January 2016 Empties Part 1: Makeup, Nails, Face & Hair

I’ve seriously slacked with getting my January Empties up, I had these photographed a week before the end of the month – never got them edited before heading to New York, sat to edit them and at some point I deleted the images. Sigh. I do now have lights and a tripod which makes the need for waiting until weekend daylight a thing of the past! After December’s measly sized empties – January is back with a frequent split two parter, this time featuring Makeup, Nails, Face Skincare & Haircare.

Soap and Glory Glad Hair Day Shampoo (review)

I’m so glad to see the back of this, this has been pretty much used since August for everything but it’s intended purpose. This didn’t clean my hair or foam up very well at all – so it got used up as a body wash instead

Schwarzkopf Got2B Guardian Angel Heat Protector

A inexpensive heat protector with little else to say other than it has a nice cottony/linen type smell – one I’d usually associate with candles rather than beauty products, but never the less a good product.

Repurchase? Maybe – I have two others in my drawer so no need for now.

Garnier Ultimate Blends Marvellous Transformer Shampoo

This has been sat on the side of my bath since we moved in (I’ve only used the bath about 4 times since moving in) that I just got fed up of looking at it and it got moved to my shower. It was fine – did the job and left my hair feeling clean (better than Soap and Glory in that respect!) but it didn’t do anything that made me love it more than that.

Repurchase? Maybe

Neal & Wolf Glow Shine Spray (review)

Picked up in my Love Me Beauty box in September, I tried out pretty much all of the styling line from Neal and Wolf and really enjoyed this shine spray in particular for making my ombre blonde locks look shiny, but I more fell in love with shine sprays after not having one for about a year, rather than the specific product. I did enjoy using this, but it’s not the cheapest, or the easiest product to get hold of – so I can’t see me repurchasing.

Repurchase? Probably not

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle

I received this in January’s Birchbox and was pretty much bombarded with how great this product was. This just didn’t do it for me – it didn’t detangle my hair at all especially when compared to miracle product ‘genius lotion’ from lee stafford.

FACE SKINCARE

Garnier Pure Active Micellar Water

Some form of Garnier Micellar water is in pretty much in every other empties. I’d never seen the PureActive version before, claiming to be better for balancing oily skin I picked it up straight away – personally I didn’t see a difference between the normal version and this. It did the same fantastic job of removing makeup so I can’t really complain.

Repurchase? Already have another on the go – but always yes.

Balance Me Restore and Replenish Cream Cleanser (review)

Reviewed at the start of january, I liked this product for leaving my skin feel soft, however it didn’t do a great job of getting rid of makeup at all – so because of that it failed to impress me. I want my cleanser to most importantly get rid of my makeup – then nourish and moisturise.

Repurchase? No

Absolution L’Eau Soir et Main

Another product from January’s Birchbox, I knew from the get go I probably wasn’t going to love this. Essentially it’s a Micellar water, a very expensive £29 Micellar water, whilst it smelt nice – that was the only thing I could really differentiate between that and Garnier – and the tiny bottle meant I only got about a weeks worth of use once a day so I couldn’t be convinced that this £29 product was any better than my favourite £3 product.

Makeup & Nails

Rimmel Match Perfection Sample

I do already have a full size of this, but thought it would be handy to take on a night away instead of taking a full size. Like this foundation – natural looking with a light to medium coverage.

Repurchase? Already have a full size

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer (review)

I probably would never have got around to trying this out had I of not been sent a selection of items from Maybelline, but this became my go to for making under my eyes look flawless quickly. I’m desperately trying to finish up a few other concealers in my drawer before opening my next one, but I love this!

Repurchase? Already Have

Sensationail Gel Base & Topcoat

This came with my Gel Kit, and I was left thoroughly unimpressed with Gel Manicures as a result – thinking they just weren’t for me and I’d wasted £70. But it was this, far too runny it just pooled at the sides of the nails and left a mani that lasted no longer – if not less than a normal manicure. I tried and tried with this to the point that it is actually empty, but it’s definitely rubbish.

Repurchase? No

Sally Hansen Instant Gel Topcoat

This was much better than sensationail, but since trying the blue sky one I won’t be repurchasing this as I find it’s thicker (better  for covering glitters) and makes the mani last a bit longer

Repurchase? No

Have you tried any of these? Let me know if you agreed or disagreed with me!

I saw a new display for that Garnier micallar water here and it shows another version that’s got a light blue cap – it’s for sensitive skin and is oil-free. I’m curious about that one.
So glad you love the Maybelline concealer – that stuff is better than high-end concealers!

I’ve not seen the sensitive one here, but I haven’t been keeping an eye out for it either! I do, although I did buy the new MUFE HD concealer in NY – and I think that might beat it, coverage of that is insane – and so lightweight!

I found the sensationail gel things rubbish too. I thought it was because my light is from another brand but good to know it isn’t that. They were just so thin that they stayed wet even when I set them with the light until the top coat from RCM covered it. I haven’t tried most of the others, I’ve recently found the garnier micellar water, the normal one, and love it. I haven’t seen that version near me but I might have to look out for it. I use soap and glory shampoo all the time as it works really well for my hair.

Most people seem to get on with S&G maybe I just got a bottle from a Bad batch! everything from Sensationail is a little bit rubbish I think – haven’t been a fan of any of the polishes, I now have 4, the topcoats – and even the lamp from the kit is a little awkward, it’s a bit too small!

Maybelline Instant Rewind Age Concealer is my holy grail for drug store concealers!

Is the Garnier Micellar Water comparable to the Bioderma one? I have tried the Bioderma one and it’s pretty amazing…

    • February 24, 2016 / 4:17 pm

I’ve tried bioderma several times – I had one Before you could get Micellar waters just about everywhere and have had 2 or 3 samples since, I wouldn’t go back to it personally, it’s quadruple the price here and it’s only a tiny bit better. I’m not even sure if it is better or whether it’s my brain telling me it must be because it’s a more expensive!
