Soap and Glory Supercat Liner Review

Soap and Glory Supercat Liner

Soap and Glory’s makeup line has been something I’ve stood over and looked at it several times a year since it launched in Boots but I’ve never actually decided on a product I’d want to try. After I was recently stopped in my tracks by a recent GWP from them, I ended up deciding on two products to try, the first of which was the Soap and Glory Supercat Liner, something which I’ve heard really good things about in the past and seems to have a following who really adore it.

For the past year or so I’ve been using liners like The Balm’s Schwing or Illamasqua Precision Ink which on the surface are the same kind of product – but I’ve already found that they perform very differently. They both have felt tip nibs and both are liquid liners. The nibs on my previous favourites are thinner and more flexible – Supercat’s in comparison is very rigid and the nib is very tapered.

As soon as I spotted that it wasn’t flexible I wondered how I was going to get on with it, I’m so used to the flexible and thinner nibs now I didn’t think this would be easy for me to work with. But actually I was surprised that tapered nib doesn’t move so it’s not to difficult to create a nice and thin line, I’ve never been someone who can rock a cat flick so the ‘Supercat part’ is kind of wasted on me – I can’t comment on how easy it is to create a wing.

Unfortunately though that’s where the good news kind of ended for me, the first time I tried it was over eyeshadow and whilst the nib glided on the pigmentation just wasn’t there, it sank in and even after me layering over it three times it just wasn’t getting any darker. I decided to leave this upside down overnight to see if this worked better and making sure the product was really saturating the nib, I kept trying and trying and after about a week it was finally a better, but not as good as I’m used to. The pigmentation difference is particularly noticeable over more shimmery metallic eyeshadows, below is 3 swipes over of Supercat vs just one of the illasmasqua.

I tried this again sans-eyeshadow, and yes, It was a hell of a lot better (although it still wasn’t the blackest of black liners) but thats where I encountered another problem. I found that without a powdery base for it to soak into this smudges and budges like no other. And since using this on and off I’ve noticed, this is another Soap and Glory product that I’m allergic to, any time I wear this my eyes itch like crazy and it took me a few weeks to put two and two together and realise what was causing the issue.

The first day I wore this noticed one day as I was driving to work my eye felt a little sore and was watering (very slightly), when I checked in the mirror as I got to work as I took my sunnies off I’d rubbed and transferred all over my eyelid – my whole lid had gone black and smudged on one side. My eyes watering and itching is persistent every time I wear this liner, after a few hours I want to scratch my eyeballs out. So this is yet another Soap and Glory product that doesn’t work for me.

It’s a shame as I never seem to have any luck with Soap and Glory skincare products and I was hoping to have more luck with their makeup. The packaging of the Soap and Glory Supercat Liner reminds me of a nicer, less tacky – version of Benefit’s line – it actually reminds me a lot of the rebranded brow line from Benefit – although this did come first so I suppose it’s the other way round. This liner is priced at £6, so it’s about average for a drugstore price but the majority of items seem to fall above that, the powder I picked up for example was £12, which goes above Revlon prices. I know many people adore this liner, so I think the allergic reaction is bad luck on my part – but if you love shimmery eyeshadows, I don’t think this is the best liner choice for you regardless. I’m still testing out the powder I picked up from S&G, so far so good on that – hopefully it’s not all bad!

Have you tried Soap and Glory’s Makeup line?

You’re totally right – S&G packaging does look like BeneFit’s…I think I prefer it a little tiny bit. Still haven’t tried anything from them; I think my drugstore carries the bath & body stuff, but I haven’t seen the makeup.

I can’t imagine you not being able to rock a cat eye! 😀

Well that sucks about the allergic reaction and it not having enough pigmentation and smudging. I will keep looking lol.

Oh that’s too bad about this liner! I find liners that are felt tipped don’t seem to deposit the product on a swell as the types with actual brush tips. The only makeup item I tried from S&G was their Mother Pucker lip gloss but I didn’t like it – too goopy and the smell was so sickeningly sweet! I feel like S&G packaging is along the same vein as Benefit and theBalm… kitschy and twee.

The ones which are always soak themselves in the product are usually fine but proper pens always tend to be a bit crap in my experience!
Yes I think soap and glory is the better put together version of benefit or the balm both Those lines feel all over the place with packaging!

Aww, it’s too bad that this didn’t work for you! The price point is decent enough. I wish Soap & Glory had a wider selection of makeup here!
