New York Haul – Duty Free, Macy’s & Victoria’s Secret

New York Haul – Duty Free, Macy’s & Victoria’s Secret

If you’ve not been keeping up this is part 2 of my New York Haul series (of 3!). If you missed part 1 where showed everything that I showed in Times Square’s Sephora here. Then check that out if you wish – here I’ve got what I got in Duty Free on the way out and way back – as well as Macy’s handbag purchases and a few bits from Victoria’s Secret.

Macys

Michael Kors Medium Selma Tricolour Bag – $298 (£212)

I knew whilst in New York that I wanted to buy myself a handbag – when leaving my old job for my new job I had quite a chunk of owed holiday money that I got paid and thought I would treat myself with something. I was debating between a much more expensive purchase (Alexander Wang Rocco) but when we was shopping in Macy’s, I was tired, cranky and had aching feet – and could not be bothered to find the Alexander Wang section and settled on my second option of another Michael Kors. This is my fifth Michael Kors bag – I bought a small Selma last year and whilst I love it and it still looks like new, it’s bright pink – and I wanted a better option for winter.

I also wanted something that was slightly bigger whilst still cross body, so the medium Selma was a perfect choice. Originally I was planning on buying the navy bag – but I just didn’t like it in person. I did fall in love with this one though with Nude/Taupe and Cream Shades it will go with everything all year round – no excuse to buy another ey? I saved roughly £120 buying it in Macy’s as they’re £330 in the UK – and I’ve not actually been able to find this one from the Spring Collection either.

I’m glad I saved myself £600 on a less extravagant purchase as that evening was the night my Boyfriend proposed – so I put all the money I saved not buying that handbag into my savings account for wedding, a much more sensible and guilt free option!

VICTORIA’s SeCRET

3 Body Sprays – Introductory Repackaging Offer 2 for $10

I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I saw the Victoria’s secret body sprays had been beautifully repackaged, and not only that they were on a reintroduction offer of 2 for $10. Why did I only get 3? Well I didn’t – I got 6, my sister and I are both massive fans of these and they’re not easy to get hold of here with VS shops few and far between and no online ordering yet, so I got 3 for myself and 3 for her. The scents I got were Rush & Secret Escape – ones I haven’t tried before and Love Addict one of my long time favourites. I’ve been out of these for a while so I was happy to some back.

VS Love Me More Sight Rollerball – $10

I got this on a bit of a whim, I’d been planning on buying the Elizabeth and James Nivana Rollerballs when in Sephora – but one I didn’t like very much and I wasn’t quite convinced enough on the other to spend $28 on it. I have however been loving carrying a rollerball in my handbag and they’re not something that’s easy to get your hands on at all here. This was a total whim, at the counter – it just got thrown into the mass of body sprays! Haven’t tried this yet, I’ll report back.

Heathrow Duty Free

I didn’t go too crazy on the way out as I knew I was going to go a bit crazy before going. Just before leaving I was looking through y foundations deciding what to take with me and I decided I didn’t want to take any of them – none of them have been matching me well and my skin is at the palest its ever been just about, this winter has just sucked the life out of my skin! I made the bold decision not to take any – and hope there was a MAC counter at the airport – luckily there was.

MAC Pro Long Wear Foundation – Roughly £20 in duty free mac-pro-longwear-foundation-heathrow-duty-free-new-york-haul

I went straight to get this – by far the foundation I’ve repurchased more than any other and the one I love the most by MAC. I got colour matched as I normally wear NC25 but knew it would be too dark, and got matched for NC20, I think even this is a smidge too dark, but I can still get away with wearing it and it will last into when we eventually get some sunshine and my complexion warms up a bit! I’ve never actually reviewed this so I will do now I have a bottle again!

MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in Oh Lady – Roughly £17 in Duty Free

I knew I really wanted to pick up one of the Retro Matte lipsticks, but they sold out online almost instantly. I wondered whether they would be cheaper in America but decided to just get the one shade I was interested in whilst I saw it in stock. I don’t find the range particularly inspiring, although I’d like a deep red if they do one as I’ve adored this so far and have worn it loads already. I hope they expand on this line and add more shades, it’s a line screaming for exciting colours – and more nudes which weirdly there isn’t really one1

(Fun Fact – the sales assistant took about 6 attempts to hear that I was saying “Oh Lady” not “Old Lady”!)

JFK Duty Free

I was expecting duty free to be incredible in New York but it was very disappointing – I would say the main beauty free store was about the third of the size of any that I’ve been in the UK. I had a chunk of money I’d put aside and was trying not to spend and was down to my last $100 – including pre flight food. Opting only to go to a McDonalds – as really it was the only choice other than a sit down meal – meaning I walked away with $80 to burn.

I thought the only other shop other than the little duty free (which prices seemed really expensive in), was Victoria’s Secret. It was only after we turned the corner and started walking to our plane we discovered lots more shops and resturants, and I regretted purchasing this almost immediately. I wish I’d gone and bought a load of MAC lipsticks or saved my cash and took it home – JFK if you’re reading (I know you are haha) put a sign up saying more shops and restaurants this way…

Victoria Perfume – $70

This was a total whim purchase again, and I kind of regret picking it up. I think I was that desperate to spend my last bit of cash – but now thinking that was about £40 I wish I’d bought it home or treated myself to something from MAC… had I of known it was there! I am using this and I do like it, but would I have purchased it for the same price here? No probably not – the packaging is beautiful though, proper vanity eye candy!

Have you tried any of these? Don’t forget to check out Haul part one here! Part 3 will be up in a few days, also don’t forget to enter my Win My Favourites Giveaway if you haven’t already!

That bag is really beautiful, I’m aching to treat myself with a nice bag like that. One day!! And I love the MAC liquid lipstick you chose, that’s definitely one (of two) I intend to buy later on! xx

If three years ago you told me I would own one designer bag (albeit lower end of the designer range!) I wouldn’t have believed you, let alone bag number 5 from them now – but I started putting away a small bit of cash away monthly separately to my normal savings which has meant I can splurge on items without having to break the bank or feel guilty about dipping into my normal savings! You can snap up real good deals on MK when they move between seasons more than any other designer I think – when they discount old season colours it’s normally by 50% – so you can snag a real deal!
Oh Lady is fab, I’ve started up writing the review of it, just need to find time to get snaps which I’m running behind with at the moment! which other colour are you considering?

Tailored to Tease (and To Matte With Love a little bit, but not as much). I wish I were better at saving money, but the second I have extra money I spend it right away. That’s definitely something I need to work on, especially as I start looking for big girl jobs! xx

I’m getting better but my brain is wired to be a spender not a saver! I’ve started at the start of the month as soon as I’m paid putting money into my savings so it’s gone and forgotten straight away, I can’t make any saving decisions past week 2 as that money has already been eaten in to!

Pretty bag! You’ll always have it to remember your special NYC trip! 🙂
It’s really too bad you didn’t get to Victoria’s Secret before they discontinued their makeup line – they had some amazing gems.
Are there discounts or special items at the MAC duty-free stores? I’ve never visited a MAC duty-free – just curious. I think the best duty-free I’ve ever been to was in Hong Kong… it was like a wonderland of makeup!

They used to do these ‘Look in a box’ sets which were travel exclusive – had an eyeshadow trio, liner/mascara, gloss, and lipstick and it was something like £25 – which I never managed get my hands on but always keep an eye out if they have them or something similar. I wanted the new Viva Glam Ariana lipstick – but neither the UK or NYC ones had got it in store yet. Other than that they’re the price less tax, that’s the only deal you can get – but that’s pretty much the best offer you can get in MAC! I’m eyeing up places in Asia for honeymoon – have seen their duty frees are generally pretty good looking (not that should be a factor in deciding of course :p!)
