MAC Oh Lady – Retro Matte Swatch & Review

MAC Oh Lady – Retro Matte Swatch & Review

When the Retro Matte Liquid lipsticks launched from MAC, they had a hell of a lot of chatter from every big youtuber out there. The reviews of it seemed pretty marmite, you either loved them or you hated them, personally I found the range pretty uninspiring and there was only one from looking at swatches online that I wanted to get my hands on and that was MAC Oh Lady.

MAC Retro Matte Oh Lady was a pain in the butt to find, lots of the colours were sold out everywhere but luckily I managed to get my hands on the last tube of Oh Lady in Heathrow on flying out to New York (fun fact, I said ‘Oh Lady’ to the sales assistant about 10 times – and she kept thinking I was saying Old Lady, I had to result in going and getting the product to show her because her brain just could not compute what I was saying).

These aren’t cheap at £21 each (or $20 – the disparity in MAC’s US/UK pricing is getting so much worse! Equivalent in dollars is just less than $30), so at a whole £6.50 more expensive than then their regular lipsticks MAC are really asking you to invest, this product puts them more in the region of brands like YSL – so expectations are going to be high.

The formula of this is a little disappointing, it has a tendency to go a little patchy and can need two coats which you have to apply before it completely dries. Reapplying this at any point during the day is horrible, the product clings to where it’s completely dry and goes lumpy, patchy and just generally looks horrible – meaning this can only really be relied upon for something like a meal out or a short trip to the shops, anything more than a couple of hours it needs reapplying, and when you need to reapply it goes from looking lovely to awful.

I do find myself reaching for this quite often, the colour is different to every other liquid lipstick I own, but it just lets itself down on the reapplication front. One thing I do really like about this is the packaging, with a heavy clear acrylic tube and that classic MAC lipstick lid, it feels part of the same line while feeling a bit special compared to their usual lipsticks. The wand is the perfect length, it’s quite short with a fat tube so it’s easy to control, and the tip is very tapered so it makes it easy to get an angled cupids bow.

There is one other shade from this range that I’ve now got my eye on having seen it crop up on a few blogs since ‘Tailored to Tease’ which is a bright pink purple.

Let me know if you’ve tried any from the Retro Matte range and what your thoughts on the line are!

The colour looks amazing on you but the formula completely puts me off these! I’ve found so many liquid lipsticks that have a much better formula than this, for example the Lime Crime ones!

I agree unless there’s a colour which is particularly unusual I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it otherwise. Personally I won’t support lime crime but agree there are better out there πŸ™‚

Haha Old Lady. What shade of lipstick would THAT be? Some super bright pink frost number? πŸ˜‰
The colour looks fantastic on you but the formula sounds quite high maintenance – would applying a balm underneath help at all?

I have tried at approach and it just makes it sit really weirdly, maybe it wasn’t the ‘right’ lip balm – I’ll have to do some more experimenting! It was like having a conversation with a brick wall… total blank expression on her face!

Do your lips always look so full, so big? I really like it, and was asking myself if it is because of the lipstick or because you just have beautiful lips πŸ™‚
