NYX HD Finishing Powder Review

NYX HD Finishing Powder review

Since NYX Launched in the UK, I’ve had my eye on trying their HD Pressed and Loose Powders, since they look so much like the Makeup Forever ones, I’ve tried (and reviewed here) the loose version of their powder, and whilst I was tempted to pick that up to try and compare, I was really in need for a new pressed powder as the loose one is lasting me forever, and I still have plenty of time to do a comparison before it runs out. But first we’ll start with a review of the NYX HD Finishing Powder on my oily skin.

I’ve had the pressed powder since the beginning of January and It’s been the one that I’ve reached for pretty much daily since then. The packaging is very simple and something about this makes it feel more luxury than NYX prices to me, I think it looks very sleek (or maybe it’s my brain drawing similarities to MUFE).

The powder in the pan is a pure white, although it’s a translucent powder – personally I always prefer translucent ones as it means I can use them for setting everything, and no matter how dark or light my skin tone goes, one powder suits all. The pan size to the eye reminded me very much of the Kick Ass Powder from Soap and Glory which I ran through so, so quickly – and I wasn’t wrong the Kick Ass Powder is 7.5g – this is 8g (compare that to Rimmel Stay Matte at 14g / MAC Pressed Powder at 12g), does make this smaller than average. Soap and Glory’s was £12 compared to this at £8, so the price better comparatively.

This powder is really finely milled and smooth, if you look at the picture below you may be able to see a single swatch going across the powder and notice how fine the loose powder looks. This is completely translucent and is a perfect final step for me to set my foundation, it’s much less prone to breaking up and whilst I have just hit pan on this two months in, I have been using this quite heavily as I’ve been experimenting using it for baking under the eye, so I have really been picking up a lot of product at the once, and I know if I’d been trying this with the S&G version I’d have been through it in half the short amount of time it already took to finish that up.

I’m really impressed with how the skin looks after using it, my skin looks mattified but not completely flat. One thing despite using it for just short of two months I hadn’t really paid attention to was how effective it was through the day at oil control, so I put this to the test by testing it on half of my face only over my current foundation of choice MAC Prolongwear. My skin looked and felt softer and the appearance of the skin texture looked slightly more even on the side where I used powder. Prolongwear should really be powdered I think (although I don’t always do) as without it has a slight tacky feeling that takes a while to settle down, and this cures that instantly, all over this performs well – at mid-day I felt and inspected my face closely in the toilet and noticed my makeup still looked freshly applied on the side which was powdered, whilst keeping away the signs of oiliness that were creeping into my forehead on the side with no powder. By the end of the work day the signs of difference are less noticeable visibly for me although strangely the side with powder still feels smoother, however the extension that it provides is noticeable to the 6-8 hour mark.

I like the NYX HD Finishing Powder a lot more than I expected I was going to, I estimate it might last me through to the end of March if I carry on using it every day, which for a powder of a small pan weight isn’t too bad going. I think I would consider getting this again in future although I’d probably hold of for an offer in Boots like 3 for 2, as I do think at full price I maybe have some cheaper alternatives that I like as much as this.

I use this powder too and it’s great! £8 is more than I’d normally spend on a face powder but I’m considering repurchasing it just because I love the finish it gives.

This sounds great! I’ve gone away from the matte finish for the cooler months since it can accentuate dryness on my skin. This could be a good option for summer months when I’m oilier and need more oil control. I’m also on a bit of a loose powder kick lately – I find they provide a really smooth flawless appearance.

I’ve tried this and the loose version. I like both. The pressed version in Banana is great for setting under eye concealer. Really helps brighten the area up.

I don’t reach for powder too much weirdly. I don’t know why, but it’s not something I test out too frequently. I own two, the MAC studio fix powder foundation which adds coverage too and the Nude By Nature loose translucent powder which is amazing for baking and completely stops under eye creasing!! This look flawless in your picture though!! Xxx

Very nice – I’ll have to keep this in mind the next time NYX is on sale 🙂 I love powder…and I agree, I always get translucent ones when I can.

I’ve never really experiemented with powders because I worry about my dry skin so I’ve given setting sprays ago although I think I might use powder on my chin and nose as thats the first place my make up fades and this sounds lovely

I really should try this under my eyes, as I tend to get baking under my eye as well. Considering the price I don’t think my wallet would get mad at me. Great review
