MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Dionysus Review

MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Dionysus

Seeing the launch of the latest formula in lipstick from MAC had me intrigued, the Liptensity looked like everything you could maybe want in a lipstick, the first I added to my collection was MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Dionysus. Although it came with a problem, it was limited edition, I had mixed feelings of wanting to try them, but equally not wanting to fall in love with a formula which would be unobtainable in a few months (we’ve all been there!). Shortly after launch MAC announced that infact the range would be permanent with just a few colours in the range being classed as LE for launch, from then I relaxed with no immediate plans to go and get one – knowing they’d safely be around for some time yet.

It wasn’t until a few weeks ago at MAC that the MUA used one on me that I ended up walking away feeling like I needed one right away. I had plans to spend the cost of redemption back on a different shade from the range – a shade called Smoked Almond, a gorgeous everyday YLBB shade, but after he applied Dionysus I was in love. It was out of stock at the time in the store and I’d planned to order it online the next day – but the next day I ended back in MAC again whilst Christmas shopping and they’d had a fresh batch delivered overnight. Dionysus was mine there and then.

The tubes of the Liptensity range are coloured to match the lipstick inside the bullet. Who ever selected the colour for the tube of MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Dionysus did not swatch test this against the shade in the actual colour of the lipstick. When the MUA walked off to get a red lip and he came back with this one, I did give him raised eyebrows before he proved it by swatching it on his hand! So I do have the MUA to thank for selecting this as I’d never have swatched it – I don’t wear many deep dark browns, which is now this looked from the tube and would have always cast my eye over this shade if it wasn’t for him!

I’m not a big red lip wearer, I don’t know why but more than any other colour I fear it’s going to end up being smeared all over my face or teeth. I don’t love bright reds on my skintone, but deeper berry reds I can get on board with although I normally proceed with caution because of the fear of joker face. Dionysus is exactly the kind of red I love, and reminds me of another MAC shade from my collection called Hang Up – although that one has slightly plummier undertones in comparison. I wondered where the namesake of this lipstick came from and google greeted me with the following “Dionysus is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine” – sounds like a god I can get on board with and is entirely appropriate for this deep rich berry red shade. What I also like about this shade is that depending how heavy you layer it, will give you two different looks – a light hand gives a brighter red, while a heavy hand with a second layer over gives a deep rich red – both of the finishes are balmy and glossy looking – so the fact it gives you ‘2 looks in 1’ is a winner.

The liptensity range is a very glossy and balmy formula, the pigmentation is great and it takes a couple of quick and light swipes across the lip to . I don’t love the rounded shape and edge of this bullet, personally I’d prefer for it to be shaped more like a normal MAC lipstick. That rounded edge on a colour like this tends to mean that getting a precise line around the edge is more difficult which with bold colours like this could be a problem – although this does need a liner so isn’t major. The wear is very comfortable and isn’t drying in the slightest.

I’m a total newb when it comes to lip liners, I reach for them very rarely – this one tends to bleed a little – and I do mean little, the swatches in this post show them with no liner and you can see some fuzziness around the edges. The perfect combo with this (thanks again to the MAC MUA for applying this!) is MAC’s Burgundy liner. He got me to apply the lipstick to the centre of the lips first and as close to the edge as I could. Before going in with a liner second and sharpening up the edges, corners of the mouth and the center of the lip where bright lipsticks more noticeably show where lipstick doesn’t stick as well.

My Work Christmas Party Makeup feat. Dionysus

I can apply MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Dionysus for work in the morning, at 8.30/9am and with a quick touch up once during the day and it’s still on my lips at 6.30 at night when I get home. The glossy balmy finish lasts longer than I would expect, but when it does wear away at the 4/5 hour mark it leaves behind a stain like finish so doesn’t leave the lips totally bare. Up close after 6/7 hours the lips are a little bit patchy in appearance, however from a distance it’s not particularly noticeable. I’ve never felt comfortable wearing a red lip for more than a few hours before and it’s now a handbag staple for every day. For someone who didn’t wear red often, and usually saves it for short lived special occasions – I have been wearing this an awful lot – it is the absolute perfect shade for winter and the festive season, don’t be fooled by that burgundy brown tube. It’s so much prettier than that. This is definitely going to be worn this Christmas, I can see it already!

Have you tried the Liptensity Lipsticks?

It is so different to the tube colour isn’t it! And the colour difference between a light hand and a more intense application is amazing!! Xxx

That colour is so pretty. I wouldn’t have guessed that’s how it would come out looking at the tube, such a different colour.

This is a great Christmas shade! Suits you really well. I love the packaging and colour selection of this range… but as I said to you before, I found the formula to be a little bit tacky feeling on the lips. I might try it again in the new year…. I really wanted to like it!

Do try it again, maybe it’s different per shade but I definitely wouldn’t describe this shade as tacky feeling at all – balmy, but not tacky!

I agree for the shape of lipstick. I also prefer the tip on the top to make it easer to put on my lips. Only people with small lips know that. Have the same problem 😂. But nice colour tho. Nice post dear ✨

This shade looks wonderful on you! You’ve really made me want to try the Liptensity range now, I’ll have to swatch some shades when I’m next at a MAC counter.

I ADORE this new MAC formula. I believe I now own 6? *slaps hand*! Smoked Almond is gorgeous but perhaps more than that, I prefer Toast & Butter which is a gorgeous nudey brown! I also have Habanero (a bright orange/red) Burnt Violet, which I feel you might like as it’s a dark plummy red shade, Double fudge which is a really dark brown and today I got Marsala with a gift voucher! They are my absolute favourite lipsticks of all time which is a huge statement from me! This one looks beautiful on you! xxx

Thank you! I got a voucher for Christmas and I’m definitely planning on getting another, burnt Violet sounds up my street! I searched toast and butter but felt like if I was picking for my skin tone then smoked almond would probably be the right one for me!

Gorgeous shade! You look absolutely fab with that colour, and from your post, it seems like a very good buy – I might consider getting myself one, as I am into berry shades 🙂
