My New Haircare Routine – Salon Science Review

When the team at Salon Science got in touch and invited me to try out some of their haircare I jumped at the chance. The brand is under the same roof as my favourite haircare brand Lee Stafford (we all know how many empties I’ve had from them in the past year!) and I’ve seen the Salon Science brand in Boots but not taken the plunge to try any items for myself.

I was asked to describe my hair type, which is definitely ‘Dry’ since the wake of winter. Despite having it cut at the start of December, my hair for the first time ever has actually reacted to the weather, and managing it hasn’t been fun. They suggested 3 products from their GSP-T Swiss Grape range – specially formulated for dry hair in need of radiance and repair, and a mask from the AquaCacteen range for hydration.

I started introducing the items into my routine one by one – I wanted to see what products would work and which may not have worked as well for me. The first item I tried was the Reglosse Smoothing Serum (£12), in the age of hair oils, I’ve not really used a serum in my hair for years. This can be used on both towel dried and dry hair to smooth, tame and nourish dry and frizzy hair. I must say I way prefer this to any hair oil that I’ve used in the past few years, it doesn’t weigh my hair down at all and makes it look shinier and feel better. I use this in my hair wet if I’m not going to style it, but if I’ve curled it or straighten it I also use this as a finishing product to add an extra layer of gloss and shine. Instantly I noticed how much better this made my hair look – it’s £12 which initially I thought of as a bit pricey for the highstreet, but the bottle size is very generous for serum, one pump is enough for me so this would last me a year at least I would have thought!

I then started trying the Retextureluxe shampoo (£11) and conditioner (£12) from the Swiss Grape range. The shampoo is a thin clear gel with a greyish hue, it foams up well and leaves my hair feeling really clean and moisturising. I’ve not had to dig out a clarifying shampoo since I started using this – it does a great job of removing build up daily. The conditioner I find a little bit frustrating – the fluid is really difficult to squeeze out, I’m not sure if I ended up with an odd bottle but it takes me a long time to get out what I need from the bottle. I actually find I need a bit less than I do with lots of other conditioners, the pale lilac cream feels very nourishing on my hair and really helps me in the shower trying to get a comb through my hair. I’m not sure whether the conditioner is a product I’d repurchase at this point, I have long thick hair and go through conditioner like crazy so £12 for a relatively small bottle could become quite pricey, I’ll keep you posted on my thoughts when it comes up in an empties, as I’ll be interested to see what difference it might make when I swap it out for something else.

The Hydrasorb Intensive Masque (£14) is the item from the Aquacacteen range – this is a thick cream almost balm like feel, this is one of the few masks which I seem to have managed to get more than 3/4 uses out of a pot of as it spreads quite far once on wet hair. It works really well for me and leaves my hair noticeably different over a conditioner – it makes my hair smooth, soft and also importantly not weighed down. Sometimes I can find that masks whilst nourishing can weigh my hair down – this doesn’t do that and leaves my hair feeling bouncy, not limp.

I’ve also asked Ben to try this on his scalp (sparingly) as it’s supposed to smooth the scalp too, Ben suffers badly with spots and dry patches on his scalp and he said this helped soothe the itchy feeling. He’s only used it a few times so far as I’d only just realised now I’m coming up to the review that this is a product that could work really well for him too so I’ll keep you posted in empties too. This has an almost menthol effect, I can feel a coolness that runs down my back every time I’m washing it out which makes me think it must feel amazing on irritable scalps.

The whole of the grape range smells really nice, it has that ‘salonny’ smell where you can’t quite pinpoint what it is, but is still smells good. The AquaCacteen mask smells very fresh and almost menthol like. Other than the fact that my hair does feel a hell of a lot better since using the line, my hair’s natural texture is way more noticeable. I reviewed the Irresistible Me Straighteners at the end of last year and you could see how my hair is naturally wavy, when it’s brushed out the waves turn into frizz which leads me to straighten it – with this I’ve left my hair more un-styled than I have styled since it became a part of my routine, the wave holds and my hair has texture without me needing to use anything drying in it like sea salt sprays.

I originally started writing this review up a month ago now, and I must say that I’ve only become more impressed with the line as I’ve continued using it. Out of all the bottles of shampoo and conditioner in my shower this range is the one that I reach for more often than not, and I can’t even contemplate being without the serum.

The Swiss Grape line is available exclusively at Amazon (here), whist the Aquacacteen range is also available at Boots – you can shop the range on Boots by clicking here.

Products sent for me to try but under no obligation to review, experience 100% reflective of my own experience with the brand and product.

I have to say I have been eyeing this brand since I saw it on Libbie Club Instagram and it is on my list next time I shop for hair care so it is good to read this review as I prefer hair serum over oil for me and the scalp mask is also what I would be interested in😃

These sound great, especially the serum! It’s worth the price tag it if it will last you a long time!

I have to say that hair is probably one of the areas I pay less attention to, and then wonder why my hair isn’t in great condition! I particularly liked the sound of the mask. I do sometimes struggle with irritable scalps and although I don’t spend an awful lot on everyday products I could splash out a bit for a once in a while treat!

I also struggle to justify spending a lot on products I know I use quickly, I tend to use about a bottle and half of conditioner a month, so need to see results from things to convince me to buy them! That mask is actually great, a little goes a long way with it, my partner has used it 3/4 times now as have I and it’s still just halfway gone, for a mask I think that’s pretty good!

I like the idea of a hair serum! They don’t really market any hair serums around here – I’ve seen leave-in conditioner or frizz tamer.
The masque also sounds great! I’ve been using a hair mask from L’Oreal and it’s pretty good. I always worry about them weighing down my hair too.
Swiss Grape sounds amazing! What’s so special about Swiss Grapes, I wonder?

I have been trying out the aqua thingy range and am not completely sold! I love the mask like you say it doesnt leave my hair feeling weighed down at all but the shampoo and conditioner dont wow me enough to convince me it would be worth the price tag, I am too much of a budget girl at heart!

Aqua Cacteen!? Yeah, for £12 a bottle it does need to be haircare that works for you – it’s more than I’d normally spend because I have to wash my hair 3/4 times a week, it’s so long and thick it takes me about a month to get through a normal sized bottle, I don’t like the idea of spending £12 a month on conditioner! xx

Ooooo, these sound lovely! I’ve not heard of Salon Science before, and am a Bumble and Bumble girl at heart. I always like to have a few high street gems stashed away though because who can afford to use B+B every day?!? The Hydrasorb Intensive Masque sounds right up my street – I get really dry hair in the winter as well. Will definitely have a nosey at these next time I’m in Boots – thanks for sharing lovely.

I’ve have one sample sized bottle of the Sea salt spray from B&B(which I’ve been purposefully saving for when we go on honey moon hoping it gives me ultimate beach hair goals!) – but other than that I’ve not tried anything, the price is a stumbling block for me especially as the bottles seem so small, what would you recommend as a starting point to try?

I was so hoping you were going to say they smell like grape! I’m a sucker for sweet scented shampoo so I almost went to click to buy! It sounds great and I had no idea they were under the same umbrella as Lee Stafford!
