MAC Patent Polish – Clever – Swatch & Review

MAC Patent Polish – Clever – Swatch & Review

MAC’s Patent Polishes are a product which have stayed relatively off radar for me, despite being an avid MAC lipstick collector I’ve never tried these – or looked at them in a store before so when one arrived in my Look Incredible Box I was left wondering whether this was a discontinued product – but alas it is not!

The shade Clever is a mid warm brown nude shade which is mostly opaque, but not quite – the colour of your own lips could quite easily alter the way this looks and I’ve noticed on me it picks up the pinky hue of my natural lips ever so slightly. Without the shade of my lips altering the colour I’d describe it as a similar tone to MAC’s Cosmo – and I bet this would be pretty layered over it.

I love the texture of this product, MAC themselves describe this a gloss & lip pencil hybrid – I’m not sure that’s a right description in my book. It applies as a glossy balm and of course has the trademark MAC Vanilla lip product scent, making a very comfortable wear on the lips. Being that balmy type texture as you’d expect it doesn’t have the longest wear time, the shiny gloss it starts with wears to a more balm like texture within about 30 minutes of applying – and with eating and drinking the gloss disappears immediately. The colour stays on the lips for a good 2 hours – 3 at a stretch – before it’s gone and needs reapplying, being a natural toned colour this fades very naturally into the lips, but I’m not sure how that would compare with a colour which would have a bolder pop. Same comment goes for application – I can sit and apply this at my desk sans-mirror and be fairly confident that I’m not looking like the joker, which makes it a great product for the handbag – but I’m not sure I’d be saying the same with more noticeable shade that needs a bit more precision.

Another thing to note that I like about this is whilst it looks like a pencil it does in fact twist up. I thought this would be roughly the same gram quantity as a MAC lipstick at 3g, but these are just 2.3g – considering these are a whole £2 more for almost a third less product it makes them a little more expensive. Personally I’m not sure unless there was a particular colour I wanted to get my hands on that I would be trying anymore Patent Polishes – sticking to the glossier creamy formulas from the regular MAC line. That being said I can see this becoming a staple in my handbag, but a product I’m likely to go through quicker thanks to the frequent need to reapply and top it up.

I’ve been wanting to see a review on this lippy before trying it myself so thanks!! I LOVE the colour but I’ve got really pigmented lips so it probably wouldn’t show up on me, may give it a miss 🙂 Jay

I LOVE MAC’s Patent Polish! I only own one called Ruby from the Sharon Osbourne Collection. I think I would wear the heck out of the shade you got though. Glad to hear it’s not a limited edition or discontinued product! I don’t mind the fact it’s less product, I mean, when was the last time I finished a whole lipstick?!

Haha true, I still feel a little bit cheated that it’s more money for less product though – if it was the same money for less product I’d be a little more on board! Yes this is a you shade – think you’d like it! Just looked up Ruby, gorgeous shade!
