Sephora Formula X – Freaky Like Freud Swatch & Review

When I was researching the Formula X Polishes prior to going to New York, and I saw a polish called Freaky Like Freud, I knew it would be going on my shopping list, add to that it’s a gorgeous glitter that’s totally up my street, making it an utter no brainer.

Given the colour that Sephora described the last polish as made me laugh a lot, I decided to look up this one’s official description too – “periwinkle iridescent glitter”, for the most part I’d agree, I’d argue in most lights it’s more greyish . I think this may have been discontinued as I can no longer spot it on the Sephora – and came from their “Brilliants” line. This is exactly the kind of glitter I love, fine microglitter with a hint of colour but packed with holographic sparkle too. I adore it, fun Helpless Whilst Drying fact, I sent a video of this polish to all my friends when I got home from New York saying do you like my new polish, with the engagement ring at the end to show them I’m engaged. (Both the ring and the polish were widely appeciated by my chums).

The colour Vortex I reviewed last week wasn’t without it’s problems – a colour that sees the top layer chip at the tips quickly but leaves a layer underneath that just sticks terribly. I was hoping that I’d see better performance from this one, but arguably it’s worse. This peels off the nail entirely in one piece, no base coat I’ve put it with so far seems to help – somehow it seems to lay separate from it. Whilst it does need a topcoat otherwise the gorgeous glittery finish looks dull and sandy likewise no topcoat I’ve tried also seems to make a blind bit of difference. I could live with the peeling if the polish lasted a good few days, but sadly in under 24 hours it’s gone, I only need to scratch my arm, or go in the shower to see these lift away instantly.

I’m not sure what’s happened to this bottle but since I last used it the consistency has gone really gloopy and thick – it’s just passable to be able to be applied, however I fear coming back to it in another few months that might be a different story if it deteriorates in the same way – It’s like all the clear base is drying up. I will say though that the performance issues that this polish has had have been there from the get go, and I remember this peeling from it’s first wear. Now it needs 2 coats to be opaque, but I think it needed more like 3 when it was fresh, new and non-gloopy.

After less than 16 Hours Wear…

I repulled out these recently prior to going to Milan to decide whether I wanted to pick up any more for if I managed to revisit a Sephora. I decided unless a colour was so unusual that I just would never find it anywhere else, then the Sephora X polishes were not for me – maybe the creams would perform better than the glitters, but I don’t know that I’d want to splash the cash, or go to the effort of working out how to get the over to me in the UK unless a colour had me absolutely besotted.

Maybe you could pour some clear polish into the bottle? Or just some good ol’ polish thinner. But the glitter on this one is GORGEOUS! I’d be staring at my nails all day especially in sunlight. So sucky that the formula doesn’t work for you though. On the up side, glitters are notorious a pain in the ass to remove – think of the trouble you saved yourself! 😉

Haha, this one has a build in Peel off Base Coat, I have thought of that, there’s no ball on the inside to help mix it up though so I’m not sure if I’d ruin it.
Controversially don’t own any thinner, I don’t know if I can be bothered with buying it for just one polish – given I’ve coped 10 years of polish hoarding not needing one!

I’m cracking up. The glitter is pretty though! I would be pissed if the polish started peeling. OMG, and me? Miss OCD? I’d never stop peeling them until every spec was off. It would be a whole scene. LOLOLOLLLLL

Once one nail has a tiny chip it has to be picked off my nails immediately, can’t deal with it either! Peeling is even worse than chipping though they pop off so easy it makes it too tempting!

Such a shame it peels and doesn’t last as this is one of the prettiest polishes I’ve seen. Love your video too. So fun and cute to flash the ring x

haha thank you, I knew if I started calling them just after I got back from new york they’d know why I was calling, but it’s totally normal for me to flash sparkly nail polish at them, it took a few of them more than one viewing to understand I had a new bit of bling!
I agree, I think if it wasn’t for the peeling this would probably be my favourite polish of all time! It’s just neutral enough that it goes with everything – but the hint of periwinkle stops it from being a boring silver! xxxx

Definitely. It’s such a wonderful shade. Haha that’s funny. My friends would be the opposite. If I sent a nail polish video they’d wonder what was wrong lol😂 it’s a really fun way to tell them. But I bet they was so distracted by your pretty nails, it look a second glance to see you have an equally pretty ring xx

It’s the most sparkly glitter I’ve got by far, I’ve tried layering it with Gel base and topcoat and it doesn’t help it last much longer, think there must be something fundamentally wrong with the formula!

The ring is drop dead gorgeous!! 😀 Very fun glitter polish, too. I’m not big on glitter but this one is so OTT, I dig it.
