6 Months On: Michael Kors Medium Selma Bag

Returning from shopping in New York, my Michael Kors Selma was the star of the show when it came to my purchases. I’d been eyeing an even more expensive handbag but when it came to being in Macy’s stood with the cash I just couldn’t bring myself to splash the cash. In retrospect I’m really glad I didn’t as about three hours after buying I was engaged that extra £500 went into my savings when I got home and has already been spent on deposits for various wedding shit.

This is my fifth Michael Kors Bag, I have two larger Jet Set tote style bags, a pebble leather black clutch and a bright pink studded mini Selma I bought last summer in the sale. After buying that mini Selma I fell in love with the fuss free cross body style bag – and moved away from large tote bags. I wanted another Cross Body style bag but one that was slightly larger.

About 3/4 years ago I got fed up of buying handbags at around the £50-£70 mark to find that they wouldn’t last me more than a six months. I decided to try my first high end bag – a MK that I got from an outlet, and I couldn’t have been happier. That one lasted me two years before I upgraded to a newer version, and other than a little bit of cracked piping on the handles it lasted fabulously and is still in my possession!

I was there in January and at the time the Sales were in full force and there were discounts on already discounted things and I really struggled to pick. In my head I had in my mind getting a classic navy one, but there were some lovely coloured ones in the Sale from the autumn collection in wine colours which also tempted me.

I then spotted the one I purchased – another LE one from the spring collection – a tricolor Selma with blush, beige and white – when I got home I tried to research the name and it wasn’t available in the UK at all – so it made the purchase all the more special. Once I spotted it that was the one and I couldn’t be happier with the choice I made. (But do kind of wish I got the red one in the sale as well, cause you know you can’t have enough bags).

Since then it’s been my everyday handbag, I’m a halfway house of looking after my bag, I don’t like putting it on the floor, and don’t throw it about – but I’m not particularly precious over it either. I don’t think I’ve cleaned it once (prior to taking the pictures for this post) and it’s not looked dirty.

Something I already knew from having 3 other MK Bags in the same fabric was I love Saffiano leather. It’s so hardwearing and doesn’t scratch at all. Each bag I’ve had I’ve used for the best part of the year – or in one case two years. The Selma bags are much more structured than the Tote bags and both of mine have held their shape perfectly despite being constantly overstuffed.

I’m a tall girl – and the problem I’d always had with cross over body bags in the past was that they just didn’t sit in the right position on my body. These are a game changer the strap is super long and adjustable, with a belt type buckle to allow you to make it longer and shorter as you need. There’s two short handles to carry in the crook of your arm if you wish – personally I don’t wear it this way often – but when I do I adjust the strap down to it’s shortest and it hangs a lot nicer, looking more like a detail to the bag than a over long strap.

The only thing I’ve found slightly disappointing with this is the silver hardware studs on the bottom have scratched away from the outer coating quite quickly and I can’t really understand why. It sits on my desk most of the day – not moving, and I tend to pick it up and move it rather than push it around, and the most wear to the metal I would have thought would be on the long strap clasps where they’ll move and swing when ever I carry it, but there it’s still all shiny and silver. At least it’s on the bottom of the bag, so it’s not that noticeable – but it’s something to note.

This cost me $298/£212 at Macy’s in New York that’s about £150 cheaper than it would have been in the UK (although current conversion rates will differ if you’re going- THANKS BREXIT!). So if you’re heading to the US and have your eye on this (or any other MK purchase) it’s worth holding out for.

Overall I’ve been really happy with this bag and how it’s worn. I’m a fan of the cross body bag still – and like this selma style, it’s a style which is easily dressed up or down and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another if I needed/wanted to.

Are you more high end or high street when it comes to bags? Let me know in the comments

I think I just fell in love with a handbag that I don’t even own! Lovely post! Designer bags are such an investment but totally worth it! Xx

Isn’t it pretttty! You can easily spend £100 on a decent quality high street bag, it’s worth saving up for me to have something I’ll treasure and look after for years!

I love that your following up on a purchase. There are so many posts that show a new product but never shows how they get on it with it over time. Thank you x

Thanks Amy! It’s great seeing something when it’s new and shiny – but it’s not really a true reflection of how the product actually is long term! Defo want to start doing more posts like this where they fit in (defo don’t buy that many designer handbags though to do it as regular as big youtubers would ha!)

I’ve not owned a single Michael Kors bag and here you are on your fifth one! 😛 I find them a bit bulky / heavy even when empty. Your bag still looks absolutely perfect even with daily use for the last 6 months!
I’m not too fussy when it comes to my bags… I used to carry a Coach one, now I’m using a Fossil one. My winter one is from Roots (Canadian leather company). I tend to not change my bags on an annual basis. Hmm you got me thinking perhaps I need a new bag this Fall?
And yeah… all my online purchases have come to a halt. Thanks BREXIT!

I can see what you mean about them being bulky (depending on style), but definitely don’t find them heavy!
I’m very savvy with buying them!
      First One: Outlet £130
Second One: Online Shop Shutting Down £120
      Third: TK Maxx £80
Forth: Seasonal Sale at MK £120
      Fifth: New York Exchange £200
… Sixth MK being sent for review/feature in a fashion post 😀 Lucky Girl!

  6. They’re such a classic, I feel like the first I bought almost 5 years ago is still in style which I love, makes an investment worthwhile! You’ll get there, save every penny you can and keep it in a hidden spot that you’re not tempted to touch! I almost had a powder blue cross body on it’s way, but it’s a coral one instead!

LOL I love how you sneak in that brexit comment in there Wahahaha. Looks like Selma has been a fab investment piece for you. Much cheaper in US for sure. I bought my MK tote in 2010 and it is still hanging in there.

I’ve been looking at this bag for ages but in black/navy! Great to hear that you are loving yours, it only pushes me in the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) direction
