Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Leo – Swatch & Review

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Leo

I’m not sure where to start with this review. I received this lipstick from Jeffree himself at the Beauty Bay event a few weeks ago, and the products have quickly gone into my handbag and have been in rotation since. One of the products I’ve been loving in particular is the Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Leo which he picked out for me, and said “I think this will really suit you, giiiiirl”. Thanks J-Dawg, it does.

One thing I will say before I start is that I know JS is a controversial character and personality in the Youtube world. There is very little that I’ve seen from him other than his feud with Kat Von D, and to be honest I probably wouldn’t have bought his products in future as I wasn’t sure what to think. I’m judging this review on the products, not him  – and my experience with meeting him was really good regardless so I have no reason to have beef with his brand.

So as always, let’s start from the top, packaging. The Liquid lipsticks come in a bright pink outer tube emblazoned with the Jeffree Star cosmetics logo in rose gold foil, the tube itself is a high quality acrylic with the logo and star details again featured all over in rose gold. There is a sticker on the bottom of the tube with the shade name on, which is easily readable, so there’s no scurrying around looking for which shade is which. So far, whilst I have been semi-careful with it, none of the foil on the tube itself has rubbed or scratched off – so it’s sturdier detail than some other packages (OFRA I’m looking at you). These are available exclusively in the UK at the Beauty Bay and are priced at £16 each. Link to buy these from the Beauty Bay is here – it’s also worth noting that they do ship internationally, and it’s free over £15, so if you’re looking for a place to buy Beauty Bay is a great shout.

One thing I do really like is the applicator – the brush length is a perfect length, it’s not too long so it’s easy to get a precise application. The doe-foot applicator is also perfectly curved, I tried my hardest to capture it and if you look closely you can probably tell what I mean, but the shape of it hugs the shape of my lip perfectly. That being said I do have a very full shaped lip (as everyone always comments, and I’ve had twitter DM’s asking me where I got them done… I haven’t for the record, they’re all mine), and I imagine if your lip is flatter shape then the wand might not be your favourite – but for me it works really well.

Onto what’s inside, the product itself. When I received this I kinda smirked at the name Velour, not getting what that would apply to, but now I totally get it. This isn’t a thin liquid lipstick the formula is quite thick and almost has that plush cushiony texture to it reminiscent of velour fabric. In terms of how it feels on my lips it isn’t my favourite, it doesn’t feel drying or uncomfortable – but I can definitely feel like it’s “there”.

Updated 2019 Photo: I have no idea why my lips look so dry and cracked in these pictures, it’s not reflective of the product.

The shade Leo, I probably wouldn’t have picked looking at the website, it looks like a dark peachy brown and the picture doesn’t do it justice at all. In the tube this looks quite warm toned to me, but when it applies I find it to be more neutral, it doesn’t lay too warm or too cool and is a really nice wearable shade, which will sit nicely on most skintones. It’s described on his website as a true matte honey brown and I totally agree with his description.

This formula is super opaque, and is very even in it’s application – I’m not left squinting in the mirror to check that there’s not a single streak. But it’s thicker formula does mean it takes about 5 minutes I’ve found before it’s fully set, but that’s worth every second of the wait.

The best point about this is it’s longevity. And I think it might steal the crown for the longest wearing liquid lip that I own, so much so that I’m thinking one of these might be a really good shout for my wedding day. I’ve worn this several times and each time I’ve been staggered at it’s wear. I’ve been applying this for work in the morning at about 7.50/8 ish and it’s still on when I get home from work at 6.15, in that time I’ve drank a lot of tea, water and snacked several times and ate something not lipstick friendly like soup and it’s still on, and looking good by the end of the day.

I swatched this against KVD Lolita (the first not second) as I thought it would be similar, but this is much more of a true brown in comparison, and when I came to wash it off in the sink, Kat Von D’s washed away after a few rubs over it, but this took some serious scrub to shift.

I thoroughly recommend the Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Leo, and I’m already eyeing up my favourite kind of mid rose nude from JS, called Rose Matters. Here’s another link to buy them at the Beauty Bay, should you be interested in treating yourself!

I like the tone of the lipstick but I can’t get over the design of JS products. It would feel like using kids makeup lol. Great post! 👍

The colour looks great on you. I’ve been curious about JS’ product, but his packaging is a huge turn off.

Not of fan of the packaging or the finish or the colour! Just so not “me”. At all. I can’t handle how DRY it looks on the lips. I just want to slather Vaseline all over your lips, you poor thing! 😛

My lips are just coming out of a period of bad suffering due to a bitter cold turn which sucked the moisture out of them, they do still look a bit cracked here!

Love the colour on you. Browns make me look dead but it looks lovely on you x

You rock the browns so well! I don’t love the packaging style but good to hear it’s nice quality. Too many high end brands cheap out on packaging, like we’re not gonna notice!

I wouldn’t really look twice at that colour but it looks gorgeous on you! Great post X

This is a really flattering shade on you! Personally, I can’t do lip products where you can feel that the product is there, and it’s not 100% comfortable – I feel like a lot of liquid lipsticks fit that category!

I’d normally cast myself as out but whilst I know it’s there it doesn’t feel weirdly uncomfortable! It’s a weird one! I can put up with it cause of how long it lasts

I agree, this shade doesn’t seem the most eye catching or stand out but it’s really pretty and looks lovely on you Rachael! The packaging is really nice too and that wear time – A+. I didn’t realise Beauty Bay offered free shipping, I will have to check out the site 🙂 x

I think this shade looks great on you! 😊

I wonder if this would be too brown for me or not. I bought this one from Dose of Colors called Cork? OMG, LOL. It had a green undertone. Devastating. TOTAL VOMIT SHADE. So, that’s not a brown I’m wearing. This one is a warmer brown which is nice, but I’m so fair, I wonder if I could pull it off or not? What do you think???

    • November 19, 2016 / 7:00 pm

I think you might be able to, it’s a pretty neutral brown I think, it doesn’t lay too terracotta or too cool – it dries darker than how it looks in the tube and cooler. And we’re about the same skintone as you’ve just said so should be okay?!

      • November 19, 2016 / 11:07 pm

Yeah, you are NC20 in MAC and I’m NW20. I just got so scared after buying Dose of Colors Cork. It looked so good on people on Instagram and then I put it on and it looked like vomit. I swear to god, exactly like vomit.
