strobe Cream – An Icy white with a pale blue shift, a little hard to blend, but looks gorgeous once you have it on

Moon – Highlight – A lilac toned highlight which appears more pinky once on the skin, great as an inner corner highlight with purple eyeshadow looks. Quite a frosty finish, but looks pretty on the skin and isn’t too much colour for it to look odd.

Bare – Highlight – the most neutral of the bunch quite a soft highlight that under some lights reminds me of MAC Soft and Gentle (see swatch at the end!)

Lightning – Highlight – Bright White slightly frosty but gorgeous, has a very faint gold shimmer.

Pop – Highlight – An unusual bright white with an icy green flash, I love this it’s really unusual and works really well as an eyeshadow too.

Bare was the first one I bought and after a few months I added to my collection. Bare really reminded me of slightly softer MAC’s Soft and Gentle under certain lights although the cost of the two compared as grams makes them not vastly different, and being a baked product the MAC powder will last you longer.

I don’t get on with cream highlights really but the rest of them look lovely, I definitely need bare as a dupe for MAC! I have the eyeshadow palette and I like it and I saved some but not all of the case they came in and I’m glad I did as I didn’t think about popping it out to take away! definitely need to get bare though, I might create a small highlight palette xxx

I love how they are refillable! And that you can pop them back into the individual pans – very handy for travel.
Hmm £24 does seem pricey for this when filled. But I suppose that’s one of the expense of buying individual pans rather than a pre-filled palette.
Precious and Bare (while quite opposite in their finishes) look like ones I’d enjoy! Now I really want MAC Soft & Gentle…

I love soft and gentle! It’s one of those products I saw used in tutorials and thought meh, but I’m so glad I bought it now!
When I think this is £24 on what’s essentially a makeup revolution palette, cause lets face it they’re all the same just under slightly different marketing names , and thats what makes me think I’ve been a bit mugged haha. It was only when I added it up I realised that it’s actually quite pricey, those £3 pans soon rack up!

I love palettes that make it easy to pop the pans out! No idea why it’s so hard for some companies to get.

There used to be a UK brand (I can’t even remember what they were called now!) who did it excellently but they disappeared, but they’d have mini eyeshadow trios in each pan so you could get even more out of your space for travel!

I have one of the Makeup Revolution Strobe Balms and they’re different to work with. I found applying with a small stipple brush then going over it with a damp beauty blender works decently.

I have 24 pans of makeup obsession now! 6 highlights, 12 eyeshadows, 3 contour and 3 blush 😛 I love the flexibility of them and the highlights are out of this world 😍

I’ve never heard of this brand, but everything looks so nice! Moon caught my eye in the pan, but I love how Precious looks swatched. £24 is not TOO bad when I think of the Anastasia Glow Kits, which are what…£30 and you don’t get to choose the shades? I guess depends on whether the quality is on par, though!

If you’ve ever tried makeup revolution products they’re on par with those, a little chalky but not bad for the price –
I wouldn’t say they end up rivaling any of my high end ones quality wise!

These look really nice colours. I’ve been tempted a few times but wondered about the gaps and the fact I couldn’t come up with a full palette of ones I wanted and didn’t have already kind of put me off. I haven’t even looked at the highlighters though, they do look pretty.

These seem great! I also love that you can see them from the bottom as well just to refer to.

This was such an interesting post to read! The adding up of the finances was super helpful too when comparing it with other palettes etc. Thank you xxx
