Base to Full Face Week – Makeup Revolution Retro Matte Lip Kit in Grandee + Giveaway

Probably the item I was most excited about in this Base to Full Face series was the Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kit from Makeup Revolution. For this one in the series I decided to review Grandee (I also picked up Royal), but thought more people would like to see how Grandee looked/it went better with the eyeshadow palette that I reviewed.

The Matte Lip Kits from Revolution are pretty fresh on the shelves launching just a few weeks ago. They mimic the idea of the Kylie Lip Kits with a liquid lipstick and complimenting liner – and come in at a mere £6. Whilst they copy the concept from what I’ve seen from people who are more well versed into Kylie Lip Kits (you won’t find me supporting the J or K-Devils, no matter how much I love liquid lipstick), they don’t seem to have ripped off any colours indentically. The range features 3 different finishes, a Metallic, Glossy & Matte finish – I opted for the Matte finish and that’s what I prefer however they offer a decent selection of shades across the three. I also didn’t want to go wild on all the different finishes and shades and discover I hated them.

The packaging of the products, especially the liquid lip is really nice. The packaging feels more luxe than it’s £6 total price tag (remembering that we have not one but two products for that price). The liquid lip comes in a high quality acrylic tube with a pretty frosted metallic rose gold cap. The applicator inside is nicely shaped and sized. Whilst the lip liner is in a matte black pencil with the rose gold Revolution logo on the side.

Grandee is the shade that I was most excited to try, I went off the box lip colours and I definitely should have googled some swatches. It looked like a gorgeous rose nude (exactly my go to every day shade) but as soon as I pulled it out I thought that it wouldn’t be quite right. I reserved judgement intially as I thought that maybe it would dry down darker once on the lips. Sadly it did not and the shade resembled more that of a Barbie than the gorgeous shade I was imagining me wearing daily for the foreseeable future. Swatched on my arm I must say I did look better than it did on my lips, but you’ll see more of that in a second!

Despite my disappointment that the colour wasn’t going to be quite what I expected I was still hoping to find a great formula product that would make me happily throw over my money for any other shades that tickled my fancy. The liner applied nicely as did the liquid lipstick and I had really high hopes about it’s longevity as once I tried to scrub the swatches of my arm with Micellar water, after a minute or so the liquid lipstick still looked barely untouched (it’s worth noting that the liner took a good chunk of time too budge too!).

After a minute of trying to remove with Micellar Water.

The instructions tell you to fill in your lips completely with the liner before applying the liquid lipstick. I’d seen lots of reviews which said that the liner was very creamy feeling, but what they didn’t say was that they also felt heavy and looked extremely cakey. By this point I already knew that adding a layer of liquid lipstick on top was probably going to look and feel even worse and I wasn’t wrong.

The whole of my lips felt really heavy and cakey and it just didn’t feel nice to wear at all, and that shade is nothing like the box once fully applied either. Both the liner and the liquid lip failed to stick to the inner part of my lip where it’s smoother at all, which left a really unattractive middle gap when talking/eating/drinking. The finish isn’t completely matte, almost more of a satin finish & it feels slightly tacky once dry.

Sadly the disappoitnment didn’t end there. After about an hour or so I’d had a cup of tea and a few biscuits (which I was eating carefully on purpose as I didn’t want crumbs sticking to my lipstick) and it didn’t fair well and I had to remove it after such a short time – even normal lipstick fairs better than this!

I retried the liquid lipstick by itself the next day to see if it applied nicer by itself and I must say it was much more comfortable to wear and looked slightly nicer (it was a sunday and I was just chilling in the house wearing no other makeup). It still didn’t have they staying power that I hoped for and broke up in a similar way to the swatch above immediately with eating and drinking.

Overall I’m so disappointed with this. I’ve heard so many people rave about these since they launched but there was nothing I liked about this, it doesn’t tick any of the boxes for me that I expect from a liquid lipstick, and when you say that genuinely the nicest thing about it is the packaging… then you know it’s a crappy product. Not only is the formulation not great but I absolutely hated the colour on me, I felt like a soccer-mom on TV who has bright orange skin and compliments the look with a colour lip that doesn’t suit her.

I think this is the first product from Makeup Revolution which has had me disappointed. I think we all know how much I’ve raved about the products in the past but this one for me is a dud.

When I bought this, I also bought a second to giveaway (that feels like a cruel joke now… sorry it was never intended that way). Hopefully you’ll be one of the people if you’re entering that will enjoy the formula, or failing that the accompanying palette should be great!.

I saw a few of these at Ulta tonight. Noble caught my eye but I didn’t get any. I’m personally over the liquid lipstick thing. Matte lips and I do not get along well. I’ve tried lots of different brands and only a couple work ok for me. I prefer satin or glossy finish anyway.

I’ve been so tempted to try these lip kits but every review I’ve read people haven’t liked the lip kits! It’s a great idea, shame about the quality x

Awww that’s so sad- I’ve wanted to try these out so badly!! Looks like my worst nightmare though. It’s too bad, the packaging is so cute haha. Thanks for the amazing review and heads up! xoxo

Great review, pity it isn’t a very good product though. I’ve seen a few reviews recently that said it’s not living up to the hype which is sad when so many seemed to be positive before. I am still tempted to try it if I do an order from Superdrug but not one I’ll be running to buy. Also disappointing with the colour for this one, it’s always annoying when the colour looks nothing like the box colour.

Xoooh. That is a real honest opinion and review. I thought of buying but now I won’t. It seems to be jst like Sleek Matte lipsticks. Don’t like the dryness that I see from photos and the wear time :-). Thank you

Oh no! The shade looks so dry on your lips

Oh dear, it looks really dry and the lip liner in the last two photos is really obvious, not in a good way. And the colour is totally off :/

That’s such a same. They look lovely and the colour looks a lot brighter on you than in the packaging x

  10. February 19, 2017 / 5:34 pm

Oh no! It sure looks kind of cakey and just not what I (or anyone, presumably, for that matter) would want in terms of consistency of formula at all! That shade would look absolutely awful on me as I only really suit reds and dark shades! It’s a shame that so much hype has been surrounding this product when it seems not to be all that great in terms of quality! 🙁 Still, better to review it so that others can be informed about it, and this was one brilliant review 🙂

Omg I almost bought it! Thank god i read this review first! Lol. I looked into the shades available and they honestly didn’t impress me.

  12. February 21, 2017 / 6:37 pm

I’m really glad I found this post! I’d been thinking about getting these kits. great post with great pictures x

These kits are really hit and miss, unfortunately I’ve also had problems with a few of them and even brought one with a broken lip liner but the new nudes collection liquid lipsticks are far better!
