Makeup Forever HD Powder Review

Makeup Forever HD Powder

I’ve been really good with waiting to use this powder. I forced myself to save it after receiving it in a Love Me Beauty Box a few months ago whilst I finished up every other powder in my collection. When the day came that my final powder (other than my banana powder) was empty I jumped for joy that I could finally crack out the Makeup Forever HD Powder.

Make Up For Ever is a brand I’ve lusted after for a long time, it’s only in the past 18 months become readily available in the UK, and for a long while it’s only been in one Debenhams store in the whole country (although I have seen it now in a second one – so fingers crossed we’ll see the starting to appear everywhere!).  When you’re so unfamiliar with a brand due to it being inaccessible, and it coming at a premium price point, it’s hard to actually bring yourself to take the plunge and order things blind without knowing the textures, how their shade selection works etc.

In my Love Me Beauty Box, I picked 2 Make Up Forever items, the other was their Smoothing Primer which I’ve already reviewed (link) and L.O.V.E. and despite the fact it’s just a half size is still going strong and has been the one which I’ve pretty much reached for every day since getting it.

The MUFE HD Powder is a loose transluscent powder which comes in their sleek, simple yet glossy packaging. There’s something about the MUFE packaging that I love, I’m not sure how to pinpoint it, and whilst everything I’ve tried is plastic cased – it’s good quality plastic casing (just felt really weird typing that, hopefully someone gets what I mean!).

The loose powder is protected from spilling and over use with a mesh sifter, and a indented plastic lid which stops the product from shaking out with travel. Whether it’s the smaller size of this, or it’s like this across the board, I’ve found that the indent does a bit of a half arsed job and there’s normally some product escaping. The sifter isn’t my favourite, again this maybe a travel size issue – but I find it difficult to easily get out the amount of product I need. I normally resort to tipping some out onto the inside of the lid, and swirling my brush inside to more easily pick up the product.

The mesh looks all nice and fresh in the image, but in reality after a month of use, it’s unavoidably stained with foundation (unless I was going to go in with a fresh brush every time I needed to put more on my face, and given it struggles to pick product up easily – that’s difficult!).

“So what about the powder performance?” I hear you cry. Well – the powder is very finely milled and so so soft in texture, when applied to the skin it has an undetectable presence in terms of how it makes your skin feel. This seems to help smooth everything out and add a matte, but not flat appearance to your complexion – personally what I really like as a powder finish.

The place where it delivers less for me is oil control, whether that’s because we had such a hot and humid July, or it’s just not the best in that area- but I’ve found this has worked better for me as ‘occasion’ makeup where I don’t mind re-powdering through the day or for an evening out when I wanna look flawless for a short space of time, but for work I a) don’t want to be using buckets of expensive powder b) don’t have time to consider what my face looks like between 8.30 and 5.30. That being said I never end the day looking awful and like I’ve dipped my head in a oil fryer, just that I wasn’t as matte as when I started the day.

This like the primer, seems to be lasting really well – I was expecting that I would be through this half size in about a month but there’s still loads of product left inside.

I’m pretty new to loose powders, I’ve normally been put of by their messiness for travel, but this half arsed lid is a revelation for me (as it’s not impossible to travel with) but if you can think of any others that you think I should try let me know, even all powders as I need another cheaper one for daily use!

Have you tried the Makeup Forever HD Powder?

Great blog, as always I wasn’t keen on this powder I found it too white and it looked a bit cakey on my skin. My favourite is still Coty Airspun loose powder. It’s brilliant and inexpensive. Have you tried it? X

i’ve wanted to try it for years, not available in the UK though and the only place to get is Amazon and it would cost about £30 to get it here! I looked for it whilst in New York but could not find it anywhere!

I haven’t tried this powder but I have a sample of it! I love loose powders. My favorite is the Laura mercier universal powder.

Yes, mesh screens are good in theory but I never found them to be great in usage. I much prefer having actual HOLES. I can dispense as much or as little as I want.
I never understood the appeal of loose powder – why would anyone bother with the mess? Then it was explained to me that loose powders are usually finer milled and doesn’t contain binding agents (or fillers). I definitely can see a difference especially for using as setting powder under my eyes.
I’ve use the Laura Mercier Secret Brightening powder which I love. I am using the Nars one right now and I really like it. Other powders I’ve used that were good: Bourjois, and ELF.

I went to test out some products from Valentina as she has a friend from the UK visiting her and was bringing stuff over, she had a list and wanted to know what was good – for those that I didn’t know I went and looked for, the Bourjois powder is one of those and it’s next to be tried!
Want to try more Laura Mercier so I may add that to the ever growing list to try!
Elf is so expensive here now with shipping it’s not worth it! I’m also interested in the NYX one which is packaged pretty much identically to this!

This sounds lovely, apart from the packaging but that is always so tricky with loose powder. Not exactly a budget tip, but I adore my Chanel pot. A little expansive to buy, but it has been going strong for about 1.5 years now and I am not even half way through. Obviously, i have given up trying to finish powders before I try something new.

Try the baremineral original veil perhaps? Warning, it does give a slight pinkish tint if you load it on. My skin feels very soft though 😉
