OPI Russian Navy – Swatch & Review

OPI Russian Navy

Probably one of the most classic shades in the whole world of nail polish is OPI Russian Navy. A coveted favourite which I’ve had on my ‘eventually I’ll get it one day cause it’s always going to be around’ list for ages. When it arrived in my Second Tili Box I was excited to finally have my mitts on it after years of lusting over it.

Navy polishes are always ones which I opt for at this time of year, I love layering them with some holographic silver glitter on the ends that looks like snow falling. OPI Ink I fondly name as my all time favourite polish as my collection has grown over the past 2 or 3 years it doesn’t get as much use, whilst I still love it I don’t reach for it nearly as often. From looking at pictures Russian Navy has always reminded me of Ink, It’s not a pure navy, instead harbouring a deep purple sparkle that stops it from looking really flat. I was interested how they would compare in person. Whilst they are similar they are definitely not the same.

Ink has much more of a sparkly appearance compared to Russian Navy, whilst up close shots and close inspection reveal that Russian Navy isn’t a totally flat Navy shade, from a distance it looks very dark, almost edging towards passing as a black.

The formula of this polish is absolutely dreamy to apply, it’s a one coat wonder and applies completely opaque, I often find myself still doing a second – just out of habit, but if you’re the kind of person who is always doing your nails in a rush then this is a great option to have to hand to save you a coat or two of drying time. It dries relatively quickly, but like all OPI’s it’s nothing staggeringly impressive a normal 1-2 minutes before a topcoat can be applied. The polish has a reflective, light catching ability which means you can also sacrifice a topcoat for ‘yeah I’m super late’ days whilst I do prefer to wear one.

I like OPI Russian Navy a lot – but I don’t think it’s my favourite Navy, I wish this was just a shade lighter, upclose as above this polish is stunning, from a distance It’s just that smidge too dark, and has me feeling reminiscent of being a teenager and applying my eyeshadow nicely and then adding way too much black in the crease – close up it would look fine, but from a distance it looked too dark. It’s a polish I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of use from, but I think in terms of a true navy shade, it doesn’t outbeat my favourite from Barry M (which I’ve never reviewed!), but I love that purple fleck that features in this.

When I was looking up comparison swatches of the two I saw Cosmo with A Twist, hadn’t heard of it, but I immediately added on my list of polishes I keep on my phone to get! It looks similar but a little more flakey, i like it! Ink is still my fave over this one! x
