Maybelline Dr Rescue CC Base Coat Review

I’ve had this base coat since November and it’s fair to say whilst I absolutely love the Dr Rescue topcoat from the same range (seriously, it rivalled the likes of Seche Vite for me) the Maybelline Dr Rescue CC Base Coat didn’t impress me from the offset, I put it away for a few months and came back last month to start putting it to the test again.

The Maybelline Dr Rescue CC Base Coat is described as a colour correcting base coat designed to conceal and whiten the nails and be used underneath dark polish to avoid stains. Sadly this still after a mini break from one another, this base coat doesn’t really deliver for me.

I hadn’t really noticed the first few times that I used this – mainly because I’d skip straight from Base Coat to colour, without really paying any attention but this does have add a milky whitening hue to the nails, it’s super shiny, actually by itself it makes the nails look pretty healthy and if I’ve been short of time I’ve been seen wearing this a few times over the past few weeks.

Where the Maybelline Dr Rescue CC Base Coat doesn’t deliver enough is as a base coat, whilst yes, it has done a perfectly good job of protecting the nail from stains in terms of increasing wear time it hasn’t delivered at all. I’ve tested it the past month with polishes that chip badly to polishes that hold up pretty well and none of them have lasted any better with this as a base – that’s the main reason I want a base coat to work, I rarely use one for any other reason, stains don’t really bother me as my nails are constantly painted!

I’d still thoroughly recommend the topcoat, if you’re looking for a budget friendly option I haven’t come across anything that can beat it – but I’d give this one a skip.

What are your favourite base coats?

I use the top coat you’re talking about and it’s so good! Have you tried the Dr. Rescue All-In-One?

No I haven’t. I had considered it when I bought the top coat but decided not to as everything I read about the top coat was so positive and favourable.

I’ve been disappointed with base coats for a long time. I came across something by accident a few weeks ago, I recently tried Sally Hansen’s big matte top coat. It turns any polish from a shiny finish to a matte one and works very well. I was grabbing polish and grabbed this by mistake and used it as a base coat. When I was finished and saw what it was, I thought, oh well we’ll just go with it. I haven’t had a chip all week and it didn’t affect my shiny polish at all.

    • Oh that sounds like an interesting find, normally I find matte topcoats make my polish chip like crazy, I’ll have to give that a try with one of the many I own and see if it does the same thing!
